Sony HDR-AS10 overview

  • 1Description

The compact and rugged Sony HDR-AS10 HD Action Camcorder is designed for point-of-view (POV) shooting during action sports including skiing, snowboarding, skateboarding, surfing, motocross, skydiving, mountain biking and other outdoor adventure sports. The lightweight, wearable action camcorder weighs only 3.2 oz (90 g) and it supports up to Full HD 1920 x 1080p video recording at 30 frames per second (fps). It also supports other shooting modes including a 2x and 4x Slow Motion Video Mode. The 2x Slow Motion Mode supports 1280 x 720p video capture at 60 fps and the 4x Slow Motion Mode supports 1280 x 720p video capture at an amazing 120 fps. Having 120 frames per second to break down video frame-by-frame makes the 4x Slow Motion Mode a valuable tool for both movie making and review of your tricks, line, form and technique.

Sony includes a ruggedized waterproof housing with the HDR-AS10. The waterproof housing has a universal tripod mount and is waterproof down to a depth of 197' (60 m). It is also dirt and dust resistant, which makes the camera nearly impervious to mud, snow, rain, sand and grime. The HDR-AS10 also comes with two adhesive mounts that securely attach to most flat and curved surfaces.

The HDR-AS10 is equipped with a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens that supports an ultra-wide 170° viewing angle. The camera also has a back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS image sensor, which supports superb low light performance and Full HD video. To compensate for camera shake that's typical when shooting POV sports action, the Sony action camera features SteadyShot image stabilization with Active Mode. SteadyShot uses an innovative 3-way shake-canceling function to reduce blur caused by camera shake.

Other convenient features on the HDR-AS10 include "Press-n-Go" recording, HDMI connectivity and a built-in stereo microphone for capturing high-quality audio to go along with the Full HD video. The "Press-n-Go" recording function allows you to press a large start/stop button just once to begin recording, and the HDMI output lets you playback your footage on a large HDTV screen in 1080p Full HD resolution. The camera is also outfitted with a Memory Stick Micro and microSD/SDHC memory card slot for recording directly onto a memory card.

    Sony HDR-AS10 reviews

HDR-AS10 HD Action Camcorder is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 27.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good little camcorder I used this camera for a fall recumbent riding video I put on youtube. I used the headband mount for use without the waterproof case. I was impressed with the video and I like that it doesn't come out as warm as the drift which looks a little yellow sometimes. I love the on button. Easy and no guessing once you learn to recognize the on and off sounds. The audio seemed decent as well. Actually the audio was very good for the winds I was facing. Some cons:Lens is not rotatable.Tripod mount only on water proof case.Once in the the waterproof case, the camera is no longer lighter than a drift or contour.Great video, but lacking in terms of mounting options.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Camera for the Money Bought the camera for a more unusual application, filming shotgun practice and hunts. Super Slow is great, gives great clarity at a very slow speed. Standard HD gives excellent quality. I did not go for the AS15 after poor reviews on the wi-fi for Android platforms. The cameras appear identical other than wi-fi. Fish eye effect is noticeable, distance objects are a bit fuzzy. No zoom is a handicap for what I wanted to do, but no action cam has that. The case is rugged, see other comments on lack of ability to get a mic in the case. The only hardware weakness is the pop-open door to access the ports and memory card. It feels delicate, it may last forever but I can see something breaking on it. User interface is good, easy to pick up and use. Looking forward to some accessories coming on the market for the camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You get more than what you pay for The HDR-AS10 is a great cam and has awesome video quality. I think it is by far the best action camera you can get for a low price. This Sony cam fits my needs perfectly with its above-average low light video quality and the fisheye lens is only an added bonus! If you are looking for a rugged, yet still high quality handheld cam, then this is the one for you. It also has slow-mo options which look fantastic. Just another great product from Sony!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So light, that it flies!!, great quality I use it in a cuadropter for aerial videography, and even with the waterproof case, it doesn't destabilizes the whole rig. The quality of the images are very superior to that of the GoPro Hero, an the ability to change between 120 and 170 degrees of view is an extra. I recommend this camera even for event videography because of the head use that you could take from it and leave 2 hands free for photo or other uses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sony on a bike helmet I like the HDR-AS 10Action camcorder.Very steady motion picture, and easy to use. I never had a video recorder before and to set it up is very simple. I don't mind the thing not having a screw in tripod mount but the waterproof case being slightly grey in coloured plastic acts as a slight ND filter and the pics a are a bit brighter when the cam is used externally, with just the head band. I would like a seperate front plastic cover for when in fine weather with the cover lens drilled out. Then you would have all the fixing points and clear view. Of course the supplied curved stick on mount is useless as it would be impossible to suite every ones helmet, so there is a bit of work there and I made a mount to suite my helmet. But the main thing, the video is excellent and very shake free at 720 x 30 fps and 120 degrees. Going to max res of 1080 and 170 degres, turns off the 3 way shake filter, but still very good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Remarkable HD footage. I needed footage of a couple indoor water slides, so I ordered the AS10 since it came complete with a waterproof case. The video was exactly what I was looking for - the capacity for 60 and 120 fps slow-mo was a bonus.I see they've just introduced a monitor (for $) to make it possible to see your footage immediately. That's on my Christmas list.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptional! Going to buy more of these! I've had the Contour+ and Hero2. Neither of their batteries lasted longer than maybe 2 hours. I have consistently been able to get 5hours out of the battery with the same style of usage. (Recording on and off) I love the speed in which you press record and it just starts recording. The contour+ always took forever and would often miss a shot because of the wait.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Terrible quality, not thought through I just purchased this hoping for performance similar to the GoPro 2. The CZ reference is total marketing fabrication. The image is grainy even in perfect light conditions. The camera's back door is loose after 2 gentle uses. The splash-proof housing is weak, poorly designed and ready to break. The menu on the camera is insanly frusterating and onyl uses 2 buttons to navigate everything. I don't have any idea how this camera is rated above 3 stars. Nothing about it is good, and I'm a huge Sony fan (I've owned 3 of their DSLR's and many P&S cameras), so I was hoping this would be a surprise hit. I'd rather not go with a GoPro so it looks like I better do my own research. The reviews on here re: action cam's seem to be skewed towards the positive-- strange.
