Nikon 18.5mm f/1.8 overview

  • 1Description

Optimized to provide a normal 50mm equivalent field of view, the black 1 NIKKOR 18.5mm f/1.8 Lens from Nikon is designed to give the Nikon 1-series digital camera a natural perspective of the human eye. The ultra-fast maximum aperture of f/1.8 makes this lens a great choice for low-light photography, and when shot wide open, is capable of exceptionally shallow depth of field. Also, it utilizes one aspherical element to control distortion and aberrations and has a rear focusing AF system. The lens will focus as close as 7.9" and can use 40.5mm threaded filters. Additionally, it has a rounded 7-blade diaphragm for smooth other of focus elements.

Ultra-Fast Maximum Aperture
The speed of a lens describes its maximum aperture. The larger the aperture, the more light it lets in and, therefore, the faster the lens. At f/1.8 this lens's speed opens up new opportunities for low-light and high-speed shooting. When shooting at f/1.8, your photos and videos have extremely shallow depth of field, which means your subject will be in perfect focus, but the background will be softly blurred.
Provides a Normal Angle of View
Create photos and videos that mimic what you see with your eyes-both in perspective and brightness. From casual snapshots to creative close-ups, every image will be true to your memory of the moment.

    Nikon 18.5mm f/1.8 reviews

    1 NIKKOR 18.5mm f/1.8 Lens (Black) is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 79.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best lens in my set This is the third lens that I bought for my J1 (also own the VR 10-30 mm f/3.5-5.6 and the VR 30-110mm f/3.8-5.6). It expanded the capabilities of my set greatly. Because of it's high apperture you can get really shallow depth of field (compared to what you get with the other lenses) and a lot shorter exposure time in low light conditions without traidin in for higher ISO. Great for filming in super slow motion in conditions other than bright sun light and in low lit scenarios without using flash. Fixed focal length is a fair trade off. You can capture most scenes that would be suitable for a 10-30mm lens

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Small Wonder I'm a believer in prime lenses. Not exclusively, but as much as possible. This is a sharp fast lens. I use it on V1. It ought to be even better on the new V3. While the kit 10-30mm zoom is pretty good the image quality with the 18.5mm is noticeably better on a large monitor or better still if you print at 8x10. Auto focus is fast as in almost instantaneous. The 1.8 aperture lets you isolate the subject from the background better than the kit zoom. It isn't small enough to ley you put V1 in a shirt pocket but a jacket pocket works as will the side pockets on cargo pants.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful, fast lens This f/1.8 prime lens provides terrfic low-light performance, which coupled with the Nikon 1 autofocus system, yields great photos without flash under low ambient light conditions. The lens is very sharp from wide open up to f/8 or so after which diffraction limits the sharpness of smaller apertures to a certain extent. This lens gives significantly shallower depth of field than other current CX lenses, but with the 2.7 crop factor for the CX sensor (compared to full frame), it does not provide the kind of subject isolation offered by similar lenses with a full-frame sensor.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent and perfect match V1/J1 the 50mm equivalent field if view is my favourite; wherever you are, you can take two steps back and see a 35 EFOV with this lens, but it also allows you to take portraits (head and shoulders) which I find hard with a 35.This tiny Nikkor is razor sharp wide open, has a nice isolating effect if used wide open (and on the V1 you have that brilliant 1/16,000 electronic shutter, so you can shoot wide open in daylight), is very light, and it focusses light lightning. Excuse the cliche, but what's not to like? This lens live on my V1, and the 1030 zoom in a pocket for when you really need wide or long. The 18.5 is essential, IMHO.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Favorite lens for the Nikon 1 System I'm rating this lens as a 5 star due to the combination of price and performance that it delivers. It's a great buy and delivers low light performance, speed and if used properly, smooth bokeh. I pretty much use the lens wide open all of the time. At normal focus distances, and in good light the hit rate is near 100%, so the f/1.8 allows you to keep the ISO down and shutter speed up. The lens focus very close, and at close focus distances, you can generate some really nice out of focus backgrounds - you could *almost* use this lens as a macro. This is a stay-on-camera lens for me and I haven't used any of my other 1 system lenses since getting this one. It's a great buy for the 1 system. If you need this focal length, don't hesitate. It's a winner.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Good Lens for Some Situations I used Nikon prime lenses on all of my film cameras and remember the sharpness and shallow depth-of-field at wider apertures. Experiencing some of this again with this Nikon 1 prime lens sounded good. I tested sharpness by taking about 100 comparison shots with this lens and the 10-30 kit zoom set to 18mm. I didn't see much difference in side by side comparisons; 100% views did show a slight edge for the prime. For most of my shooting I don't think this lens will provide noticeably sharper images than my 10-30, 30-110, or 6.7-13 lenses. I also did some depth-of-field comparisons. The 18.5mm prime wide open does have less depth-of-field than the 10-30mm at 18mm and wide open. But the difference is not significant for subjects that are 10 feet or more distant. Some reviews mention the f/1.8 maximum aperture is useful for low light photography. The 18.5 is not a VR lens; my Nikon 1 zooms are all VR and gain 2-3 stops stability in low light. So, for static subjects in low light, the prime and the 10-30 zoom can be hand held down to the same low light level. The prime will have some advantage when shooting moving subjects (sports, kids, etc.) at low light but the real advantage will be in brighter light where the f/1.8 aperture allows a faster shutter speed to stop action. Mounting on a tripod puts the lens to best use. The lack of VR is no longer a problem and the apparent sharpness seems to improve. Nikon makes an unusual lens hood for this lens. The HB-N101 works well for me, costs less, and has a more conventional appearance. For me, this lens is best suited to taking portraits because the background is pleasantly out of focus. I also use it on a tripod for time lapse and low light photography. I'm keeping it and I enjoy it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good portrait and low light lens I haven't spent a lot of time with this lens yet, but so far so good. It's a much better low light lens than the kit 10-30mm lens that came with my Nikon J1. For a casual photographer, it's easy to get a nice bokeh effect that makes your portraits pop. I am used to using zoom lenses, so it's a little more difficult composing shots with this lens. However, overall I think it's a much better lens than the kit lens and if I could only have one, it would be this one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reminiscent of Standard 50mm Lenses I like using prime lenses sometimes although I'm not quite sure why. Maybe because it eliminates the indecision of what focal length to shoot with that often happens when using a zoom lens. Maybe it's because they're usually faster and optically better than zooms. In addition to the Nikkor 18.5mm 1.8 lens I also have the 10mm 2.8 which I also like very much. As other reviewers have noted the 18.5mm is excellent for shallow focus close up shots. It's also a good fast lens when shooting video. I also think it does very well as a portrait lens and the images could always be cropped down a bit to 70 - 75mm (35mm equivalent) for a good portrait shot without any real sacrifice in image quality at least for general picture taking purposes. Also, the on line purchasing experience from B&H was flawless with quick delivery as usual.
