Drobo B1200i overview

  • 1Description

If you want to securely save data across multiple servers in a iSCSI SAN environment, the Drobo 27.6TB B1200i iSCI SAN Storage Enclosure (9 x 3TB HDD, 3 x 200GB SSD) is a powerful, 12-bay, easy-to-use means of doing so. This Drobo includes nine enterprise-class 3TB hard disk drives that have the fast SAS 6 Gbps interface as well as three 200GB solid state drives and that offer a total capacity of 27.6TB. Even with these drives, the enclosure's capacity can be constantly expanded because its twelve drive bays can hold SATA I or II, SAS, or SSD drives of up to 4TB apiece.

Built on the proven BeyondRAID technology, this Drobo delivers advanced capabilities such as thin provisioning and data-aware tiering, usually reserved for more expensive enterprise solutions. Thin-provisioning allows you to expand capacity by switching out one drive with another. Data-aware tiering is a technology that optimizes the use of Drobo SAN storage, depending on the kind of database needs that you have. It also allows you to use SAS, SATA, Solid State drives all in the same enclosure!

For business, this Drobo is designed to provide reliable and high performance storage to servers running business-critical applications such as back up, email, and server virtualization. Drobo B1200i connects seamlessly to your existing TCP/IP network and utilizes the industry-standard iSCSI protocol to provide simple, consolidated storage for your servers. This particular Drobo includes three Gigabit Ethernet ports for connecting to your network and one additional Gigabit port for out-of-band management.

BeyondRAID Technology
An iSCSI Drobo can hold up to 48TB of raw storage and beyond. To add capacity, simply insert a new hard drive or replace your smallest drive with a larger one, even when all drive bays are full. Unlike traditional RAID systems, the BeyondRAID technology in Drobo enables you to leverage different drive capacities, allowing for continuous expansion as larger drives become available. With Drobo, expansion is automatic, instantaneous, and access to data is always maintained.

Drobo can protect from single or dual drive failures and has a virtual hot spare capability - ensuring all drives are used at all times. BeyondRAID provides these enhancements over traditional RAID:

Thin Provisioning as a fundamental capability allows for infinite capacity expansion by just replacing a drive with a larger one

Instant Expansion occurs when a new, or larger, drive is inserted without any disruption in service

Mixed Drive Utilization allows you to insert any drive, of any size, or any type, and Drobo will optimally use it - check out our interactive Capacity Calculator

Automatic Protection Levels ensures the best algorithm is used to protect from drive failure depending on the number of drives that are inserted without any user configuration

Dual Disk Redundancy enhances BeyondRAID protection by guarding from multiple drive failures

Virtual Hot Spare utilizes all drives at all time - no drives sitting idle waiting for one to fail

•Drobos are Data Aware, intelligently handling data for added resiliency, performance, and management

Drive Re-ordering allows Drobo disk packs to be moved to another Drobo, and even re-ordered, while still functioning - try that with RAID
Data-Aware Tiering
Data-Aware Tiering SANs allow businesses to consolidate storage resources and share that storage across all connected servers and their applications. The reality is that different applications have different workloads. Transactional databases require different storage behavior than streaming media applications. Traditional storage has treated all workloads as equal, not optimizing for any of them.

The intelligence built into the Drobo model B1200i allows it to do Data-Aware Tiering, optimizing data layout and drive usage for "hot" requests. Providing faster access to frequently requested information will improve performance of Exchange, SQLServer, and other transactional applications that read and write lots of small data chunks.
iSCSI can be used to connect storage directly to servers using a high-speed connection, or it can be used to create a Storage Area Network (SAN) with to 2, 5, or 10 plus servers.

With an iSCSI SAN, centralized storage is provided to each server over a high-speed network and storage can be allocated or expanded instantaneously. Also, any single server does not tie up free space and there are fewer storage devices to maintain.
Multi-Host Connectivity
Have multiple servers that need storage? No problem. The Drobo 12-bay iSCSI SAN storage for Business connects seamlessly to your existing TCP/IP network and utilizes the industry-standard iSCSI protocol to provide simple, consolidated storage for your servers.
Up to 12 Disks of Instant Expansion to 36TB and Beyond
Grow your storage to meet your data capacity needs with minimal effort. To add capacity, simply insert a new hard drive or replace your smallest drive with a larger one, even when all twelve drive bays are full. Unlike traditional RAID systems, the BeyondRAID technology found on Drobo 12-bay iSCSI SAN storage for Business enables you to mix and match capacities, drive brands and speeds. This allows for continuous expansion as drive capacities grow. With Drobo, expansion is automatic, instantaneous and access to data is always maintained.
This Drobo can provide a dedicated iSCSI SAN for business-critical applications and server virtualization. As such, it delivers high performance, reliability, and security. Volumes created on a Drobo are assigned to a server, resulting in the server thinking it has locally attached storage.
Simplify Your VMware Environment
Storage is an integral part of a successful virtualization strategy. Drobo has been tested for use with VMware to eliminate risk from your storage decision and help accelerate deployment of your virtual server environment.
Optimizing Business Applications
Like with business applications, Drobo is ideal for building your first server virtualization cluster and had been certified for VMware vSphere and Citrix Xen Server environments. Drobo is also a cost-effective way to provide reliable storage for your backup server and has been certified for use with Symantec Backup Exec.
Drobo Care Service and Support Program
The Drobo Care service and support program extends your peace of mind beyond the standard warranty terms for 3 years and beyond. With DroboCare, we're always here to answer your call and if something happens to go wrong, we'll send you a replacement Drobo right away.
No Headache Dual-Drive Redundancy
Enable the dual-drive redundancy option to protect against the simultaneous failure of up to two hard drives. It's all done with a single click, without ever losing access to your data. Running out of space? You can click to switch back to single drive redundancy. Unlike moving between traditional RAID 5 and RAID 6, there's no need to reformat or migrate data off of the array, potentially saving you hours or days of downtime.
Dual High-Speed iSCSI Interfaces
Unfamiliar with iSCSI? It's an industry- standard, high performance protocol that has become extremely popular with businesses and individuals who demand high data storage throughput, but it can often be complex to manage. DroboElite changes that by introducing zero- click iSCSI connection creation with optional LUN-level CHAP authentication for both Windows and Mac OS X.
The Virtues of Smart Volumes
Create new volumes in seconds and manage up to 255 x 16TB volumes over time with ease. The innovative and timesaving Smart Volume management technology integrated into this Drobo allows volumes to pull storage from the common pool of drives rather than a specific physical drive allocation, eliminating the need to manage capacity at the volume level. Smart Volumes are also data aware, allowing deleted data blocks to be returned to the common pool and ensuring that volumes remain as efficient as possible over time.
