Rokinon 35mm T1.5 Cine Overview

  • 1Description

The Canon EF mount Rokinon 35mm T1.5 Cine AS UMC Lens was developed primarily for film and video applications. The cine version of Rokinon's 35mm lens features industry-standard gearing for the focus and aperture ring, and the aperture ring has been de-clicked for smooth iris pulls. The aperture and focus scales have also been relocated to the side of the lens, where it is easier for focus pullers to read them.

This lens is compatible with full-frame sensors and can also be used on APS-C-sized sensors, where the 35mm-equivalent focal length will be 56mm. The optical construction incorporates two high refractive index elements and one aspherical element to reduce chromatic aberrations and distortion to produce sharper imagery. Additionally, a UMC coating has been applied to lens elements to minimize lens flare and ghosting for more contrast-rich images.

Wide-angle prime lens is well-suited to use in a broad variety of shooting situations.
Fast T1.5 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and provides greater control over focus placement for shallow depth of field applications.
Two high refractive index elements and one aspherical element reduce chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater sharpness and clarity.
UMC coating improves light transmission and suppresses lens flare and ghosting for more contrast-rich, color-neutral images.
Geared aperture and focus rings are compatible with standard follow focuses for greater control over adjustment.
De-clicked aperture ring facilitates smooth, quiet exposure adjustments during recording.

    Rokinon 35mm T1.5 Cine Reviews

35mm T1.5 Cine AS UMC Lens for Canon EF Mount is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 123.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value and sharp I've come from fixed lens (zoom) Sony pro video equipment via Canon MK111 with 24-105 L series lens. And now to the Canon EOS C100. This is a great lens esp. for the money. Now I can separate my subject from the background with ridiculous ease and get great results - in almost any light conditions. I love the manual operation - makes you think before you shoot (never a bad thing). I'm getting great results and a lens that seems as sharp as the L Series (so far). If you've ever wondered about Cine lenses - cut your teeth on this one - you sure won't regret it. Remember on some camera (like the C100) crop factor (1.5) makes this a 50mm lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing picture quality You might think this lens as just a good budget lens because you might have read excellent reviews online about these Rokinon Cine Lenses. But I can say these lenses are more than just that. I have previously own Canon L and Zeiss T* lenses and having tested them all I can clearly say these lenses really stand up very well against these two competitors I have mentioned. Of course build quality is not as good as those ones, but for a fraction of the price you are obtaining an excellent picture quality. Since these cine lenses do not have electronics at all, what you are paying for is the glass. They're still missing the 50mm cine lens, they shall release it soon. From my experience, these Rokinon Cine lenses are superb.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Like a Dream I was skeptical about these lenses at first. Read reviews about how some shipped and looked soft, focus gear was loose, minor things that once added up - made the lens seem cheap. Once I got my hands on a 35mm rental, that all changed. It was noticeably sharper than my 50mm 1.4 Sigma, heavy duty build, de-clicked aperture is great. I can't believe I haven't pulled the trigger and purchased them sooner! Will be getting more soon! If you are on the fence about these lenses, like I was, let this review be the angel on your shoulder, re-assuring you that it'll be alright!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good value For the money, it really is good. Contrast is good, sharpness is excellent especially at around T2.8. That is what maters most and what I like most about this lens. The focus ring feels a little plasticky, and it could rotate closer to a full 360 degrees instead of its somewhat limited range of 160-170 degrees, and should be a little smoother. The focusing marks are too spread out to be any use in measuring distance and puling, but the imprecision of the EF mount makes focusing with distance measurements impossible anyway. Overall, it's a great lens considering the price. If I had the money I'd purchase the entire line.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful Cine for price! I purchased the three Rokinon lenses (24mm, 35mm, and 85) together for less then half the price of the Zeiss and Canon primes for my Canon C100. The reason I bring up the comparison to the expensive Zeiss and Canon primes is because well everyone on the Internet is throwing these three lenses in reviews together. I have never seen anyone compare a Nissan Maxima or even an Audi with a Ferrari or Lamborghini, which is what I think of when people compare these three types of lenses. However, these lenses are fantastic and are worth comparing since the benefits in these lenses are the price, quality of image and build. In comparison with the more expensive primes are slight noticeable breathing when focusing. When light goes across the lens there is a noticeable purplish hue to the image, not always, but it is there. The bokeh is great but not perfectly round as you start going up in aperture. The manual functionality does not allow you to change aperture from the camera, but that's the case most of the time outside of using certain lenses. Finally there is some grain, which is not a big deal since most people are adding grain back in during post nowadays. The lenses themselves are surprisingly built very sturdy and the manual t stop ring and focus ring are very smooth. I am very happy and impressed with the video and image quality from my C100, 5D mark III and 7D. I have also seen exceptional quality on Blackmagic Cinema cameras and the Red Scarlet. For the price these lenses are a no brainer, I recommend anytime!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing lens for the price range! I use this lens with my Canon DSLR to shoot short films and I have been so impressed with the results. Its a bargain lens, so you have to keep that in mind, but the overall build quality and results more than make up for any issues. It is softer at different T-stops, but overall it produces a better quality image than any of the photography lenses I have used. The geared focus and geared and de-clicked aperture are nice features as well. You will not always get the same image you would out of a $5000 lens, but for the price, you get more than what you would expect. This is a budget lens that neither feels like a budget lens nor performs like a budget lens!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Lens in for Warranty Service I have used this lens to produce a number of projects and have been very happy with the results, as I have been with results from the other Rokinon lenses purchased with it as part of a kit from B&H. After a few months use, however, it developed an audible rattle . . . as if a small screw had come loose inside and was floating around. I contacted Rokinon support as soon as I noticed the rattle requesting repair or replacement under warranty (one year). Customer support got back to me within the day and had me send the lens in for examination. No final determination yet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everything you've heard is true This lens is excellent. I own the 85mm and it's terrific as well. Great edge to edge sharpness, even wide open. Some people complain about the build quality of these lenses. They are rock solid. Maybe if you're comparing them to the weight of a zeiss cinema prime or a PL lens, they might feel light. It's every bit as heavy and rugged feeling as my canon 24-70 2.8 L. The fit and finish is great, the glass is spectacular (at ANY price). I would recommend putting a B=W filter on it as soon as you take it out of the box, and never take it off. The front threads on the lens are the only thing that isn't A++

