Korg Krome 88 overview

  • 1Description

The black Krome 88-Key Music Workstation by Korg features a wide selection of sounds, including piano, electric piano, dynamic drum kits, 640 programs and 288 combinations. The 88-key Natural Weighted Hammer Action keyboard provides a feel and response ideal for any style of piano playing.

The Korg Krome has plentiful onboard sounds, including the "German D Grand" patch, which features 88 full-length unlooped stereo samples and damper resonance. The three types of electric pianos have eight velocity levels to ensure a faithful response to the nuances of your playing. Additionally, vintage amps, cabinets and effects have been modeled to add realism to your playing experience. Krome contains "Jazz Ambience Drums" which capture a dramatic realism by allowing you to adjust the balance between the direct sound and the ambient room sound. Krome also includes 640 programs or 288 combinations, each created by professional musicians to provide both clean backing parts and soaring solos. The Drum Track feature, with more than 600 preset patterns, also allows drum patterns to be created and used with the sequencer.

Krome features an onboard 16-track sequencer. The Auto Song Setup function starts recording immediately at the press of a button. Each Template Song assigns genre-appropriate sounds to sequencer tracks with pre-routed effects. Korg's Cue List enables quick arranging with Realtime Pattern/Play Recording. Any necessary edits or changes can be made using the convenient piano-roll editing.

Krome connects to your computer via USB to easily transfer MIDI data. An SD card slot is also available to help you manage Krome's data files. The Krome Editor and Krome Plug-In Editor allow you to edit your Krome settings from a computer and/or integrate it as a software synthesizer in your DAW.

    Korg Krome 88 reviews

Krome 88-Key Music Workstation (Black) is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! retired pro film composer I retired young as a result of surgery that did not go well, but I can still play (at about speed thus far). Prior to the Krome, I had a massive studio with about every keyboard and synth module known to the free world. A few years ago the studio was flooded, and pretty much destroyed. Since then, I've put together a much more modest studio in one of my homes. I was initially enamored of the Korg Kronus, but when I played the Krome, and discovered how wonderful it sounded, I went with that along with top-of-the-line reference speakers, etc. that make it AMAZING! I do all of my composing in logic Pro X on a maxed-out iMac 27. Between that and the Krome, I am able to produce symphonies that are comparable (or better) than with my old gear.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Shines in Some Aspects I am a professional keyboardist/pianist and vocalist, working mostly a single act, but occasionally put together a duo or trio. I purchased the Krome 88 with the hope that I could build preset combinations for a wide variety of songs for live performance. I do about 225 performances a year.High Points: Decent keyboard feel, but a little lighter than MOX8 and Roland Supernatural keyboards, which I've also owned. Nice touch screen with a great display, far fewer physical controls to dabble with. (MOX8 has over 100 knobs and buttons, Krome is less than half of that, but many are redundant with operations that are normally done on the touch screen. The flexibility to program an infinite combination of voicings, drums, and arps through a 16 channel onscreen mixer is wonderful.Low Points: While you have the ability to stack a lot of different sounds in a lot of different ways, it is the tones and the drum tracks that I find lacking. I had hoped to find something that would allow me to remove my Motif rack from my equipment box. Unfortunately, the Motif rack beats the Krome in almost every major category: EPs, NGSs, Brass, Harps, Vibes, etc, ties on Grand Pianos. In fact, there was not a single tone in the Krome that really caused me to gasp over the beauty of it's realism and timbre, much unlike my first impression of the Motif, as well as the MOX8.In Korg's defense, there are a couple of layers of equalization at the tone and at the effects levels where you can make the sounds thicker. My overall impression is that the voicings are shrill, even raspy. Whoever programmed the factory settings at the effects level didn't do the Korg Corporation any favors. The drum tracks are equally underwhelming, ugh! I have never seen a keyboard (even from the cheapest plastic portables) that has fewer usable patterns out of the box. Even switching drum kits can't save this lame collection of rhythms, sorry! Try to find a nice Bossa, or a full-sounding 16 beat, or a decent 6/8 pattern in 600+ provided...you'll be disappointed. The problem is that there are no simple building block patterns that can be used for a variety of songs. The patterns seem song-specific, and if you can't figure out what that song is, it may not work for you.My ultimate setup? What is great about this keyboard is that you can set a tone at zero volume, chose a MIDI out channel from that mixer channel, and run a decent tone generator like the Motif ES or EX for the main voices. There are user areas for additional drum tracks, and I hope to export tracks from my other keyboards into this area.I'll have the flexibility to use backup tones from the Krome, and some existing drum tracks that are usable, which only number maybe 10 or 12. Hopefully Krome will get the message and release a new, fuller, richer palate of sounds and drum patterns, or at least equalize the sound to eliminate the harshness. If you are looking to gig with this out of the box, good luck! I've spent over a month putting Combis together to cover my musical latitude, and have only about half of the usable groupings that I have with my Casio PX-320 and older Yamaha kedyboards. In short, execution and operation is great, content is weak. Nonetheless, its light weight, decent keyboard feel, and amazing flexibility make it a near perfect platform from which to run a number of external devices. The grand piano is sufficient for solo piano work and the ability to tailor some voices and load user drum patterns might eventually make it an all-in-one box I had hoped it would be.
