Sony NEX-6 Overview

  • 1Description

Sony's Alpha NEX-6 Mirrorless Digital Camera (Black, Body Only) is a compact interchangeable lens camera that delivers high-resolution images using an APS-C size 16.1MP CMOS sensor. In addition to still photos, the NEX-6 records full HD 1920 x 1080 video in 60p, 60i, or cinematic 24p. Whether shooting stills or video, the high-resolution sensor works with the BIONZ processor to create sharp, detailed images.

The camera accepts Alpha NEX E-mount lenses, including normal-range, wide-angle, wide-to-telephoto and portrait-to-long telephoto zooms, mid-range, wide-angle and macro primes, and wide-angle and fisheye converters. Using optional Alpha NEX Camera Mount Adapters, you can also use Alpha A-mount lenses on the camera.

The camera is equipped with a large 3" (7.6 cm) 921K-pixel TFT LCD monitor. The screen's angle can be adjusted. The LCD also features peaking. The XGA OLED Tru-Finder EVF is an electronic, eye-level through-the-lens viewfinder with a 2359K-pixel resolution and a high contrast ratio.

The NEX-6 has Fast Hybrid Autofocus, a feature commonly found only in DSLRs. It combines phase detection AF for quick response when tracking fast-moving subjects (vital when shooting at up to 10 fps), and contrast-detection for more precision. A further refinement in focusing is Peaking AF display, which makes manual focusing more precise by highlighting the edges that are in focus using a color of your choice (white, red, or yellow).

Wi-Fi capability is built into the NEX-6, and it's also compatible with Sony's PlayMemories camera apps. Using these two features, you'll be able to do things like tether your camera to your smartphone with the ability to see the image on your phone and use your phone to trigger your NEX-6. You can also do time-lapse photography, or transfer photos directly from your NEX-6 to your smartphone (allowing you to share them directly with friends) or immediately upload photos to social media sites like Facebook.

Quick Navi control puts Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, and Manual functions at your fingertips, along with many other creative options, giving the NEX-6 a DSLR feeling without the DSLR bulk. A Photo Creativity interface has settings like Background Defocus, Color, Vividness, as well as most Picture Effects that can be easily changed and seen in real time, using the control dial.

The NEX-6 features a six-image layering technology, which quickly takes six photos in low light and combines them into one photo for a sharper picture in Hand-held Twilight mode, and to control blur in Anti-Motion Blur mode. Auto HDR (High Dynamic Range) is also built-in. It automatically takes multiple images of high-contrast scenes and combines them for a picture with improved contrast control. The built-in flash is also useful as a fill light in low-light situations.

The Multi-Interface Shoe on the top of the camera not only allows you to use Sony flashes, it's compatible with Handycam accessories such as microphones for recording high-quality sound, opening up further possibilities for shooting video.