    question

How does it differ from the Rokinon 35mm T1.5 Cine DS Lens for Canon EF Mount?
    Asked by: Wei A.
The first Cine Primes released by Rokinon had the AS designation. The second (and current) version has the DS designation. The differences are as follows: 1.DS lenses have aperture and focus scales printed on both sides of the lens. AS lenses have the scales printed on only one side. 2.The other main difference is that the distance from the mounting flange to the focus gear is uniform on DS series lenses. The same goes for the aperture gear to mounting flange distance. On AS lenses, the distances between gears and mounting flange may differ. For example, The focus gear on my 35mm AS lens is about a half an inch further from the mounting flange than on my 24 or 50 DS lenses. Hope this helps.

    question

If I purchased this lense for my Sony A7S, what would be the main difference between it (Rokinon 35mm T1.5 Cine AS UMC Lens for Canon EF Mount) and the Samyang 35mm T1.5 VDSLRII lense? I know that the differences are very, VERY subtle. I'm using it for professional film-making and I'm using an adapter.
    Asked by: Willie G.
Samyang is the company that makes Samyang, Rokinon and some Bower lenses. Of all these lenses, the Rokinon DS lenses, with their Dual Side focus markings and stricter coating color matching, are considered the top of the line. All the other lenses they make are below that and are the same quality since they they are all made by the same designs, materials and people. So in this case, we are of the opinion the Rokinon and Samyang 85mm have the same optical, mechanical, and build quality and the final question comes down to the brand name. Here Rokinon has the bigger reputation and you pay a little more for it. That has the added advantage that it will help when it comes to sell it.

    question

Has anyone compared the color and resolution to a Canon lens? I am considering using this on a second Blackmagic camera and the footage must match for smooth color grading.
    Asked by: Jim
I use both, and the color seems to match up very well. As long as you use the same camera settings, I don't believe you will have a problem.
