Oben BA-117T overview

  • 1Description

The BA-117T Single Lever Travel Ball Head from Oben is a simple ball head with one locking knob to control all motion. The knob allows you to unlock the ball so that you can quickly orient your camera properly, retighten the knob, and return to shooting. This enables fast setup changes, and frees you to keep a finger on the trigger while you're making a quick adjustment to the head's orientation.

This travel ball head has a trim profile, making it ideal for compact travel tripods that have reversible folding legs. It also has a 90° notch which facilitates shooting in portrait orientation. One bull's eye and three tubular bubble levels ensure your camera is level on both the horizontal and vertical axes.

The included quick-release plate has a retractable video pin, and attaches to your camera via its standard 1/4"-20 screw. With your camera attached to the quick-release plate, it easily snaps and locks into place on the ball head, and a safety lock on the release lever prevents it from being accidentally released.

    Oben BA-117T reviews

BA-117T Single Lever Travel Ball Head is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Second times a charm Oben fan I am! They make a nice head for not a lot of cash. I love the single lever simplicity on this model. Oben's gem holds my heavier gear nice and stable, at least does a better job than the two BA-106 I foolishly bought first. (Don't get me wrong, BA106 are just fine, but BA-117 offers more piece of mind after I stepped up to a 300mm DA* lens on my K3 with grip.) Sometimes it's not cheap to live and learn.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very sturdy and smooth This is my first ball head and I am very happy with it. Good, secure quick-lock and I particularly like the snap in feature - slide one side of the quick mount in and when I push down the other side it engages a small pin that closes the lock. It may be a bit of overkill for my M4/3 system, but it is very comforting having such a positive ball lock (with battery holder grip and 75-300 attached) with minimal torque on the single lever. I mounted it on an old Solidex VT-87 video tripod I picked up at a yard sale and the T model fits the diameter well. I am very happy with my new rig.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Have A Ball Head The ball moves smoothly thereby permitting smooth and easy panning. The only issue is that with the locking lever tightened, when I let go of the camera the camera 'settles'. I am a guy that has broken things in the past overtightening and have a reputation of being very strong. Consequently I started out being concerned about overtightening the lever and ruining it. That hasn't happened, which is of course a good thing, but it often doesn't stay put after putting a lot of torque on the lever.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versatile Travel Head Good, relatively lightweight travel head. A few reviews suggested it would slip with a long lens, but I have not found the problem with the camera mount on my smaller lenses through 300MM, nor with the lens mount on my large 100-400MM lens. I am using it both on a tripod and monopod, and do not see the need for a second head at this point.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Glad I bought it This is a replacement for the old head on my tripod. Never used a ball type before. I like it. Excellent craftsmanship. Sturdy. I expect that it will last for many years. I use it for my dslr camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Oben BA-117T Ball Head Works very well. Much easier to use than having to twist a knob. It locks in right where I put it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nicely designed, lightweight with plently of capacity. I have this ball head for over 3 months now and love it. It's lightweight but still hold my 5D with a long lens without any problem. I saw complaints about the levels - cannot figure out the issue they have. Please that I bought this unit and strongly recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love It! Paired this with the leg section of a Sunpac 3 section carbon fiber tripod set. Used it to replace the pistol grip head that came with it. With the Oben Travel Ball Head it is a perfect set up as my travel tripod kit.