16.1 MP APS-C Size CMOS Image Sensor
The same sensor format that Sony builds into the full-sized α DSLRs. With 13 times the area of the typical point-and-shoot image sensor, APS-C makes the difference between "snapshots" and "photographs," delivering an exceptional combination of high resolution, high sensitivity and pleasingly blurred backgrounds.
E-Mount Lens Compatibility with A-Mount Lens Option
The camera accepts Alpha NEX E-mount lenses, including normal-range, wide-angle, wide-to-telephoto and portrait-to-long telephoto zooms; mid-range, wide-angle and macro primes; and wide-angle and fisheye converters. With optional Alpha NEX Camera Mount Adapters, you can also use Alpha A-mount lenses on the camera
Fast Hybrid AF
Sony's advanced Fast Hybrid AF combines two technologies for improved performance: Phase detection AF for quick response that is ideal when tracking fast-moving subjects and contrast-detection AF for added precision. An appropriate match that delivers optimal Auto Focus for fast, precise focusing in any scene. Phase-detection AF has 99 points, while contrast-detection AF has 25 points. AF Illuminator: Built-in, LED type, with a range of approx. 1-9.8' / 0.3-3.0 m (with E PZ16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OSS attached). AF micro adjustment with LA-EA2 (sold separately)
3" 921K-Dot TFT LCD
Angle Adjustment: Up - Approx. 90 degrees, Down - Approx. 45 degrees. Brightness Control: Manual (5 steps between -2 and +2), Sunny Weather mode. Real-time image adjustment display: On/Off. Peaking: Yes (Level setting: High/Mid/Low/Off, Color: White/Red/Yellow). Customization: Graphic display/Display all info/Big font size display/No display info/Levels/Histogram/Viewfinder
XGA Tru-Finder OLED Viewfinder
This eye-level, through-the-lens viewfinder begins with 2359K dots for improved resolution and a high contrast ratio for incredible depth. OLED reduces motion blur to a bare minimum. You can also see the results of camera adjustments in real time with striking color and detail. Brightness control: Auto, Manual (3 steps between -1 and +1). Display: Basic info; Levels; Histogram
Wi-Fi Sharing
Wi-Fi capability lets users transfer photos directly to smartphones and tablets with the PlayMemories mobile app. Wi-Fi capability allows for sharing, viewing and saving photos for expanded photo-shooting enjoyment. Photos can be easily transferred to smartphones and tablets, viewed on large screen TVs, or saved to PCs.
Advanced Control Dial
Mode control dial and Quick Navi assure quick and intuitive operation comparable to a DSLR's. Control dial and Fn (function) button combine to facilitate speed in getting the shot.
Full HD Movies at 60p/60i/24p
Capture HD movies in your choice of smooth 60p, standard 60i or cinematic 24p, all at full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution. AVCHD codec delivers exceptional picture quality. MP4 codec offers smaller files for easier upload to the web.
Multi-Interface Shoe
Unlike conventional cameras, the NEX-6 features a newly developed Multi-Interface Shoe that expands compatibility with Handycam accessories, thus raising the potential for photo/movie shooting.
Built-in GN6 Pop-up Flash
A built-in Guide Number 6 flash is located on top of the camera. It is ideal for shooting in dimly lit settings and can be used as a fill flash when shooting in bright sunshine or to produce catch lights in portraits. The flash combines with high ISO 3200 (extendable up to 25600) and a large APS-C HD CMOS sensor for beautiful low-light photos. Max angle of coverage equivalent to 16mm focal length
Electronic Shutter

