Sony NEX-EA50UH overview

  • 1Description

The NEX-EA50UH Camcorder with 18-200mm Servo Zoom Lens initiates Sony's new EA Series of camcorders designed for cinematic event videography. The camera comes with an 18-200mm servo zoom lens, the first E-mount lens with servo zoom. NEX-EA50 features a new Exmor APS-C CMOS sensor and delivers Full HD 1080p at 24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 frames per second. The optional Flash Memory Unit (FMU) provides instant back up recording, however it is not included and must be purchased separately.

The popularity of HDSLRs among videographers can be credited to their filmic video quality, thanks to their large image sensors, and the prospect of professional grade HD video and still photographs, all within one camera body. The NEX-EA50UH was designed with this in mind and it improves on the concept by combining an APS-C sensor, E-mount lenses and DSLR quality still photographs with a camcorder form factor, servo zoom lenses, timecode and professional audio recording capabilities. It also has some truly groundbreaking features that videographers could only dream about before now.

18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Servo Zoom Lens
This is not your average kit lens. It's the first E-mount lens with servo zoom. The 18-200mm also features a quiet auto focus motor for clean audio recordings, four aspherical lens elements, and circular iris blades for pleasing bokeh.
Lossless Digital Zoom
To accommodate Sony's first E-mount lens with servo zoom, the NEX-EA50UH sports a rocker-style zoom lever. The rocker zoom is a familiar feature for long-time camcorder users, but those who are familiar with interchangeable lens systems may wonder, what good is a zoom lever if you are using a prime lens or a manual zoom? Sony's answer to that question is a lossless digital zoom. The effect is achieved by cropping the image sensor in real-time, which changes the angle-of-view with no sacrifice in resolution.
Storage Options
Secure Digital memory cards offer professional grade read/write speeds and dependability at previously unheard of prices. The NEX-EA50UH supports both SD and Sony Memory Stick formats. However, it also features an FMU slot for connecting Sony's HXR-FMU128, a flash memory unit with a capacity of 128 GB. The NEX-EA50UH can record simultaneously to SD/MS and an HXR-FMU128, creating an instant back-up.
Still Photographs
NEX-EA50UH is serious about photography. Not only would its 16MP APS-C CMOS sensor be right at home in the body of a DSLR, NEX-EA50UH also features a dedicated shutter release button, a mechanical shutter to eliminate rolling shutter artifacts, and a hot shoe for using traditional flash units.
Unique Design Features
The NEX-EA50UH may be a somewhat eccentric looking mutt, but the design grows on you. It is particularly handsome with the viewfinder diopter tube, a shotgun microphone, and the 18-200mm servo zoom lens attached. Another nice design attribute is the shoulder pad, which slides backwards to accommodate a comfortable shoulder-mounted position.

