Leica Vario-Elmar-S 30-90mm f/3.5 ASPH. Overview

The 30-90mm f/3.5-5.6 Vario-Elmar-S ASPH. Lens from Leica is a medium format zoom lens with a 35mm focal length equivalency of 24-72mm. For a medium format lens, it is particularly compact and lightweight offering high image quality across its versatile zoom range. It is the only zoom lens in the Leica S-system.

The optical design comprises 14 elements in 11 groups. Nine elements are made from glass with anomalous partial dispersion. Three low-dispersion fluoride elements correct chromatic aberrations. Two aspherical surfaces on the rear element and another on the front lens of the second group maintain consistent imaging performance and minimal distortion at shorter distances. At all focal lengths, the effects of vignetting are imperceptible.

Good but not great

I purchased the zoom lens for it's convenience. Having owned a Hasselblad and 50-110mm lens I had high hopes for the Leica. While it is convenient and for the most part sharp, anything that is out of focus, especially at the wide end of the zoom renders with a strange double image. I've heard someone else review the lens who says this is a characteristic of aspherical lenses. I had Leica examine the lens and while it was slightly improved, the double image effect in out of focus parts of the frame is still there, and in my opinion unacceptable for any lens costing this money, let alone a Leica.

Wow!

I am fairly new to the Leica S system. I was a little reluctant to purchase a zoom lens, since I was concerned that the image quality would not be up to Leica prime lens standards. Prior to this lens, I've been using the 45mm, 70mm and 120mm, which are all excellent. But with a motorcycle trip to Europe coming up and not being able to lug around the body and multiple lenses, I opted for the zoom. I just took it along on a motorcycle trip up the California coast. All I can say is WOW. It may not be quite as fast as the prime lenses. But the image quality is incredible. There is nothing sacrificed at all. And yes all the Leica magic dust is included too.

question

Is the 30-90/3.5-5.6 Vario-Elmar S ASPH lens weather sealed?
Asked by: Anonymous
Yes, I believe the Leica S 30-90 is weather sealed, as is the whole of the S system. Heather S from B&H staff's response is not correct! (B&H: please correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think so!)

question

The Leica website seems to be avoiding callng this lens a zoom lens ( Combines the flexibility of a zoom lens with the imaging performance of corresponding fixed focal lengths is their statement), although its nomenclature is vario . Does this lens differ from a true zoom in some way?
Asked by: Howard
The Vario-Elmar-S 30-90mm is a true zoom lens hence the classification as Vario . The statement you are referring to is Leica's referencing the image quality to that of prime lens which is not usually the norm in the photographic world. You can rest assure that if and when Leica produces zoom lenses, their goal is to match prime lens performance as close as possible and in most cases are difficult to discern the difference between them. When Leica uses multi focal length lenses that are not true zooms they refer to them as Tri-Elmars.The following is a link to the technical data sheet for the Vario-Elmar-S 30-90mm.https://us.leica-camera.com/Service-Support/Support/Downloads?category=76208&subcategory=76209&type=68377&language=93871
