Outstanding digitization of 35mm slide

By Stephen

After working through a clunky install of the Silverfast software for Mac OS (no CD drive) this product excels at digitizing 35mm slides. Workflow as follows: 1. Scan into computer using Silverfast software utilizing max res (non-hdr) setting to create a 197MB .tif file. On my system, scan time and saving (to an external thunderbolt connected drive) takes approximately 3m10s at this setting. 2. Crop and color correct using Adobe RAW. 3. Remove dust and scratches in Photoshop then save as a 3-5MB .jpg file. My average production time for a full digitization/restoration is approximately 20min per slide. Given I have access to professional photo editing software through Adobe's CC suite, there is no need for me to use the additional features offered through Silverfast. I get the results I desire through the above listed workflow and find well exposed/focused slides from the 70's look like digital images that were captured yesterday. I have been able to recover an enormous amount of data from seriously blown out slides, but the final results don't quite yield that "captured yesterday" look.

Scanner is great. Software included isn't.

The scanner functions very well. I have scanned over 200 slides now with very good results. However, the SilverFast software package used to control the scanner is worthless as provided. It is a demo version which leaves unsightly watermarks on the scanned image. You have to purchase a license for $49 to get a working version of the SilverFast software. Fortunately, the actual scanner drivers are downloaded free of charge from Plustek. More fortunately, I already have PhotoShop Elements and it has the ability to import from the scanner. So, using PhotoShop Elements I can scan 35mm slides or negatives at up to 3200 dpi with ease. Bottom line: If you already have software that will import scans from the unit, this is a great little scanner that works well at a reasonable cost. If not, you will likely have to purchase the software for an additional $49 or get some other software to control the scanner. I would have given the scanner 4+ if the software was a working version. If I didn't already have PhotoShop, I would likely have sent the scanner back as I believe it should be sold in a completely working condition without the additional hidden cost gimmick.

Horrible software, build from 2 cds non speaking to each other, Apropriate for window 7,8 ...and XP... Surprised B&H carries the product even. Waste of money and time

Difficult to set up

Perhaps I'm spoiled working on Apple devices but I found it took days to set up and the quality was only so so. It's not terrible but I got better, more accurate vibrancy from taking pictures with my iPhone of my slides projecting on a wall.

Doesn't work properly

If you are a technical genius, this is the machine for you. I am not. I just wanted a way to load my slides onto my computer, plain and simple. My husband , who knows computers finally got it set up. However, the "quick scan does not work. The quick scan program does not load. I paid a lot of money for this and I couldn't be more disappointed. Apparently, I now have to deal with the manufacturer, not B&H. Be warned. Don't waste your hard earned money on this ! I've ordered tons of things from B&H and this is the first time I've been very unhappy.

Good scanner

Scanner setup and use is good with good results. Silverfast software that came with it is only fair with an instruction manual that is poor to non-existent. Scanner instructions are also poor.

THE SCAN WORKS WELL BUT THE HISTOGRAM DOESN'T WORK WELL. I TAKE ALL THE SCANNED PHOTOS TO APPLE'S PHOTOS PROGRAM WHICH I FIND WORKS WELL AND SIMPLY.

I have been using the scanner for the last 2 weeks and the quality is really impressive. It could be a little bit slow when you scan an image in high resolution, but the result are great. I'll recommend the Plustek OpticFilm 8100 to those who are looking to review old negatives with the hopes of jumping again to shoot 35mm. Enjoy!

question

I have several negatives from a panoramic camera. Can these be handled?
Asked by: Anonymous
The negative film tray can hold up to 6 frames. However, each frame is separate from the next frame. You would have to piece the frames together in post to converge the separate frames into 1 panoramic-size frame.

The OpticFilm 8100 Film Scanner is only compatible with 35mm slides and negatives. So unfortunately, it will not be compatible with 2.25 X 2.25 negatives.

I am looking to scanning old Kodak 35mm black and white negatives, mostly T-MAX AND Tri-X. Will be doing little or no color negatives or slides. It looks like scanners come in a range of prices/features. Any suggestions on the minimum I need for just blank and white scanning? Thanks
Asked by: Paul
Paul, the 8100 scanner would be great if you are scanning B/W. The main difference between the 8100 and the 8200i series scanners is that the 8100 does not have infrared dust and scratch removal. Infrared dust and scratch removal does not work with silver based B/W films like T-Max and Tri-X. So you wouldn't really be giving up any features buy purchasing the 8100 over the 8200i SE.

question

I've read through the spec's on the three different Plustek models, and I can't really tell the difference between the 8100, the 8200i Ai, and the 8200i SE. Can you tell me why one costs more or less than another?
Asked by: Anonymous
The difference between them is the included software and if it has the built-in infrared channel hardware with SilverFast iSRD for dust and scratch removal. The 8100 does not have the infrared hardware. The 8200 series has it. The software included with the scanners are: 8100 - Silverfast Multi-exposure (Good)8200iSE - SilverFast SE Plus 8 software (Better)8200i Ai - SilverFast Ai Studio 8 software (Best)