Combining Face Detection and By Pixel Super Resolution technologies with rule of thirds, Auto Portrait Framing provides composed and appealingly balanced full resolution portraits.
Clear Image Zoom
Utilizing Sony's exclusive By Pixel Super Resolution Technology, Clear Image Zoom increases the effective focal length of your lens up to 2x by digitally magnifying the center of your image with minimal degradation. It virtually doubles the effective focal length of whatever lens you're using providing greater shooting flexibility.
Digital Zoom
Approx. 4x (still images and movies)
Convenient USB Charging
Easily recharge the camera via USB charging. Simply connect the bundled USB cable and recharge the battery without removing it from the camera, either via AC outlet or PC connection.
Auto HDR Built Into Camera
High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography captures more scene contrast than a single exposure can handle by combining the best highlight detail from one shot and the best shadow detail from another for one incredible shot. Until recently, you needed a computer and editing software. Sony builds HDR in. Handles severe backlighting and other high-contrast scenes. (Recommended for still subjects.). Auto Exposure Difference, Exposure difference Level (1.0-6.0 EV at 1.0 EV step), off
6-Image Layering
The camera leverages the large, APS-C image sensor and captures six images in a fraction of a second. The camera then combines the data from the 6 different images up to ISO 25600 to create a single image. This method is used to control blur in Anti-Motion Blur mode or to get cleaner, sharper nighttime pictures in Hand-held Twilight mode.
Sweep Panorama Technology
Capture expansive landscapes automatically. Press the shutter, sweep vertically or horizontally. The camera does the rest, continuously shooting images and stitching them together for up to a 23MP image size. The camera is capable of up to a 202-deg; sweep angle (16mm focal length).
Anti-Motion Blur Mode
Corrects for subject movement to capture clean, sharp images in low light. The camera leverages the large, APS-C image sensor and captures six images in a fraction of a second. Combining the data from all six creates a single image that minimizes subject blur.
Intelligent Auto Focus
Pre-focuses as you compose the shot, further reducing focusing time to a bare minimum.
Peaking AF Display
The Peaking AF display makes precise manual focusing much easier by highlighting the edges that are in focus in your choice of three colors (white, red, or yellow). This is especially helpful during macro or portrait photography where your focal plane can make or break your shot.
Manual Focus Assist
Greatly magnifies the viewfinder image (4.8x, 9.6x) when you touch the focus ring, making it easy to get razor-sharp images. Works with E-mount lenses only.
Enhanced Tracking Focus
Tracking Focus continuously tracks a user-designated subject and is now more effective at tracking people. If the subject turns away from the camera, face-detection tracking automatically switches to subject tracking and continues tracking.
Face Detection Technology
The camera can automatically detect up to eight individual faces and adjust focus, exposure, white balance and flash to help deliver crisp, properly lit images of family and friends. It can prioritize children or adults.
Smile Shutter Technology
Captures a smile the moment it happens. Simply select the Smile Shutter mode and the camera takes the picture automatically. You can prioritize children or adults and adjust the smile sensitivity.
D-Range Optimizer (DRO)
Improves results with backlit subjects and recovers details hidden in shadows. Settings include Auto Level with a choice of five operating levels and Off.
Exposure Compensation
Still images: +/- 3 EV in 1/3EV steps; Movies: +/- 2 EV in 1/3EV steps
Exposure Bracketing
With 1/3, 2/3, 1, 2, 3EV increments; 3 frames
Noise Reduction
Long Exposure NR: (On/Off, available at shutter speeds longer than 1 second). High ISO NR: (High/Normal/Low)
Creative Styles (6 Modes)
Control how the camera processes your images with six finishing styles: Standard, Vivid, Portrait, Landscape, Sunset and B&W (Contrast (-3 to +3 steps)). You can even fine-tune contrast, saturation (-3 to +3 steps), and sharpness (-3 to +3 steps) to your personal taste.
PhotoTV HD Compatibility
Optimizes compatible BRAVIA televisions for flattering display of digital pictures.
MS Duo/ SD Slot
For cost-effective, convenient storage and sharing of your images, the camera accepts Memory Stick PRO Duo/Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo and SD/SDHC/SDXC media (Class 4 or higher recommended). Memory card is required (sold separately).
Anti-Dust Sensor
Anti-Dust Technology helps keep the CMOS sensor clean, resulting in consistently clear pictures. First a static-free coating on the sensor's low-pass filter helps repel dust. Then vibration automatically dislodges dust from the sensor.

