Rokinon CV85M-C overview

  • 1Description

The Rokinon 85mm T1.5 Cine Lens for Canon EF produces a slightly telephoto angle-of-view on full-frame sensors. It features a very fast maximum aperture of T1.5 and an 8 blade iris, for shallow depth of field with attractive bokeh. The focus and aperture control rings are outfitted with industry standard gearing, which provides an interface for working with a traditional follow focus. The aperture control ring has also been "declicked", which facilitates smooth iris pulls.

The 85mm has a minimum focus distance of 3.6'. Internal focusing minimizes the effects of lens breathing, which insures a more consistent angle-of-view when adjusting focus. The lens is composed of 9 elements in 7 groups, including one aspherical element to reduce spherical aberrations. In addition, a multi-coated elements help improve light transmission.

    Rokinon CV85M-C reviews

85mm T1.5 Cine Lens for Canon EF is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 126.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Lens for great price! Pros:- Image quality from wide open- Bokeh- Handling- Construction quality- Value- Video useCons:- Image quality doesn't improve a lot stopping down the aperture- Hood not positive feeling, its made out of cheap plastic. (But again, look at the price!)- Focusing at 85mm f/1.4 is difficult- About 1/3rd stop darker than my other 85mm lensesBottom Line:Buy this lens now if you want a superb manual focus long portrait lens of modern design and don't want to empty your pocket book. It performs like a name brand 85mm f/1.4 at a fraction the price. You must be proficient with manual focus to use this lens at f/1.4 (or be willing to learn).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One lens you cant go wrong owning I bought this lens to shoot Video and Stills with my Canon 5d MKIII. Images from this lens are great. I looks at as many review of this lens I could find as there was not many. The manual adjustments on this lens are smooth and flow with just the right amount of resistance when adjusting the focus or aperture. My follow focus worked perfectly with no issues. This lens is an incredible buy for the money The lens has some weight to it and feels very solid there is nothing about this lens that makes it feel cheap. It is not a Canon or Zeisis Cine lens but it is money well spent for those who want long lasting quality on a budget. I will be purchasing the Rokina Cine lens line one at a time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The long cine lense for AF100/GH2, etc This lens is a must have for any filmmaker who wants to own his own kit. Coming from the micro 4/3 arena, it's really an awesome lens to have. Provides a nice long lens option with a great shallow depth of field when wide open. The cinema iris/focus make it a must-have for anyone who's serious about follow focus and smooth aperture changes. We chose to go with the Canon EF mount and then have a micro4/3 adapter based on the fact that we encounter Canon much more than any of the other mounts available for this lens. If you're budget is allowing you to buy two or three of the Rokinon cine's, make sure this is one of them.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Visually Delivers, Build Quality Lacks This lens is faster and offers more shallow depth of field than the EF Canon 85 f/1.8, and it's cheaper, but it (obviously) doesn't have auto-focus, so taking stills wide-open is nearly impossible - but you buy this lens to shoot video and for that purpose, it's a great budget lens. The iris is de-clicked, so you can do smooth iris pulls without that stuttering, giving away that you've opened up. Having the gearing on the bezel is also a cool feature. I would definitely recommend the purchase of this lens for video work on EF mount or even M4/3 cameras. One thing that surprised me however (and I've tested this on other Rokinon lenses to the same effect), the lens barrel kind of grinds audibly as you focus, the action is not perfectly smooth.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Bang for the Buck - Sharp even at 1.4- Manual Focus wasn't as hard as I had previously imagine (if you have a good eye) on a 5D Mark ii. On a GH4 with a digital viewfinder, it is even easier.- Best to use with Variable ND as even a indoor lite shot will get over exposed at 1.4- 1m minimum focusing distancing is a bit limiting but got around that with a cheap macro adapter- Can't say much about the quality of the newer version of the Rokinon 85 but this without the dual readings on the lens and being much cheaper is worth it imoOne con is the 72mm filter thread. But a cheap step up ring fixes this

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Outstanding for the bucks This Cine lens is great for those shooting films with DSLRs. It's lightweight, pretty sharp, with a great aperture that will help you face the most unfriendly lighting scenarios. But watch out for the mental health of your AC if you are shooting all the way open. Comparing the price and the picture quality with a canon equivalent, it's really worth having it on your lens package. I believe that a Photographer/Cinematographer should own their very basic package, which has to be versatile and affordable. For the stravaganzzas and utterly expensive lens, you can always relay on rentals. This lens falls into the first kind. Must Buy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great lens on the cheap I haven't gotten to use this on the job yet, but I love my Rokinon 35mm cine and this seems to be a great compliment to that. I'm eager to try it out on my C100 in an interview. Seems sharp edge to edge but I haven't peeped it yet. All in all, for the money you pay for the benefits this lens gives you (low light, click less aperture) it's a bargain, let's face it. The two things I'm not thrilled about are the cheap lens shade that feels like it could fall off in a run and gun situation (not that I'll be using the lens this way, but it feels loose) and the fact that it also seems a bit loose on the C100 mount. Hence, 1 star for general looseness.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Quality for a Bare-Bones Price As a cinema professional with 15 years in the business with almost 10 years behind the camera on film, television & commercials, I can say that the Rokinon Cine Prime series is an absolute godsend for the low-budget professional. Basically, what you're getting is something that performs to 90-95% of the Zeiss CP2 Super Speed series, but at 1/20th the cost. (Personally, I find the tack-sharp image quality of the Zeiss primes a bit cold and impersonal; the Rokinons imitate the organic softness of the Cooke S4 series very well.) Zeiss, Cooke & Angenieux, in my opinion, are like Ferrari or Mercedes-Benz: you pay a premium for the name and the associated mystique. Rokinon is like a top-end Lexus or Acura: 90-95% of the performance, but at a much more reasonable price. Unlike the high-end European cinema optics leaders, the Rokinon series are definitely not designed to last for 40 years of heavy field use. Their construction is much lighter and uses thinner aluminum than their European equivalents. The lens caps are the rigid plastic ones used in still lens than the durable polyvinyl caps used in cine lenses. The follow focus gears are plastic and will need to be watched for wear. Despite all this, these are priced so reasonably that even if you only get ten years' use out of one, by the time you've reached the operational lifespan of a single Zeiss lens, having replaced the Rokinon lenses four times will *still* mean you've saved 60% of the cost. Don't expect to be impressed by the manufacturer's packaging. It's very cheap. Be sure to check your lens for accuracy if you have it shipped. Beyond that, and beyond the lighter construction, I've been very happy with the images I've created. I have a feeling that if the Germans and the French aren't looking over their shoulders in apprehension, they will be soon. At this rate, the Koreans are eating their lunch.
