FUJIFILM XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS Overview

Mixing versatility, speed, and a sleek design, the XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS from FUJIFILM is a flexible 27-84mm-equivalent standard zoom for X-mount mirrorless cameras. Its bright f/2.8-4 maximum aperture range suits working in difficult lighting conditions and also helps to keep the overall and size and weight of the lens down. A Super EBC coating also improves contrast and color neutrality by reducing flare and ghosting when working in strong lighting conditions. Additionally, benefitting use in a variety of situations, a linear motor delivers quick and quiet autofocus performance and a five stop-effective image stabilization system minimizes the appearance of camera shake.

Standard zoom is designed for APS-C-format Fujifilm X-mount mirrorless cameras and offers a 27-84mm equivalent focal length range.
One extra-low dispersion element is used to greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce high clarity and color fidelity throughout the zoom range.
Three aspherical elements control distortion and spherical aberrations, which helps to improve sharpness and realize more accurate rendering.
Super EBC coating has been applied to individual elements to reduce lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
A linear motor autofocus system, coupled with an internal focusing design, delivers smooth, near-silent performance that is especially beneficial to video applications and when working in noise-sensitive areas.
Complemented by an enhanced gyro sensor and unique series of algorithms, the optical stabilization system minimizes the appearance of camera shake by up to four stops to enable sharper imaging when working with longer focal lengths or slower shutter speeds.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out-of-focus quality to benefit the use of selective focus and shallow depth of field techniques.

FUJIFILM XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS Reviews

Pretty good but like another person said QC Issues

I've had two of these. The first one I bought worked great for a few months but then for some reason it got locked at it's widest aperture. I could turn the control wheel on my cameras (XT-1 and XT-2) and the aperture would not change beyond the widest unless I zoomed in because it has the variable aperture. You could get to f 5.6 but only if you zoomed in so it wasn't as if the lens couldn't mechanically zoom in. It seemed to be more of an electronic issue which is what my biggest worry has been with all mirrorless systems moving to have control funtions of a lens done by wire. I bought a second one though, and it was flawless. It's VERY sharp for a kit lens. I mean it's not going to be razor sharp but you CAN do professional work with this lens. You don't need the widest apertures and the sharpest of the sharpest glass to do pro work in all situations. If you think that's what you need then you still have a lot of learning to do as photographer. The auto focus is not the fastest but it also isn't the slowest. It works no less than it should at this price range which is relatively fast but very accurate. I only ever have problems focusing in the lowest of light (like a single candle light) but even then it's not that bad and I don't miss too many shots. I've used this lens for portraits and BTS stills on film sets and it has performed admirably and reliably. The construction is solid. The OIS is not the best that is available but it deffo helps and doesn't take away from the lens. It has good contrast and handles flaring pretty well for it's cost. It is also very quiet Which helped immensely when shooting BTS stills. It has actually become one of my favorite lenses of all time that I've used simply because of it's price to performance ratio. I can easily recommend this lens as long as you don't get a bad copy.

This is the Big Bang for the Buck go-to lens

I bought this lens to go with the Fuji X-Pro2 that I was delightfully surprised to find in the Used department. Should I have selected the 16-55mm instead? A little faster with a wider f-stop to start. But the 18-55mm is more compact, and on the X-Pro2, less weight and less mass is nice. And then there is the price difference between the two lenses. At any rate, the extreme high quality of the images shot with this lens convinced me to buy a few more Fuji lenses such as the 14mm and the 23mm F2 primes. I love those lenses a lot, too. But most of the time, this 18-55mm is my go-to lens. Well, one quibble, perhaps. I wish Fuji had marked the f-stops on the aperature ring like the other lenses. That said, I get all that information in the EVF and LED screen. Alas, I remain hooked on this lens with the X-Pro2. I mean, what's not to love?

I returned the first one I bought, it was soft from about one third and out to the edges at pretty much every aperture and focal length. The second one is outstanding! Sharp even at 18 mm wide open, impressive. Bear in mind that any manufacturer can have issues, I've had Leica lenses that weren't up to par. This is an amazingly versatile lens, I love it

Bought this one as a kit years ago with my first Fuji body. Sold it for the 16-55 'brick' as the lack of 16mm was killing me as I love that 16mm perspective. But, the brick is heavy and this together with the 10-24 makes for a much more manageable travel kit. Or an even lighter travel kit if paired with the 14 or 16 f2.8 primes. Rebought it for that purpose as the build and optical quality are outstanding. Its only shortcoming is lack of weather sealing.

Great lens!

A better than average kit lens

Given it is not a cheap lens, however, I do love the image and build quality of this lens, If you need a zoom in the 24mm to 75mm (equivalent) this one does a very good job. For its image quality, I would highly recommend this lens at this price point, at least until Tamron, Viltrox, or (ideally) Sigma start offering competitively priced zoom lenses for fuji.

This is an outstanding all-around lens. I have the 14mm and the 23mm as well. Excellent lenses all. But this 18-55mm is a great value as well.

Does anyone know which way the focus works on the XF lenses? Does it pull closer to the right like canon lenses or is it the opposite like Nikon, and some Sony lenses?
Asked by: Patrick
You rotate the lens' focusing ring to the left to reduce the focus distance, and rotate the focusing ring to the right to increase the focus distance out to infinity. However, you may go into the menu and go to BUTTON/DIAL SETTING > FOCUS RING to reverse the direction of rotation of the focus ring.
