Bolt DR PP-400DR overview

  • 1Description

The Cyclone DR PP-400DR Dual Outlet Power Pack from Bolt features dual plugs for powering 2 flashes at the same time. It works with most on-camera flash units with high-voltage (HV) connections, including those from Nikon, Canon, Sony, Bolt, Sunpak, Quantum, Vivitar, and Metz (cables required and sold separately). The pack has a fast recycle time of approximately 1 sec and provides up to 1400 full-power flashes, depending on the flash and settings used. The Cyclone DR's flash cable ports can be locked once the cable is attached, making the connection extra secure. The unit weighs a mere 1.2 lb.

The power pack's microcontroller unit prevents overheating via integrated software and hardware protection. The included PP-400BP Cyclone DR Battery Pack is removable, allowing you to charge it while powering the Cyclone power pack with a second identical battery (sold separately). Also supplied is a 2-prong 100-240 VAC charger for worldwide use. Four LED's indicate remaining battery charge; one light on means 25% or lower, two lights mean 25-50%, three mean 50-75%, and all four mean 75% or higher. Additionally, the Cyclone DR comes with an adjustable neoprene shoulder strap that has a non-slip rubber underside and a quick-release buckle. It attaches to the strap lug on the power pack. The Cyclone also features a built-in belt clip, as well as two rubberized feet for stability.

    Bolt DR PP-400DR reviews

Cyclone DR PP-400DR Dual Outlet Power Pack is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 49.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Battery Pack Problem I purchased a similar battery pack, same manufacturer but different brand stamp, and had problems. Good: fast recycle times, power, ease of use Bad: automatically shut off while using, died while using I was using the battery pack at several shoots, and expected a fully charged battery pack to be on supplying power to my Nikon speedlights. When I needed the flash, there was no power. The battery shut off without warning. I returned the pack in exchange for a new one. Same problem. I replaced the cable...turns out I had a bad cable. Now, it seems like there is no power being supplied to the speedlights...really? Yes, because my speedlight batteries are going dead after using this battery pack.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works as advertise I just picked this up and found that is a great addition to my camera. The unit so far works great and after 500 flash on auto TTL mode the battery is still full. I can't wait to use this for a wedding where my standard external AA battery pack would run out of juice when you need it most. I'm hoping this unit would resolve this. Plus about the unit is that you can buy a backup battery and charge the other battery without the need of the main circuitry portion on top. The only minus is that the unit is kinda big on the hip. But I'm willing to deal with that over AA batteries.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from The Jury is Still Out I'm a professional photographer who purchased the Bolt Cyclone DR PP-400DR at the end of January. I liked all of the positive reviews regarding this battery pack, specifically, the long run time without recharging. To be fair, I waited to review this product until I had used it several times. Three weeks ago, I shot a wedding on a Saturday, and another the next day. The first wedding went off without a hitch, and the Bolt battery pack worked perfectly. After shooting on Saturday, I recharged the battery for Sunday's wedding. On Sunday during the wedding shoot, the battery pack shut itself off a couple of times while in use (not a good thing when the bride is walking in), and at one point during the wedding, the battery pack went completely dead. This surprised me because it was only in use for three hours intermittently and the meter showed that it was fully charged when I checked it moments before. I quickly plugged in the charger, and within one minute, the battery revived itself and showed that it was again fully charged. Prior to these weddings, I had tested the battery several times and noticed that on occasion, although fully charged one day, the battery wouldn't show any charge on the next day. Indeed, it wouldn't even turn on. This was again quickly rectified when I plugged it in for one or two minutes, at which point, the battery again showed that it was fully charged. It seems as if the memory on this battery has to be refreshed on occasion by plugging it in for a moment. Because of this, I'm not sure that I can trust this unit yet. I do like the light weight of this battery, and the recharge time, overall, is pretty quick. When working properly, the battery does have a long run time. The quality of this unit is decent (made in China), but not outstanding. For me, some additional testing will be needed before I can recommend this battery pack.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love it Have all ways wanted a rechargeable pack for my Canon Flashes. This one could get you in trouble though as it will fire the flash enough times in a short period to cause a meltdown. The pack is rugged and well built which is a plus for me as my work is outside most of the time. The cords that are required for to connect to your flash is well built but expensive. Being that it will power 2 flashes then you need 2 cords which will run you almost 100 dollars. All in all I am very happy with the unit and would recommened it to anyone that does work with speedlites outdoors and needs strong portability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome, just plain awesome! So much easier than changing AAs every 20-30 minutes at a wedding reception. I haven't used it with two flashes at the same time, but I can for sure tell you I have no idea when I'm ever going to run out of power! 4 hours of reception photos and still had 4/4 on the battery life! I also got it on sale, so the price for me was great! Not a must-have, but I don't think I'll ever shoot another wedding without it!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Cable Problems Unsufficient strain relief at speedlight connection. Had to order a second cable due to breakage at speedlight end. Better to make cable slightly longer and improve strain relief.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lots of Juice I shot many photos and I havent recharged it. I can charge my iPhone with the usb adapter. This would be a great solution for long shoots and if you use something like the camranger. You have a portable charging station. I can also use this with my nikon SB-910 with the correct cable. This will be great when I want TTL and HSS. While the Bolt VB-22 can do HSS it would use the speedlight when I'm doing events.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cyclone power pack This power pack is great. I use it to power my nikon 910 flash. It allows me to shoot in burst mode with the flash. The power pack fits nicely on my belt type camera holder It is very well built and I like the way that the battery part is removable from the power pack.