    Sony NEX-6 Reviews

Alpha NEX-6 Mirrorless Digital Camera (Black, Body Only) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 221.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must buy ! I have the NEX 5 and 6. After using both, the NEX 6 with built in viewfinder and flash isuch better than without. More convenient and slight heavier but worth it! Great point and shoot and lighter than dlrs. Happy lenses are interchangeable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My new NEX 6 I have been using a NEX 5n for over two years, during that time I have found things that SONY could have improved on. The electronic viewfinder was a big one, the cost of the NEX 5 add on viewfinder was a bit high. With SONY's introduction of the NEX 6 (that has a wonderful electronic viewfinder) I purchased the NEX 6 and find that I rarely use my old NEX5n. SONY's NEX 6 is the perfect camera for me, the fact that I can use all my older SONY E lenses is a definite plus I like the simplified exposure system, and enjoy the return of the old style exposure wheel on the top of the camera. All the camera controls are easy to understand and use. I am sorry to see that SONY is replacing the older NEX series of cameras with their new line of A cameras. I am happy to see that SONY continues with cameras using the E lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful and compact. It's been years since I have owned an SLR. I have been using a digital point and shoot recently until buying the Nex 6. I am amazed at the capabilities of this camera, particularly the low light image fidelity, and I love the compact form factor. Only thing I miss is a 3.5mm mic in but I am looking into my hotshoe mic options.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for video I purchased this camera on sale as an upgrade from my Sony A65. I was a bit frustrated by the lack of optically stabilized lenses available for Sony's A-mount cameras. Most of Sony's E-mount lenses have optical stabilization (OSS) which I believe yields better hand-held video than the in-camera digital stabilization the A-mount cameras have. I purchased Sony's 50mm f1.8 OSS lens with this camera and have been amazed by the sharpness of the pictures, the speed of the autofocus, and the quality of the video it produces paired the NEX6. I also really like the versatility of the Sony's E-mount cameras for adapting other lenses, I purchased a Sony A to E mount adapter and Nikon F to Sony E adapter which both work great for photos, or video when the camera is on a tripod due to the lack of optical stabilization on those lenses. The downsides to the NEX6 that I've noticed are that the menu is a bit move difficult to navigate than the A65's, and the aperture dial on my particular model has a bit of play in it, not that it feels like it will break, it just doesn't seem as well made as the rest of the camera which, overall, seems pretty solid. The battery life isn't great but it wasn't as bad as I expected after reading other reviews, still I decided to purchase a second battery and if I spend most of the day shooting there is no doubt I will need it. The upside is the charging port is the same micro-usb port that most phones have, so phone chargers will typically work as long as they don't exceed 5V/1A. The charging speed of the 0.5A wall charger that came with the camera is painfully slow, I'd recommend using a 1A charger if you have one. I give this camera 5 stars, though you can get more camera for more money, this camera met or exceeded every expectation I had for it and at a very reasonable price point.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Camera I have ever owned I bought my first one two years ago and bought the second one at the lower price. Excellent for both video and stills and use a variety of lens for both.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from As Expected I upgraded from the NEX-5. I love the EVF and the wifi. If I could suggest one improvement it would be the on-off switch. The design on the NEX-5 was much better; easier to turn the camera on and off.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great but not perfect I bought this camera to use for travel photography as an amateur - I was looking at portability, cost, and image quality as my main factors. The NEX-6 meets and exceeds all my needs. I recently got more into videography and this works for that too (again, at an amateur level), but primarily it's good for taking photos in RAW. The few downsides are accessibility of settings/menu (there are 3 softkeys + 2 dials + 1 wheel, I think, and sometimes they're just not as manual/hands-on/quick as I'd like them to be but then again I'm still getting a feel for the camera and this is my personal preference) and short battery life.

    question

will the Tamron 18-270 Di II PZD lens work on the Sony Alpha NEX-6 mirror less digital camera?????
    Asked by: Anonymous
No, the Tamron 18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II PZD Lens for Sony (B&H # TA1827035S) would not be directly compatible with the Sony Alpha NEX-6 Mirrorless Digital Camera. The Tamron 18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II PZD Lens for Sony is designed for the standard Sony Alpha A mount or Minolta MAXXUM lens mount. The Sony Alpha NEX-6 Mirrorless Digital Camera uses the newer, smaller Sony E-Mount. If you wish to use the 18-270mm lens on the NEX-6, you could use the Sony A-Mount to E-Mount Lens Adapter with Translucent Mirror Technology, B&H # SOLAEA4, or you could consider purchasing the Tamron 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 Di III VC Lens for Sony E Mount (B&H # TA1820035SB) for your needs, as it would need no adapter to mount onto the Sony NEX-6.

    question

How long does the battery work under full operation with wifi, for example?
    Asked by: Anonymous
According to Sony, when using an LCD screen, the number of still images recordable with a single charge of the battery pack is approximately 360 images, and 270 images with the viewfinder. The number of images is calculated using full charged battery pack at an ambient temperature of 77 degrees Fahrenheit, an E PZ 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS lens, picture quality set to Fine, Single-shot AF, shooting once every 30 seconds with the flash strobes once every two times, using the battery pack that is charged for an hour after the charge lamp goes out, and using a Sony Memory Stick PRO Duo. Unfortunately, there is no information regarding the use of Wi-Fi, however, Wi-Fi will decrease the battery life further.

two questions: 1. can one of the rear buttons be configured for focussing?
