Sigma 35mm f/1.4 overview

  • 1Description

An optically advanced wide-angle prime, the Canon EF 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens from Sigma mixes a comfortable focal length with an especially fast design. The bright f/1.4 maximum aperture helps to achieve shallow depth of field and selective focus effects, and also suits working in difficult lighting conditions. The optical layout incorporates both low dispersion and aspherical elements, which help to improve sharpness and clarity by controlling both spherical and chromatic aberrations. A floating elements system is also used to maintain performance throughout the focusing range. A Super Multi-Layer Coating is also featured, and helps to minimize flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.

Complementing the imaging capabilities, the lens sports a Hyper Sonic Motor to produce quick, smooth, and quiet autofocus performance with full-time manual focus override. The physical design features a brass bayonet mount, which offers rigidity and mounting precision along with a seal to guard against dust and moisture. Additionally, a rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.
Wide-angle prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras, however is also suitable for APS-C models where it provides a 56mm equivalent focal length.
Impressively bright f/1.4 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in low-light conditions and also provides greater control over the focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.
One F Low Dispersion (FLD) element and four Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements are featured in the optical design, and help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy.
Two aspherical elements are used to help limit distortion and spherical aberrations and also contributes to greater overall sharpness and accurate rendering.
Floating elements system helps to realize consistent optical performance throughout the focusing range, from 11.8" to infinity.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocusing, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability. Additionally, rubber sealing is incorporated in the mount design to render it dust- and splash-resistant.
This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

Sigma 35mm f/1.4 reviews

35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens for Canon EF is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 402.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than the Canon 35L I have owned many Sigma lenses that I never seem to keep them because they are always lacking in one way or another. Not this lens its actually better than the Canon 35L it competes with and it cost less as a bonus. I am excited because if this is the quality that the NEW Sigma will produce I will be buying more of their products. Build quality is tops too, only wish it had weather sealing but for the price I can over look this its not a deal breaker. I also got the Sigma dock so I can do firmware updates/adjust the lens to my liking. This is something no other lens manufacture currently has and it's a BIG Plus!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great 35 mm prime lens by Sigma. Bought this lens made by Sigma based on other reviews and positive experience with Sigma lenses (50 mm EX f/1.4 and 70 mm EX f/2.8 macro lens). Lucky enough to purchase it here on B&H while in stock and partnered with their recommended 67 mm circular polarizer filter made by Hoya. I can say that this lens is tack sharp and has quick auto focusing. Great substitute for the Canon 35 mm 1.4 L for those who want more bang for their money. And Sigma's unbeatable 4 year warranty is another plus. Really solid and well balanced lens (with a Canon 5D II) with tight tolerance that feels and looks great. I can see many wedding photographers using this lens soon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sigma TOTALLY surprised me! Ok, I will admit it. I only use L series lenses on my Canon. After doing a tremendous amount of research on Canon's version, I continuously saw praises for Sigma's 35. Huh? What? Sigma? Really? Was I seeing things correctly? Photographers were stating it was just as good, if not better. Loving the price, I decided to give it a try and I could not be happier. It is so incredibly fast and sharp. Like super sharp. The bokeh is beyond words when used at 1.4. It is so amazing, my L series lenses are barely getting used. So the moral of my story, if you are considering a 35mm, don't be a lens brand snob like I almost was. Sigma's Art Series has totally won me over!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First Canon lens I recently switched from Nikon to Canon and decided to purchase this lens as my first Canon lens. I was a little worried since this is my first Pro lens purchase but now after using it for a few weeks, I have no regrets. The bokeh is smooth and buttery. Performance in low light is stunning. Focus is super quiet, precise, and fast. Even the heftiness of the lens, which I was a bit worried about, isn't too bad and I find I actually enjoy the slight heftiness that the lens has. Although I might be biased since this is my first pro lens purchase, I would say this is definitely worth the investment and will completely up your photography game.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful, fast, significant I used Canon's 35 f/1.4 for 2 years before selling it for the sigma version. Physically, the lens feels very significant. The body and focus ring are solid and aesthetically magical to the eye. The included lens hood is the same texture as the lens so it looks permanently attached, instead of the plastic vs metal that Canon uses. Focusing is just as fast as the Canon version and my Sigma copy is sharper than my Canon copy. I shoot mainly weddings so I use this lens in both good light and bad light. Focus in the dark is not a problem, especially on the 5dmk3. Colors are a little different, but not a deal breaker since it's adjustable in post. Overall, a gorgeous lens that's fast, sharp, and cheap!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from SIMPLE AMZING I just love this lens on my 5Dmk3, no AF issues. Although I don't use it for video work. But I'm sure I could. love the sharpness even wide open at f1.4 Great. just watch the depth of field at five feet or closer it is very shallow. i couldn't see any real or added distortion when using for 3/4 or full body portraiture. color output is nice clean and crisp. Build is through the roof. Matching Canon L. AF is as fast as Canon L, just a tad bit slower in low light. but not noticable. If you are using for stills sell what you need too to obtain this lens, you will not regret it. but video I don't have sufficient experince to speak of. I love this lens so much, I'm getting ready to sell two of my Canon L for the new 120-300 f2.8.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens for Photo/Journalism I just purchased this beauty for newspaper work and some photo shoots. I used it to shoot a pancake breakfast yesterday and it was fast and sharp with just enough bokeh to make it interesting. I also used it for a Christmas night seen in our downtown area and it pulled in this wonderful glowing sky on my Canon 5D that we put it on the front page. I am guessing it will take time to use such a powerful piece of glass because I was shooting a 24 mm, 2.8 on my Canon 20D and that was the work horse. I'm hoping that I won't need a flash much with this. The lens body is solid but the hood and lens cover seem a little flimsy.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Wanted to love it but returned it for the Canon 35mm 1.4L ii As a professional wedding photographer, I wanted to love this lens. And for the price, they've done a great job with it. However, after shooting 3 sessions with it, I returned it and bought the Canon 35mm 1.4L ii. The purple fringing with the Sigma was more than I could put up with, and it had difficultly focusing in low-ish light that the Canon handles just fine. The Canon is also much sharper. If you're just starting out or don't think you'd use it often, I think it's a great choice. But I'll most likely be spending 90% of a wedding day with this on one of my camera bodies. I've been shooting with the Canon now for a couple of weeks, and the price difference was worth it to me!
