Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 Overview

  • 1Description

The AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8 Lens for Canon EF by Tokina is an ultra-wide angle autofocus zoom lens with a fast constant f/2.8 maximum aperture. The AT-X 116 PRO DX-II lens is designed for digital cameras with APS-C-size CMOS or CCD sensors. Its angle of view ranges from 104-84° and it can focus as close as 11.8". Nine diaphragm blades help to produce soft out-of-focus backgrounds while two Super-Low Dispersion glass elements and two aspheric elements help to achieve excellent contrast, sharpness and minimal chromatic aberration. As an update to their AT-X 116 PRO DX, Tokina has improved the multi-layer coatings to minimize light reflection and improve optical performance. The PRO DX-II has an internal focusing motor which is ideal if shooting video with your digital camera.

Tokina's One-Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism allows the photographer to switch between autofocus and manual focus with a simple push of the focus ring. Snapping it forward into autofocus and back into manual focus is all that needs be done, there's no need to adjust the AF/MF switch on the camera body.

A constant f/2.8 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light situations and also aids in creating a shallow depth of field.
An internal focusing motor allows for smoother focus transitions and is ideal for shooting video with your digital camera.
Two Super-Low Dispersion glass elements and two aspheric elements, as well as improved multi-coating, achieve excellent sharpness and contrast and reduce aberrations.
The One-Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism offers a simple switch from manual focus to autofocus and back again. The focus ring snaps forward for AF and back for MF. It's operable with one hand and eliminates the need to switch from AF to MF on the camera body.

    Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 Reviews

    AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8 Lens for Canon EF is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 197.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far so good I bought this for my Canon T2i. It works great, The auto-focus is fast but once a while it can't focus correctly, not sure why but if I can find ways to work around it, I am sure others can as well. I was debating whether to get Tokina 11-16mm F/2.8 or Canon's 10-22mm F/3.5-4.5. I really wish to get the 10mm feature but ultimately decide that F/2.8 works better for me at night. Other review pointed out the soft corner effect but that doesn't bother me too much. Overall, I like it, but it's still not perfect. This one comes with lens hood...and I found it unnecessary, so I probably paid a few more bucks for something that I don't need.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It gets the job done I've been using this first generation of lens for a few years now and it gets the job done. It's taken a lot of abuse and the infinite focus is a little tricky now... but it's still getting great shots. If you film on a crop sensor camera this IS the lens to have. Maybe it's me but I recently used Canon's 16-35mm L on a full frame and the distortion was CRAZY!!!! I had the Tokina 11-16mm on my crop sensor (making it 16mm at its widest) and the distortion was way better. It's a decent lens and a decent price. A friend of mine was using this recently on his C100 with great results... all in all it is a great investment

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent for Astrophotography I bought this lens primarily for use in wide field astrophotography. The image is very good, even wide open. There is some vignetting but not too much (and easily correctable). Chromatic aberration is slight and not a major issue. I shot several nights from a mountain in Chile and from dark sites around Tucson. This lens is becoming one of my workhorses. I have also found it to be very good in tight spaces such as observatory domes where you need a very wide field and can't get very far away from your subject. You are going to have a hard time beating the value of this lens if you are interested in this type of photography. It can be tough to attach in the dark...practice in the daytime first!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesomeness I live n Alaska and have rented this lens a few times from my local camera store. I finely broke down and bought 2!!!! I use them for photographing the northern lights. They are the only lens I have found that has the super wide angle I need with the fast 2.8. If you are looking for a sweet fast wide angle lens I would most defiantly recommend this lens. And I have to my fellow aurora photographer friends.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing lens, totally worth the buy I'm a 'beginner' by definition, and had been looking for cameras and lenses for weeks trying to decide on the best one. Was going back and forth between this and the Nikon D7100 and eventually decided on this one. I looked at all the possible photo reviews and videos online, after going crazy i realized i couldn't go wrong with this. I'm a Realtor, and plan on using this for listing photos and commercial/residential photography as well as the occasional modeling/portraits. Bought this with the Canon 70D, and this was the perfect addition to the package. Little pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for. Totally worth the buy. Ease of use is seamless for a beginner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens! (Tokina 11-16mm 2.8f) I purchased this for night time photography. I photograph the Northern Lights, stars and the Milky Way and it really has exceeded my expectations. I've also used it for landscape day time photos and have nothing negative to say about this lens. The lens is whisper quiet when it automatically focuses. The infinity mark on the lens is super helpful and I haven't had a blurry night time photo since this purchase!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must for Crop-Sensor Video Bought this for video production using a 70D and I have to say that this lens has become indispensable. Distortion at 11mm is minimal and non-existent at 16mm. This lens is a huge step up from any 18mm-based zoom kit lens. The constant f/2.8 aperture helps greatly in low light. I compared the sharpness to L lenses and it is on par. Buy this for video and you will not regret it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing! I have been using this lens for about 2 weeks now and all I can say is WOW! The construction is very sturdy and I can say that it feels like the quality of an L lens (without the waterproof of course). The focusing is average, way better than kit lenses but not as fast as L series. I was a little on the fence when it came to how you switch from AF to MF but after actually using it, it has grown on me. This is meant for crop sensor cameras and there is absolutely no vignetting at 11 or 16. The only con I can find with this lens is the slight hint of softness in the corners at 2.8 but if you go up to 4 or 5.6, it disappears completely. All in all, this lens is incredible. Buy it while you can.
