Westcott 2223 overview

  • 1Description

Designed by adventure photographer Bruce Dorn, the Triple Threat Speedlite Bracket from Westcott allows you to gang 3 lightweight shoe mount flashes for use in a softbox or umbrella. Most speedlites in this category output about 60W/s, but with the Triple Threat you now have an approximately 180W/s flash with the power of a small studio head and TTL options depending on your choice of flash.

The Triple Threat is made of lightweight but durable polymer with metal shoes with knurled locking knobs. The center hole is made for all standard umbrella shafts or you can use the 1/4"-20 tap to secure it to a bracket or other type of compatible gear.

External Speedlite Solution
The Triple Threat provides photographers the ability to increase their light output without having to carry around big, heavy strobes
3 Speedlites, 1 Bracket
The Triple Threat will mount 3 speedlites to one simple, small bracket
Made for the Photographers on the Go

    Westcott 2223 reviews

Triple Threat Speedlite Bracket is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 26.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Triple Threat Review Obviously this device is effective at mounting three strobes to either a light stand, or onto an umbrella shaft. However, if you are using the shaft approach, this unit, once three strobes are attached, is really too heavy since most umbrella shafts barely offer enough strength manage the umbrella! I don't know about you, but putting $1,500 dollars worth of strobes onto such a flimsly rod makes me nervous! In fact, to effectively tighten the locking knob it will crimp all but the most robust shafts! Choose one that's made of solid fiberglass! Using the thread mounting options you'll experience no such problems. Use some caution, and common sense on this one.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Weak plastic build Overall good design, but the components aren't ideal for three flashes. The brass nut is only surrounded by the plastic housing so on you add a decent sized umbrella, it just won't stay in position. That's something to think about when you put three $$flashes on that thing, it's a lot to think about...My first use I couldn't get the umbrella and flashes to line up with my subjects without gravity pulling it wherever it wanted and two of the flashes fell out of the clips, crashing on rocks. I knew we were shooting in rough terrain, and tightened them best I could, but they still came loose...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Companion to Westcott 7' Umbrellas The problem with the Westcott 7' umbrellas is that they're rather heavy and don't balance well on portable light stands. This bracket allows me to feed the umbrella shaft through and beyond the bracket atop the stand. I can attach one or more speedlites to the bracket and slide the umbrella/flashes back and forth along the shaft to balance the combination directly over the stand. My only downgrading is due to the small knobs that secure this bracket to the umbrella shaft. I think they should be much larger so that the bracket can be tightened better more securely to the end of the umbrella shaft.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not a Practical Mount I purchased this item, because I have spent a very long time trying to locate an iDC triple Threat bracket. This is same design and iDC's site refers you to this model as a replacement to their discontinued product. The idea is the same, the design is roughly the same; however, the actual result is not. The body is cheap polymer and while that keeps the price down, it makes the product unreliable. It comes with two different size female ends which worked well for me. The problem is the polymer is so soft the fittings spin inside of it. I had to almost break it to get it off my stand! I use Canon 600EX Speedlites and the opportunities something like this offers is great for increasing the light with soft boxes, umbrellas, and etc. But the flimsy construction makes me worried every time I put 3 flashes on it. Now I'm having to look around for a better option. I would save the money and avoid this product altogether.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I love it, but... I bought the triple threat from B&H several months ago. Time from order to in my hands was swift as always. I use the triple threat in conjunction with Yongnuo YN600EX-RT Speedlites and my Westcott 43 Apollo Orb and other modifiers. The cold shoe brackets can be tightened sufficiently to keep the Speedlites in place no matter what angle you tilt the bracket at. Functionally, the Triple Threat does what you need it to do, hold 3 Speedlites in place, mount to a stand and hold an umbrella or other modifier in place. If you need the bracket to tilt, you need to buy something like the Impact swivel umbrella adapter to place between the stand and the triple threat. My big issue is with build quality. The plastic triangle that holds the cold shoes can separate at the seam quite easily since it is not a single piece of molded plastic. After mine separated, I put it back together, and hold it that way with 3 sets of nuts and bolts. I recommend the Triple Threat, but be aware of the build quality. I would pay a few more dollars for a single piece of plastic or for extra bracing to guard against separation. You can see how I modified it in the attached photo.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good, but not a perfect solution. This product works as intended, it creates the ability to use a multiple Speedlite array for use in a soft box or outdoors to match midday sun. I was nervous about my 580exII falling off of the clamp, but it seemed to hold well enough. I would imagine that if you moved your light stand around a bit, you should recheck for tightness, which could be inconvenient if you have them mounted inside of a soft box. I wish that the screw downs had a wing nut design instead of a notched screw. The other drawback is that when you attach this bracket to a light stand, there is absolutely no ability to tilt your bracket. I suppose that using a boom would eliminate this issue, but sometimes you don't want to lug around extra equipment and sand bags. Also, with the weight of 3 Speedlites and a soft box, you would need a very heavy duty boom.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not fit for purpose While all my other Westcott product purchases have been superb, this one is not. Made of plastic, it cannot handle the weight of a large umbrella and when used in any sort of wind the brass nut recessed into the bracket( into which you screw your stand), spins in its mount. I'm fairly certain it will detach completely and with 3 speedlites attached that could be an expensive breakdown.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not thrilled Can be mounted directly on Umbrella shaft or directly attached to light stand or boom arm ( my favorite choice), The shoes are a little tricky to secure the flash to. (Canon 600EX-RT)Twice have I dropped flash units thinking that I had secured them only to find out that I didn't have them fastened properly. Thankfully; the Orb caught them.
