The 1TB MiniStation Thunderbolt/USB 3.0 Portable Drive with Cables by Buffalo Technology gives you the three S's that all data managers and curators need - storage, style, and speed. This 1TB drive now features both USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt connectors for the ultimate in fast transfers - if you're a PC users engaging the USB 3.0 port, you'll see transfers at 12x the speed of USB 2.0, roughly 5Gbps. If you're a Mac user, using the Thunderbolt port, you'll see twice that - transfer speed approaching 10Gbps. Yikes.

Housed in a sleek aluminum body, this portable speed demon can easily be placed in a bag or carrying case and moved from workspace to workspace. There's no additional power supply to carry because the unit is bus-powered - it runs from power supplied to the connector from the host computer.

Although the MiniStation drives are formatted out of the box as HSF+ for Mac users, a simple reformat makes the drives PC accessible in either FAT32 or NTFS partitions. It's also Time Machine compatible, so you can get a complete Mac data backup immediately. You can also daisy-chain up to six Thunderbolt devices together, so using the MiniStation as one of the drop points in a server chain is possible (please note that because there is only one Thunderbolt port on this unit, it must be placed at the end of the chain).

You can even forget about the added expense and time of tracking down cables - this unit comes with both a USB 3.0 cable and a Thunderbolt cable, which separately can cost over $60. You can start transferring, storing, and securing data as soon as you open the box.

Unparalleled Speed
MiniStation Thunderbolt features the revolutionary Thunderbolt technology, raising the bar on how you transfer, store and transport data. Delivering speeds up to an amazing 10 Gbps, it is the fastest interface available, 2X faster than USB 3.0, ideal for creative professionals and multimedia enthusiasts. Additionally, you can daisy-chain up to six Thunderbolt devices to maximize use of a single port.
USB Compatibility
Coupled with the lightning-fast Thunderbolt technology is a USB 3.0 port for universal connectivity. Simply plug it into any available USB port on your computer and instantly add capacity or store files to take on the road. Plug and play usability means there are no drivers to install and MiniStation Thunderbolt is pre-formatted for Mac computers but can easily be reformatted for use with PCs.
Time Machine Backup
MiniStation Thunderbolt is pre-formatted for use with Mac and is compatible with Time Machine for complete data backup. Schedule backups and automatically protect your important files with plug and play connectivity.

1TB MiniStation Thunderbolt/USB 3.1 Gen 1 Portable Drive with Cables is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 74.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast, small, and high capacity storage. I have been waiting for a drive like this for a long time. The 1 TB MiniStation Thunderbolt drive is an ideal portable drive for editing video on the road. With the 10Gbps Thunderbolt interface, this drive has the throughput to handle HD Video editing tasks seamlessly. I've used other drives that interface via a Thunderbolt docking station for a few years. This drive does away with the docking station and connects directly via the included Thunderbolt cable. The drive comes pre-formatted as a Mac Extended Journaled drive so it was recognized immediately by my i7 Macbook Air. The silver and white housing matches the Mac perfectly. I was so impressed I bought 2.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent performance thus far Great product, I bought two on the initial purchase and they both are working well. I like that this product has two outputs - Thunderbolt (great speed) and the USB 3 which is backward compatible with USB 2 devices. I use these on two different MacBook Pros that I have. One is an older 17 version (no Thunderbolt) and the other is a new 15 Retinal display version. It works very well on both and I am able to take my Aperture libraries with me as I travel. If I had any wish that could turn 4 stars into 5 stars it would be for this product to be available as an SSD drive with at least 960 MB to 1 TB capacity (larger without a larger footprint would be even better)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super user-friendly I'm using this with Time Machine on a Mac desktop (with OS 10.7 Lion) for backups. Of course I can't yet comment on the drive's long-term performance, but setup was a snap. I plugged in the Thunderbolt cable, turned on Time Machine, and I was done. The Buffalo drive fits perfectly on the base of the iMac display. It even looks as if it had been designed to go along with the Mac. Copying about 225 GB of data from the Mac to the Buffalo drive using Thunderbolt took about an hour, I think. The external drive is a bit warm to the touch, but that mild drawback is the only negative I can think of.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far So Good! This is my first Buffalo Thunderbolt. It is pre-formatted to Mac, and so far I am very impressed by the speed of copying my photo files to the unit. I purchased the unit for archiving my photos, I've taken over 600GB of photo files in the past 12 months, so I need a place to archive. Redundancy is important with digital files, and I intent to make this a part of that system. As this is my first Buffalo product, I can say that already I find it operates more smoothly than the Seagate product I originally had. My immediate rating is 4 Stars. I'm holding back from a 5 Star rating because I've only owned the product a couple weeks, and time will tell if it is reliable for long term storage.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Little Drive I'm using this as an editing stopgap for a client. They're keeping a backup of all the files, but they're spread over a lot of external drives so I bought this to accumulate all the footage while I edit it. The project revolves around 500 short form videos, 1000 GIFs and 1000 Stills, so you can see how it eats up space very quickly. Being able to edit directly off of the Buffalo drive saves a lot of internal hard drive space as well and thanks to the Thunderbolt connection there's minimal performance lost. Last and best of all is that it's bus powered and super compact. LOVE it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Second to none! Literally! Only bus powered external thunderbolt HD at time of buying. I own a couple of USB WD external HD and very happy with them. Buffalo is slightly larger for the same capacity, remaining still in the portable side. I had no other choice, but I must say I'm extremely happy with this purchase. I use mainly as in the field HD for photography and working with it is a breeze. It is blazingly fast, exactly as expected. Style wasn't a requirement but it is indeed a bonus. I'm only waiting for a 2Tb version to get another unit. This is highly recommendable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great workhorse for FCP X I bought a small pile of these to issue my film students. They use FCP X which is really built around using fast, portable, thunderbolt drives. These have been through one semester and have survived well enough. Putting the fear of God into students about replacement costs helps in this matter, but still. Accidents happen as does jostling. And these are a significant upgrade to the old G-Drive Firewire 800 drives I have, which are now relegated to backup duty. I like that they are self-powered and come with the cable, which is a total racket otherwise. The case also is a little bit matte finish, which will take writing from a Sharpie to identify the unit with semipermanent inventory info. Also comes in a small enough cardboard box without excess packaging that makes it easy to give to students. My only suggestion for improvement would be to have a pass-through port. For me, this would mean plugging into the back of my 8TB WD powerbook and chaining a series of drives to copy stock footage onto a series of drives all at once. But alas, few products are perfect. They DO get hot if you run a lot of data through them. But I think that is pretty much all thunderbolt drives, esp small ones.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from awesome drive Using this as a Time Machine backup for new iMac. Incredibly fast during backups. Truly impressive performance. Nice design, fit & finish. Great status LED location and intensity. Very well made- from Japan. This thing would be perfect if it had Thunderbolt loop thru and a 3TB variant.
