Nikon 25594B overview

  • 1Description

The Nikon Coolpix S600 Digital Camera packs high performance and advanced functions into an ultra-compact body. The S600 boasts 10 effective megapixels of sharp resolution, and a 4x Wide Angle Zoom-NIKKOR lens with an equivalent focal length of 28 - 112mm (in 35mm terms). Plus the lens incorporates Nikon's acclaimed Optical Vibration Reduction (VR) Image Stabilization, along with a Sensitivity equivalent to ISO 3200 to ensure that your photos will always look great - regardless of lighting conditions or subject movement. Furthermore the S600 is a high performance camera, boasting extraordinary speed with a start up time of just 0.7 seconds. Shutter response and autofocus speeds are also quick and responsive, ensuring that the camera is always ready to go. And all of these features are mediated by Nikon's innovative EXPEED image processing system which provides enhanced noise reduction and an improved signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio.

The Nikon S600 incorporates Nikon's user-friendly imaging innovations known as Nikon In-Camera Innovations. These include In-Camera Red-Eye Fix which automatically detects and corrects red eye, a common condition that occurs in flash photography, D-Lighting which compensates for excessive backlight or insufficient flash in images, and Face Priority AF which automatically finds and focuses on up to 12 people's faces within one frame, ensuring clear, crisp portraits. The S600 also includes Nikon's Coolpix Software Suite for organizing, editing and sharing your photos.

For capturing action shots or fast moving kids, the S600 adds an Active Child Mode to the camera's scene modes. This feature allows the user to select and frame his or her subject prior to shooting. If the subject moves, the camera will track and focus on the moving subject as you shoot for faster, more reassuring operation and sharper results. Additionally, the S600 features a Pastel Mode, which produces images with a beautiful watercolor effect.

The Coolpix S600 has a bright, high resolution 2.7-inch LCD monitor with an anti-reflective coating and a wide viewing angle, thereby easing the composition and viewing of photos even in direct sunlight. The quality-crafted aluminum body has a streamlined profile and a slim, ergonomic design that style-conscious photographers will love. The S600 is compatible with SDHC cards and utilizes the compact EN-EL10 rechargeable Li-ion battery so you'll have plenty of power for a day of picture taking.

10.0 Megapixel Resolution
With 10.0 million pixels of image information, the Nikon Coolpix S600 can produce stunning, photo quality prints up to poster sizes without any loss of image quality. The camera also records images in the 16:9 wide format aspect ratio so your images are well proportioned to be viewed on an HD Video Display
4x Wide-angle Zoom-NIKKOR Lens
The versatile, high-quality 4x wide-angle Zoom-NIKKOR lens has an equivalent focal length in 35mm terms of 28 - 112mm and is ideal for everything from expansive landscape shots, to real estate photos, to intimate portraits. The high quality NIKKOR optics also allows macro shooting from as close as 1.2" (3cm) to your subject.
Optical VR (Vibration Reduction) Image Stabilization
The lens of the Coolpix S600 incorporates Nikon's optical lens shift VR (Vibration Reduction) system, which compensates for camera movements to produce sharper, steadier images. And because the VR system remains active whenever the camera is on, images also appear more stable on the LCD monitor, making it much easier to judge the right moment to take the shot.
Slim, Stylish, All-Metal Design
With a slim, sophisticated design this ultra-compact digital camera easily slips right into your shirt pocket or purse, and its good looks are complemented by incredible durability due to the all-metal casing.
Movie and Voice Recording
Shoot broadcast quality video clips in AVI Motion JPEG format with VGA resolution at 30 frames per second at a length that is only limited by the available space on the internal memory or your SD memory card.
Light Sensitivity up to ISO 3200
High light sensitivity up to ISO 3200 allows you to tackle scenes and situations that many compact cameras cannot, with the power to capture fast-moving objects with outstanding clarity and gives you great exposures in lower light.
15 Scene Modes
The Coolpix S600 incorporates 15 scene modes that cover some of the more common difficult shooting situations to maximize the image quality. The scene modes automatically adjust focus, exposure, white balance and other settings to make getting a good exposure easy. There are also several color options including the unique Pastel Mode which creates a soft, impressionistic image when enabled.
Active Child Mode
The Active Child mode automatically tracks and focuses on the subject when the OK button is pressed, for carefree shooting with beautiful results. In Active Child mode, you simply frame and select your subject before shooting. The camera then tracks and focuses on that moving subject as you shoot for faster, more reassuring operation with clearer results.
Nikon In-Camera Innovations
The Coolpix S600 features a selection of three innovative functions that provide the ability to actually improve the quality of images within the camera - these include Face-priority AF, In-Camera Red-Eye Fix and D-Lighting.

  • In-Camera Red-Eye Fix
This Feature automatically fixes most instances of red-eye - right in the camera. Red-eye is commonly caused by the use of a built-in flash on a compact camera.
  • Improved Face-Priority AF
The Nikon Face-Priority AF system automatically detects and achieves sharp focus on people's faces wherever they are in the frame for crisp, sharp portraits - and now it focuses on faces faster than ever. The feature can find and focus on up to 12 faces to ensure superb group portraits.
  • Nikon D-Lighting
The Nikon D-Lighting feature can rescue underexposed images or shots taken with too much backlight by automatically creating a copy of the image, then brightening the dark areas in the picture, while the well-exposed areas are left completely untouched.
Built-in and Expandable Memory
The camera includes 45MB of built-in memory so you can begin taking shots immediately without having to purchase a memory card, and the memory capacity can be expanded dramatically with Secure digital (SD) or Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) memory cards.
Fast Start-up
The Coolpix S600 has been optimized for a fast start-up time of within 0.7 seconds and fast AF which frees you to capture special moments as you experience them.
Bright 2.7-inch LCD Display
The Coolpix S600 is equipped with a bright 2.7" LCD that is great for viewing images anywhere, anytime; plus with an anti-reflection coating and an impressive 170 degree wide viewing angle, it is easy to see the screen from any angle, even under bright lighting conditions.
Auto Image Rotation
The Auto Image Rotation feature detects pictures that have been taken with the camera held vertically and automatically rotates the image for in-camera LCD playback.
Print Directly or Show Pictures on a TV
You can send images directly to print, without the need of a PC, when using PictBridge and USB Direct Print compatible printers, or connect directly to your TV for family slide shows and presentations.

