Apricorn Velocity Solo x2 overview

  • 1Description

The Velocity Solo x2 SSD Upgrade Kit for Desktop PCs & Mac Pro from Apricorn is an industry standard PCIe 2.0 card designed to add a 2.5" Solid State Drive (SSD)¹ via a super fast SATA III connection to your desktop PC or Mac Pro. With data transfer rates of 6 Gbps, SATA III is twice as fast as SATA II and takes full advantage of the latest SSD. Using a Marvel 9182 controller chip, the Velocity Solo x2 is bootable in both PC and Mac systems. It uses a single PCIe 2.0 x2 and larger² slot delivering read and write speeds of up to 550³ MBps when used with one SSD (up to 800 MBps speeds when configured with two drives). The Velocity Solo is backwards compatible with PCIe 1.0 slot and also supports SATA II and SATA I SSDs. It is TRIM compatible and if the Operating System supports TRIM, it can access drive capacities in excess of 2.2 TB.

The Velocity Solo x2 also provides an additional auxiliary SATA III data connection port that can be used to connect another SSD or HDD to provide unparalleled capacity and performance. It is ideal for use as a boot disk or scratch disk and useful for high resolution image editing, video editing and gaming. The Velocity Solo is easy to install, especially since it is compatible with Windows XP, Vista, 7 and Mac Pro. Once installed, it transfers your OS and applications from your desktop hard drive to your new SSD using Apricorn's EZ Gig cloning software with Data Select for PC systems, or Apple's built-in Disk Utility for Mac Pro.

Note:
1: Solid State Drive (SDD) sold separately.
2: x2 slots are uncommon in most desktop systems. Typical installation will use an x4 slot or larger.
3: Actual data speeds are dependent on individual system and SSD performance.

Ideal for High Performance
Running your OS and applications on an SSD provides a measureable performance increase. However, the Velocity Solo also serves as the perfect upgrade for improving gaming performance. As games become too large for their assets to be fully cached on modern graphics cards and main memory, the addition of an SSD for faster disk access during game play results in less in-game pauses and gives a smoother playing experience. Games are also faster to load and save when using an SSD.
Easy Installation
The Velocity Solo x2 enables you to connect 2.5" SSD via SATA III interface (6 Gbps). It uses a single PCIe 2.0 x2 or larger slot delivering data transfer speeds up to 550 MBps when used with one SSD (up to 800 MBps speeds when configured with two drives). Simply connect your solid state drive to the Velocity Solo SATA III connector and slide into an available PCIe 2.0 x2 slot in your desktop PC. Once installed, download and run Apricorn's EZ Gig cloning software and your upgrade is complete. For additional capacity, use the auxiliary SATA III connector for a super fast connection to an additional hard drive or solid state drive. The Velocity Solo is backwards compatible with PCIe 1.0 slot as well as with SATA II and SATA I SSDs
Apricorn's EZ Gig Cloning Software with Data Select/ Apple's Disk Utility
The Velocity Solo is bundled with Apricorn's EZ Gig Cloning software or Windows with Data Select. Data Select provides a simple method to deselect data folders from the cloning process which is useful when migrating from a large HDD to a smaller SSD and perfect for creating a boot disk. This gives you the option to run your OS and applications from a fast, smaller SSD boot drive, while keeping your documents and media files on your original hard drive. For Mac Pro, use Apple's built-in Disk Utility.
Compatible with TRIM Command
The Velocity Solo x2 is TRIM compatible and if the Operating System supports TRIM, it can access drive capacities in excess of 2.2 TB.
Target Applications:
Boot disk
Scratch disks for design applications
High resolution image editing and manipulation
Photo editing and retouching
Video editing and post-processing
Gaming
Windows and Mac Compatible
The Velocity Solo x2 is compatible with Windows XP, Vista, 7 and Mac OS x 10.4 or later version.

