Benro S6 overview

  • 1Description

Weighing just 2.6 lb, the Benro S6 Video Head is a compact video head capable of supporting cameras weighing up to 13.2 lb. The posi-step counterbalance system has four settings of 0.0, 4.4, 9.9 and 13.2 lb. The S6 has 360° panning rotation and variable tilt drag for smooth camera moves. There are separate pan and tilt lock levers for locked-off shots.

The sliding quick release (QR) plate helps balance the camera, and the head comes with a safety lock for the QR plate. The S6 video head accepts 501PL compatible QR plates, making it easy to find spares or replacements.

The illuminated bubble level, with included CCR1220 battery, helps level the S6 in the dark. The adjustable pan handle can be mounted on either side of the S6 head using the built-in mounting rosettes. The S6 can be mounted onto ball adapters, tripods, and other camera supports via the 3/8"-16 threaded female receiver on the magnesium alloy flat base.

    Benro S6 reviews

S6 Video Head is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 33.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well Built, Good Value I was torn between this and the S4, but I'm glad spent the extra few bucks. The counterbalance works great (comes in handy when I have my 7D paired with a 70-200) and I like the thicker/telescoping handle compared to the one that comes with the S2/4. The illuminated bubble level wasn't much of a selling point for me and it still seems kind of silly, but I guess if you shoot in the dark a lot and don't want to carry an extra flashlight it could be very useful. Though the specs say the head only weighs 2.6 lbs, it's built solidly- no need to baby it. Motion is smooth, it looks really sharp, and the price is definitely right.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Suprise and Disapointment The being accustomed to Manfrotto heads, I was surprised at how smooth the Benro head was. The counterbalances are amazing for its price. (I use it with 60D WARNING REQUIRES A QUICK RELEASE PLATE WITH DSLRS!)What was not cool was the control labels falling off both sides of the tripod. I had a deadline to keep so returns were not and option. One was off when it came in the box the other fell off a week later. Annoying, but an easy fix with crazy glue. Details Benro, its all in the details! I like the head but I am watching to make sure nothing else fails.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great head for the price. I bought this head as camera support on a slider, and it works great. There's a 3-step counterbalance to keep the camera in control, and the tilt drag is smooth at all settings, with no dead spots. One thing that surprised me is the lack of any pan drag adjustment. There's a lock knob, but pan resistance is a single, relatively fast setting. It's not a dealbreaker for the way I use it, but it is something to be aware of. All in all this is a great head for the price, and I would recommend it as a second or third head, and for use on a jib or slider.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great video head and a great price. Fantastic video head! I originally tried the Benro S8 with my Sony mirrorless cameras: the NEX 5 and NEX 7 but it wasn't quite as smooth as I had hoped when going from dead-stop to moving. It's also twice the weight of the S6 (about 5lbs!). The Manfrotto 502HD is half the weight so the S8 was a little disappointing with just how much it weights. I think for heavier cameras and/or rigs, it's panning and tilting would be better suited for. I swapped it with this S6 video head and couldn't be more pleased! Saved a little cash and got a better product for my cameras. The panning is perfect for me so eventhough I lost the ability to adjust it's panning tension that the S8 offers, the default tension is just perfectttt for me. To the reviewer Jim who confused the pan lock for a tension dial when he said applying drag makes the head almost unusable ..this head doesn't have drag/tension control! What he's referring to is the drag/tension lock - it's either you have it unlocked to pan or locked. He was trying to slightly lock it to control it's tension which isn't going to work and why it wasn't smooth. The S6 is well built and uses the Manfrotto plates as others have mentioned if you want to swap them or buy specialized manfrotto plates from say smallrig. My only room for improvement would be to make the screw under the plate have a d-ring so the need for a coin with you wouldn't be needed to secure/tighten it. I use this for weddings and travel videos and it works out well on my tripod or monopod. I played with the Manfrotto video heads: 502HD and MVH500AH at BH's store and went with this instead as it's very similar, if not better, yes better I felt, especically when planning/tilting from a deadstop to moving, and highly recommend it. The S6 in my opinion is the best option if you want something between Manfrotto's MVH500 (Benro's S4 counterpart) and Manfrotto's 502HD (Benro's S8 counterpart) and ultimately which I love it. I also have the S4 which I purchased with their monopod kit which is great too for it's compact size and light weight if say traveling. If buying by itself, the price difference makes getting the S6 a better value as you get counter-balance, which is great if putting anything more than just the camera on it - say a slider or rig, and tilt tension control. The S4, tilting is either locked or unlocked, but just as smooth though. If I had to pick S4 or S6? The S6 as the price difference of $27 is very little for what you're gaining. If I travel with it and needed something smaller and less weight, the S4 should be more than fine. I also have Benro's S4 monopod as mentioned and can easily swap heads - something Manfrotto's Monopod doesn't let you do and it's $100 more - this was a deal break for me. If I had to choose between the S8 and the 502HD, I would probably go with the 502HD simply based on the weight being half. If you're in a studio, then the S8 as it's really almost good or equal as the 504HD! Lastly, the arm on the S4 and the S6 are using the newer rubber handle with the blue ring and not the plain foam handle you see in the stock photos.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Missing the panning tension adjustment I have a Manfrotto 502HD and it's great. The S6 is a decent head (and is slightly cheaper than the 502). I needed something that was smaller and lighter for a 2nd setup. I went with this one even though I knew that the resistance on the panning is not adjustable. Actually, the only thing I dislike about this head is the fact that you can't adjust the tension of the panning. Too bad indeed! The load balance adjustment is good. The tilt tension adjustment is good. It just needs the panning tension adjustment and it would be perfect for run and gun!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Benro did ok, still prefer Manfrotto at this price point. As a standalone head on a tripod I didn't care for this head. Pans are fine but never could get tilts that I can get on my Manfrotto MVH500AH. Also the locking mechanisms feel very weak. I put this on my slider and it stays there. I own it's older brother, the S8 which I love, not sure why there is such a quality drop with the S6. I do like the thicker handle which allows for length adjustment. Overall not bad but I'd look elsewhere for a pan and tilt head.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great low budget head I bought this head to replace the Manfrotto 502 head on my slider. This head is kind of like the old 501 with a better adjustment for tension. I like the extendable pan arm and the light-up bubble level. The release plate is the same spec as the Manfrotto so you can easily change between heads or other accessories. Overall a good head to start with and it has the pan and tilt locks on the correct side. (for a right-handed operator)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extremely smooth!! I bought 2 of these heads at the same time because I purchased a monopod of the same brand which I actually love, and now I think these heads are fantastic, really smooth pans and tilt operations, very light compared to another brand. I really did not expect this type of quality in such an inexpensive model. I'm very pleased!
