Book: David Busch's Sony Alpha NEX-7 Guide to Digital Photography (1st Edition) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Vital Reading for NEX-7 Photographers To a guy who has used analog settings for 46 years and a manual SLR so long that he pretty much can guess how the pictures will turn out, DAVID BUSCH'S ALPHA NEX-7 GUIDE TO DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY (1st Edition) is a wondrous volume. The NEX-7 is not like any DSLR that I have picked up and played with. You can do so much simply by pushing a few buttons, but you won't find much that reminds you of an old-time (as in 1990s) film SLR. That said, if you know how to use the camera, you CAN make every setting that you could on a film SLR, plus, of course, the new, good things, like allowing for varying kinds of white balance (something that used to drive me wild with color film). Now, I am not at all intuitive with digital devices. Maybe some day I will be, but until that great day arrives, I certainly appreciate Mr. Busch's guide. It tells and shows me how to get the NEX-7 to do what I want. The book progresses in a way I find both logical and useful. Anyone who has begun to use a new computer will probably appreciate its setup. The first chapter explains how to get started. I was quite at home with its way of doing things. Like quick start manuals to computers, the chapter mentions the basic areas on the camera but doesn't go into lots of detail. It assumes you have already found some of the things and have taken at least a few test shots -- all easy to do. Basically it helps you to feel at ease with the camera. The second chapter Sony Alpha NEX-7 Roadmap is very important, yet extremely easy to understand and to learn. It offers great color photos of the camera from several angles with key details labelled, so that you know exactly where vital controls and things like microphones and lens releases are. If some control needs fuller explanation, just for the serious techie or for anyone's later reading, the chapter also contains cross references to later in-depth sections that appear in subsequent chapters. I really appreciate both the up-front information that will help me to use the camera well right now and the chance to choose when to go into depth concerning the lure and lore of NEX-dom. (Frankly, for instance, lenses interest me tons more than flash, even attachable flash. Guess which in-depth chapters might be read first.)Chapter 3 is Setting up Your Sony Alpha NEX-7. I have a confession to make. When I got the book, I read this chapter first, just to see whether I'd done the job correctly. Actually, as you probably know, the NEX-7 helps you to set up the date and so forth, stuff that we who like to keep pictures find important. There are topics in Chapter 3 that I had not contemplated or had ignored, however, such as White Balance, Metering Mode, all sorts of things related to audio, playback on television, and movies. I also found information on something that I had understood mirrorless cameras lack, and that is a section on Cleaning Mode. Apparently the Sony Alpha NEX-7 has an AUTOMATIC SENSOR CLEANING SYSTEM that reduces or eliminates the need to clean your camera's sensor manually using brushes, swabs, or bulb blowers (You'll find instructions on how to do that in Chapter 11). Obviously I have quoted Mr. Busch, p. 121, and have included one of his references to in-depth material to show how the book allows you to go farther at a time of your own choosing.Chapter 4 deals with exposure, chapter 5 with mastering autofocus, chapter 6 moves into advanced shooting, chapter 7 focuses on movie making, chapter 8 is Working with Lenses, Chapter 9 has to do with lighting, Chapter 10 is Downloading and Editing your Images, and Chapter 11 is Troubleshooting and Prevention. I have decided to survey / summarize the book because I suspect many people do not invest in such resources when a camera like the NEX-7 is so easy to pick up and use. Its accessibility, at least for some, may be deceptive, in that there are levels of potential you might never reach, unless you invest the time in reading David Busch's SONY ALPHA NEX-7 GUIDE TO DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY. The book is more than a manual to the camera. It grafts the technology of the camera to the ever-growing art of photography.