    Sony NEX-EA50UH reviews

NEX-EA50UH Camcorder with 18-200mm Servo Zoom Lens is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 60.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Leaves them for dead I am a wedding videographer and had been looking for a second camera when I found this one. I had been using a canon xha1s and was having trouble finding another canon in my price range that could perform in low light situations. The NEX-EA50UH blows all other cameras I have seen out of the water. The picture quality is amazing and you would not even know it was filming in low light when using a mounted camera light. The colors are bright and clear and the light is evenly spread. Even with it set on auto the dancefloor shots are crystal clear. It performs like a pro camera well above its price range!. The 16 megapixel stills are an add bonus with the ability to use a mounted flash adding to the joy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from HDSLR quality in video camera I'm a pro wedding videographer doing this full time for 13 years. Finally I've got SLR quality camera. Picture quality is superb. Low light performance is good- no noise. Sound and controls are very good. Works good in auto pilot mode very well. I like auto white balance- just hold camcorder for a few seconds an you can get perfect white balance. Servo zoom is smooth using remote lance controller. Zoom could be faster, but hey, this is SLR lens - I'm happy that I can zoom while I'm recording. I think this is a very good entry level pro camera for the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I Love This Camera I love this camera, i work for a broadcasting network in my city. Ive used cameras from Panasonic-Canon. By far this camera is the best. It has an amazing price for the broadcast quality. The only thing this camera is missing is an HD-SDI output. I run component into either a Newtek Tricaster 300 or 455. im also a big fan of the E-Mount lenses. Even for my hobby of filming skateboarding, i can use a E-Mount fisheye. Also the weight is perfect, not to light and not to heavy. I will continue to use this camera everyday in my sports broadcasts. Also BH shows that Recording Media isn't included with the camera, when i opened the box, there was a 16 gig sony card in the box with a note saying Thanks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One word: Awesome! I am a professional videographer, and wanted one of thses cameras for over a year. For the price, they offer all the features needed to produce video that clients will be pleased with. Let me first start by saying that this camera is incredibly easy to get around - the lay out is very user-friendly, and I like that you can access all of the meus items while the view-tube is in place and not have to use the touch screen. I read the reiviews that complained about poor low light performance, and no ND filters. Waaaaa!!! You little babies - what do you want for under 4 grand? This camera is friggin LOADED with everything a pro needs but doesn't have the 8 - 10 grand for the really high-end camera. The best part about this rig is that you can take care of any issue by purchasing lenses. You can get low light lenses pretty cheaply, and with the right adapter, you can use Cannon lenses as well. (Take that all you 5D dorks who keep whining that DSLR's are so much better - NOT ANYMORE) I could go on and on - in reality, the cons are pretty minor - so much so, they don't bear mentioning. The bottom line is this: For under 4 grand, you get a fantastic camera that will shoot true HD and will serve just about any need you have.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I was expecting APS DSLR Video Quality I purchased this camera hoping to obtain video quality similar to Canon APS DSLR's. I have not yet reached that point. This camera is a good second camera for interviews, field production and events. It is somewhat front heavy due to the included lens. All buttons and controls are very well placed making it easier than the NX5U to control. The Viewfinder is simply GREAT. An ND filter and an Exposure Lock will make this product a 5 Star for its price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Camcorder with the benefits of a DSLR I've had the ea50 for a few weeks now, and so far I'm very happy with it. The image quality is at least as good as what I got with my 60D, and unlike the 60D, this is a full-functioning camcorder with 2 XLR inputs and a shoulder rest. I had been debating between buying this camcorder and the FS100. While the the FS100 has a better sensor and more slo-mo options, this camcorder has better ergonomic qualities, a servo lens, and a much better price.Minuses: It seems a little weak in low-light. Also, the build doesn't seem to strong, it's a terrific deal. For someone who has to run-and-gun at events, wants the DSLR look, needs XLR inputs and real audio controls, and doesn't want to spend$ this camera is a great option.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Real professional video camera During the past 10 years my video recording has become more and more serious and more and more profession. So I switched to prosumer video cameras, to get better quality and more connection capabilities. But I did keep a jealous eye on the real professional cameras. But those remained out of my league until Sony announced the NEX-EA50 in August of 2012. While still somewhat above what I had planned to spend, the quality, flexibility and options (due to the formfactor, including the extendible shoulder mount) offered with this camera made me cave and order it. It then took three months before Sony started shipping, during which period I waited in eager anticipation. Unfortunately final shipment missed an important project, where it would have been great to have this camera, by a weak. Having used the camera now for a couple of weeks, I'm increasingly happy with all that it offers. From the exchangeable E-mount lens, to all the connections (including XLR audio) and the shoulder mount that I mentioned earlier. The image quality (in up to 1080/60p resolution) is fabulous, as is the sound quality. The weight is well-balanced for tripod use AND on the shoulder.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from EA50 , FS100 & FS700 I've been pairing this camera with the FS100 and FS700 on my last 5 shoots, on every shoot the client says they like the look of the EA50 (pp5), better than the FS100 (pp5) and FS700 (pp4 & pp5) cameras. I think it's due to the rich color rendering of the EA50 right out of the camera. We tend to match the other 2 cameras to the EA50 in post. We are shooting under the same lighting conditions with all three cameras. On our shoot yesterday we needed to grab some B-roll shots and the camera op grabbed the EA50 rather than the FS700. I suggested he take the FS700 as we were to shoot in an available light situation; however he said he preferred to shoot with the EA50, as it was easier to run and gun with the shoulder mount and the power zoom. Looking at the footage today I have to say the only difference is the Ea50 looks a little crisper with a bit more color saturation than the FS700 which looks a bit more soft and washed out in (PP5) and a bit too contrast (y) in (pp4), although overall both cameras look and sound very good. PP5- picture profile: Cine-Gama #1 & Cine-Color #1
