Yasuhara 7.3mm f/4.0 overview

  • 1Description

The Madoka 180 Fisheye Lens for Sony E Mount from Yasuhara is a 7.3mm circular fisheye lens specifically designed for Sony NEX E-mount cameras. Called the Madoka, which means round in old Japanese, the lens offers a 180º angle of view and is the first compact mirrorless camera lens to provide circular fisheye images. The lens itself is very compact and fits well on even the smallest of the NEX cameras, maintaining their portable nature. Yasuhara is developing software that will seamlessly convert this lens' circular images into a square format image with the angular distortion removed, if this is what you desire. The Madoka 180 lens offers a great opportunity to explore the creative possibilities of wide angle shooting with Sony NEX mirrorless cameras.

    Yasuhara 7.3mm f/4.0 reviews

Madoka 180 Fisheye Lens for Sony E Mount is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very impressed! Circular fisheyes are a usually a mixed bag, but this one is surprisingly nice. It's very sharp at the center and actually reasonably sharp in at the edges of the circle too. That isn't something that I can say about many others especially not at this price. Although it's not too hard to focus (using magnification), it's safe to scale focus unless your subject is fairly close. The lens is well built with firm clicks at full stops on the aperture ring. It is surprisingly small and lightweight. The best part, though, is that it produces a nicely centered, fully circular image, without the tops or bottoms getting cropped off. There are two slight negatives, though. The focus ring isn't dampened much at all, so it is easy to inadvertently change the focus distance. Also, the unique lens cap fits a bit loosely. I nearly lost mine on the first day out with the lens. Otherwise I'm very happy using this lens with my Nex 7.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great lens for the price A fisheye like this would normally cost twice what this one costs, which is why I give this 4 stars. It doesn't have the ability to talk to your camera, so the aperture and focus are fully manual. That said, the dual ring controls are very solid and work as smoothly as a high-end lens. All-in-all, it is solidly constructed, and lets you take an amazingly-wide panorama. There are so many possibilities you get with a fisheye, and at this price, it can be a staple in your camera bag. On most shoots I find I want to use it at least a few times, and it is so small it is an easy addition. Highly recommended. My only complaint is that the black area (everything but the circular image) is not always black; some light seems to slip in. It is easy to compensate for by a few moments in photoshop, but about 1 out of 4 pictures have that anomaly that requires me to fill in with black.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid Fisheye We got this for VR and it seems to work really well - pretty sharp, considering buying more to cover entire rig.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Glad I got it. Apparently a high-end industrial/surveillance barrel lens wrapped in a body for use on mirrorless cameras, I'm happy with the deal. Lenses costing much more probably have a silkier iris ring, but this one works; the focus ring is silky-smooth, but my tests show its infinity indicator significantly off (lens focuses fine, just poorly calibrated to the engraved scale): another sign this is not a permium lens, STILL A VERY GOOD ONE. With the Sony 24mp sensor, the Madoka's round image (designed to cover a 2/3"-sized sensor) covers only 6 megapixels, so the lens's limited resolution seems adequate for the effectively much smaller sensor resolution. The color balance of the images is quite warm, perhaps a red-end sensitivity in its industrial heritage; this may be good news for IR shooters, but expect some effort matching (e.g. sky color) with images from other lenses. Image contrast is also good, even with the sun fully in frame; resulting flares are small and usu attractive. Even the lens cap and keeper are well thought out: the length of the cord gives you the object distance at closest focus. Love it! Most importantly, I'm using my Madoka often and getting wonderful images! Fine product!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not for me Does not work well with the Sony NEX-VG10/20. This lens is similar to looking through a doors wide angle peep hole. Its fisheye view was so wide and the lens is so compact that it picked up the microphone on the VG20 camera. Since the microphone is a permanent fixture on the VG20 this lens did not work for me. It did fit readily to the E-mount without a problem.
