Oben AC-1451 Tripod with PD-117 Pan/Tilt Head Overview

The AC-1451 4-Section Aluminum Tripod with PD-117 Pan/Tilt Head from Oben is an ideal tripod head combo for photographers looking for individual control on all axes. The sturdy 4-section aluminum legs can hold a camera or camcorder up to 13.2 lb, and will extend up to 68.3".

The legs are non-rotating, and have flip locks on each leg to adjust the height of the tripod. Each leg is independently adjustable, and they can be locked securely at three different angles. The tripod's feet feature rubber tips which are great for shooting on slippery or hard surfaces.

The center column features a twist lock that frees up its extension and retraction. For protection when it's retracted quickly, there's a rubber damper that protects the center-post collar. At the bottom of the center column is a spring-loaded ballast hook that allows you to attach a counterweight for extra stability. The detachable hook doubles as a stopper for the center column, which can be removed and reversed for low-angle shooting.

The PD-117 head allows independent camera adjustment on the horizontal and vertical planes as well as 360° panning. Two locking handles control the front-to-back and side-to-side tilt, and a thumb screw locks and unlocks the panning motion.

The quick release system includes an RP-20 plate with a video pin, and a safety lock on the release lever, preventing accidental release of the camera. Two bull's eye levels, and three tubular levels ensure your camera will be level on both the horizontal and vertical axes.

This tripod also includes a fitted, padded carry case with a removable shoulder strap, two heavy-duty zippers, and an interior zipper pocket. A tool clip with two hex wrenches for adjusting the center column and the leg joints is also included. It snaps onto any of the tripod legs for easy access.

Center column can be separated into 2 parts to give you a short column for low angle and macro work
Center column is grooved to prevent rotation

Leg cushions on 2 legs provide a firm grip in cold or wet weather
Tripod features reversible 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 screw to fit almost any head
Angle adjustment locks keep legs at the chosen angles
Angled rubber feet for maximum contact with the ground
Two included Allen keys attach to a tripod leg, so you're always ready to tighten components
Padded carry bag provides a snug fit for the tripod/head combination and features two heavy-duty zippers, an interior pocket with a zipper, and a shoulder strap

I have two other Oben tripods and wanted one with the Pan Tilt Head.  After reading the other reviews I was skeptical, but I purchase one anyway.  One of my big concerns was you had to disassemble it to put it in the storage bag…. NOT TRUE.  I had no problem putting the fully assembled tripod in the bag for transport.  I do like the legs compared to my other two that only have three sections this one has four which makes it more flexible for my workflow.  I would purchase another if the need arises.

Great tripod... Head could be better

The tripod itself, the Oben AC-1451 4-Section Aluminum Tripod, is excellent. Good engineering, great feel, not too heavy, and very stable, especially with the option to add weight to the hook. The PD-117 head though has left me a bit, not too much, but a bit disappointed. The tilt is not as smooth as the pan. I use this for my binoculars as well as my DSLR to watch/shoot birds in my backyard. The pan works great when I am watching birds fly horizontally by. But when some birds take off and fly upwards, the tilt is jerky and I miss my shot or lose sight of the bird from the binoculars. Hopefully this is a 'new' equipment thing - and things will become smoother with use. May update rating and review then. Nevertheless, a solid 4/5 stars for this.

As new comers to the video photography world, we are enjoying this tripod very much! Inexpensive, intuitive, strong and fairly light-weight. Overall a very good purchase.

More plastic than not, but sturdy and strong.

The leg adjuster clamps are plastic, curious to see how well they hold up . Can not fault the XYZ azimuth adjustability. Scope clamp is sturdy and robust.

So much wrong with this tripod. The biggest issue I had was that one of the legs broke the first time I extended them a little too quickly, maybe a week or two after buying. A tiny black plastic piece came flying out but I never found it. The swivel head also comes loose easily and the quick release plate does not securely fit against my camera, making it a little wobbly. Overall the worst tripod I've ever bought. Customer service offered a replacement but wanted me to pay for shipping. No thanks, I'll just switch brands.

it's not bad

nice features; the tripod is pretty stable; the locks are decent; there was a little slop in the head that I couldn't lock down

I have a PD-117 head on this tripod and can't get it to come off. Do I need the small Allen wrenches to get the head off so I can put on a different head?
Asked by: Free
One does not need to use Allen wrenches to remove the PD-117 head. To remove the head from the legs, it is very important that the "panning" feature of the head be locked. Then the bottom section of the head is able to rotate and separate counterclockwise. If the head will not separate, than using a wide wrench attached to the base of the head will help to loosen the head and help to separate the head from the center column circular base.

question

I have this tripod and notice that the tube is threaded on the inside. I'm guessing that this is to add an attachment like a sandbag or weight system? Is there an item from Oben or another that would use these threads?
Asked by: Michael
The threading on the center column is to add counterweights/hooks.