Nikon 25594B reviews

Coolpix S600 Digital Camera (Slate Black) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 20.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Camera - Recommended to anyone I bought this as an upgrade to my old Coolpix camera from over 4 years ago. I have a Nikon D70 and I stayed with Nikon for my point & shoot. I found the menus easy to navigate without looking at the manual only because it was almost the same set-up as my old Coolpix point & shoot. The pictures from this camera come out crisp and clean. Some of my recent best shots have been taken with this camera. This is great for everyday use or if you are just getting started with photography and dont want to spend over $1,000.00 for a nice camera.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from An excellent compact camera! I bought this camera for my wife, and she love it because is compact, has a big and bright display, enough zoom (4x) and the lens at 28mm (35mm eqv.) is very good for family portraits and shooting wide. The video capability is very good too. I have two cons, one is the lag time, I do not know if it is because I am used to shot with SLRs, but sometimes you can miss a particular gesture of your kid. The second one, is that the camera structure is good but not the strongest. Be careful with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it - great point and shoot digital Bought for a trip to Europe - easy to use, love the simplicity of the make & fun directions for each function on screen - takes clear beautiful shots - great zoom but the lens extends everytime you turn it on, not REALLY a big deal- good color and good at night/ no light. Only thing - where is the red eye reduction - guess I have to read the manual and I'm used to Sony's where I charge the whole camera on the base for the battery - this one you have to remove the battery and charge it separately - i highly recommend picking up a second battery since its so cheap - i lost mine half way through my vacation but now I know better!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice Camera I shoot Nikon DSLRs for professional shots, and I carry this around for family and convenience. I am very happy with the camera's size, battery life, and general picture quality. Downsides: 1. The menus are awkward. I don't know who could use all of the scene settings. 2. The video recording is only for emergencies. I shot my daughter's piano recital - 4 minutes - and wound up with a momento but something barely worth posting to youtube. 3. No RAW/NEF setting. Maybe just too much to ask from an inexpensive P&S, but it would have been really nice.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from What a fun camera! I bought this to shoot my daughters wedding. I was amazed at how versatile it is. After many, many years of 35mm and 120, I bought an Olympus digital P&S. It was OK but not great. This camera was a real joy. They have made wonderful advances in the onboard computer. Not just in the things it will do for you but in the options you have in overriding the preset definitions. I am a little disappointed that the battery doesn't last longer w/o recharging. And the size is a pro and a con. It's is so small and light that you can pretty much have it with you all the time. On the other hand, it is so small and light that I have to keep double checking that I haven't lost it and the controls are a bit on the small side.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Little Camera I use the camera for indoor and out door family photos and scenere. I also use it at work maybe once a month for up cloose shots of hardware. The video is just a novelty for me. Images are very clear, face detection and image stabilization work very well. 99% of the shotsw are great in normal lighting. Like all cameras you need to play with the settings in low light. Good form and feel especially with the Slate Black. Highly recommended. One feature I'd like to have is bluetooth or other wireless capability to eliminate downloading gear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would buy this product again and again I use this camera to take pictures of sports and also big social gatherings. It is terrific and takes great distance and close up shots. The vibration isolation works fantastic!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good but not great. Balancing size features and cost is not an easy task. Considering the size of the camera, the images are reasonably good. Despite the large 10 mega pixels the images tend to be soft and noisy. I had expected more from Nikon. The strength of this camera is it higher accuracy of skin tones and the 4x wide angle 28 equivalent lens. The small size is a plus but would sacrifice for better image quality and a 5x wide angle lens. My two previous sony cameras created sharper overall images, but they lacked depth in skin tones which very often appeared dithered. The low light focusing is good, much better than the nikon P80 that i returned for poor focusing issues in room light and dusk conditions. Face detection gets lost occasionally in room light conditions. Shutter lag seems about average and flash time is acceptable for this type of camera. Navigating the menu is about average. Not entirely intuitive at first. The real nuisance with this camera is quickly returning to shooting while in an adjustment or viewing mode. Depressing the shutter will not return you to shooting mode when in the middle of viewing stored images or making changes to settings. One needs to back navigate the menu a little. I guess the intent was to insure settings were executed correctly. However, when you have kids around or the action is happening and need to take a shot quick and you haven't mastered the menu sequence you will likely miss your shot. A bad thing for infrequent users who are not proficient with navigating the controls. The rotary selector is a neat feature which allows you to scroll through pix and menus by rotating the dial and works well. For me however the small size of the dial or perhaps the small size of the center okay button, frequently cause me to miss the okay button, hitting the up or down arrows if i am not extremely careful. Raising or enlarging the okay button would eliminate that problem. A standard mini usb would have saved on yet another chord requirement.