    Apricorn Velocity Solo x2 reviews

Velocity Solo X2 SSD Upgrade Kit for Desktop PCs & Mac Pro is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works right out of the pack I installed the Velocity Solo X2 with a 1 TB Samung 840 EVO in a 2010, 6 core, 3.33Ghz Mac Pro. I used the Apple Disk Utility to clone the original start up HD and since then the Velocity X2 has been working perfectly. It's a very good upgrade and should keep my Mac up to date for another 2 years. The only problem is a very long start up time due ( I suspect) to the Mac being started from a PCI card instead of the internal drive bays. Since I normally only start up once a day it's not a problem, just a little scary the first time. When up and running the Mac wakes up from sleep instantly and software loads almost as fast.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from works with samsung 840 in mac pro 2008 This is an awesome product. Works flawlessly in my 2008 Mac Pro. The only reason I gave it 3 stars instead of 5 is that it has issues booting in bootcamp with Windows 7 64 bit. It boots fine the first time it is installed but after that, it won't boot unless first shut down (NOT restarted) in Mac OS. I also cannot have a HHD plugged in with another Windows installation (Windows Vista in my case) otherwise it automatically boots in that OS instead of the SSD plugged into the Velocity x2. I have also tried the Velocity x1 and it had none of these boot issues but I decided to keep the Velocity Solo x2 since it has faster read/write speeds. Having to boot down in MAC OSx isn't that annoying considering how fast booting and shutting down is with a SSD.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Mac Pro 2009 Upgrade I installed this in a 2009 Mac Pro. In combination with a Samsung 500GB SSD, it has made for significant speed increase in launching apps and booting up. No drivers, it just works. Easy to attach SSD drive. I had no issues with conflicts. Noticable speed increase over spinning disk on stock SATA II connections, but I don't have benchmark numbers. It has a connector for a second drive - data only not power. It would have been nice if there was power and a physical way to mount a second drive. I've installed this setup in two separate Mac Pro's with no issues. Would buy again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Apricorn Velocity Solo x2 SATAIII Card This card is being used on a 2010 Mac Pro in a PCIe2 slot with a Samsung 840 Series 500GB SSD. The card allows full SATAIII speeds, and is working as designed. The SSD Drive is very fast with this drive attached. My boot time with the card, drive combo has been reduced from 40 seconds to 25 seconds. My only issue has been the ability to update the drives firmware to the latest revision. Samsung writes firmware for use on both PCs and Macs - A very good thing, IMHO. The firmware update would not recognize the drive when it was used in conjunction with the Apricorn card. I needed to remove the SSD from the Solo card and attach it to an SATAII cable hooked directly to the MOBO. Once that was done it updated just fine. I then returned it to the Solo x2, and none of the data had been erased and the drive had the latest firmware.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid This is a solid expansion option for those still using their tower style MacPro's. Easily added to an open PCIe slot. The four drive slots were already occupied.Price is a bit high, and packaging was reminicient of the early tech days, but this worked without driver installs and was running in minutes. The only negative I would say is that the drive shows an eject icon in the system, so it's showing as an external drive. There are apparently tricks to remove this that I will eventually do most likely.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great in Mac Pro Mid 2012 Put 500GB SSD on it and it improved speed of startup and program load dramatically. It was easy to install, nothing more to do that screw the drive on and pop it in. Booted with existing drive, formatted (it will appear as an external at this point), installed OSX 10.11 and changed my boot drive and it works great (and when you make it the boot drive, it appears as an internal drive). Very inexpensive way to get some serious speed. Fits with two graphics cards installed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product I installed this in an older MSI motherboard that doesn't have SATA III ports. Install went w/o a hitch after downloading the latest BIOS from Apricorn as directed, then installing the board. After setting the mobo BIOS to boot from the new board everything worked fine. My Windows experience in Win 7 went from 7.7 to 7.9 and the speed update is noticeable, especially when accessing my secondary data drive. I only wish that it was a little less expensive.
