Synology DX513 overview

  • 1Description

The DiskStation DX513 5-Bay Expansion Unit from Synology delivers an effortless solution for volume expansion and data backup for selected Synology DiskStation models. It seamlessly scales up the storage capacity of your DiskStation by adding 5 hard drives on the fly when connected directly to an expansion cable.

Volume Expansion & Backup
The DiskStation DX513 provides you an easy way to immediately scale capacity by adding 5 hard drives on your Synology DiskStation when you are running out of hard drive capacity. You can expand the RAID volume on your Synology DiskStation directly without having to reformat the existing hard drives and ensure that your DiskStation continues its service during the capacity expansion. It can also be used as a dedicated local backup solution for your Synology DiskStation. When created as a separate volume, it provides a great backup solution to the local hard disks in case of system failure
Reliable Plug-and-Use Design
You can connect it to your Synology DiskStation using an expansion cable with custom-designed connectors on both ends, ensuring a reliable connection and maximum throughput. The 3.0 Gb/s connection speed allows the hard drives connected in it to operate as the internal ones of Synology DiskStation
Green & Easy to Manage
Its deep sleep mode can be manually configured to take effect automatically when the system has been inactive for a period of time. This not only saves energy but also extends the lifespan of the hard disk. Furthermore, the DiskStation DX513 can automatically power on/off when paired with selected DiskStation models, so the system runs intelligently and efficiently without your intervention
It supports Synology DiskStation DS1815+, DS1813+, DS1812+, DS1515+, DS1515, DS1513+, DS1512+, DS1511+, DS1010+, DS715, DS713+, DS712+, and DS710+

    Synology DX513 reviews

DiskStation DX513 5-Bay Expansion Unit is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 24.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful purchase experience I purchased a DX513 expansion unit for my Synology DS1511+. My DS1511+ Volume crashed and I had to purchase this item in order to copy off my data. Synology support was worthless and couldn't recover the volume but did manage to allow Read-only access to the data. This item saved my bacon. I am still in recovery and have been working on: backup, data scrubbing, parity checking on both the DX513 and now on the DS1511+ after Removing the Volume and recreating. The data scrubbing takes about 30-hours for each unit (DS and DX), plus the copying of data which is very slow even though the two devices are connected at the hip. You'd think these processes would be quicker. The B&H experience was great: best price, quick delivery, great communication all along the way. No hidden gotchas. Things that are not so good? Synology having to way to recover a Crashed Volume. This is actually unbelievable in light of the fact that the degraded volume repaired, displayed as normal, the log showed bad sectors on Disk 1 and 4 in an SHR Raid array but fully repaired. Synology support remoted into my system and said, sucks to be you. Ah, dah! Actually sucks to have an unrecoverable crashed volume which is precisely the reason I opted to purchase a high-end NAS solution from Synology. I am still in shock relative to Synology's failed support effort.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Arrived on time I am usinig with 1812+. As soon as I connected it is working fine. The cable is very small and it is hard to connect between different shelves. Hope they will give long cable in future

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Storage Expansion added this to my Synology DS716+. Plug and play no problems. Stupid simple in fact. Ok it takes a while for the DSM to integrate the new drives into raid. Two 6TB drives took 22.5 hours to load up - so beware you are going to lose your NAS for a day or two when you install it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Highly Recommended Connected to a DS1513+ to expand my backup capacity. A totally seamless process: installed hard drives into the DX513, attached to the DS1513+, plug and play. No negatives yet, I doubt that I will find any.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Super Expansion Capability - Nice :) I purchased this to expand my Synology DS1513+ NAS. Setup and installation is easy and straightforward. The unit is nice and quiet and the performance is exceptional. I'd buy another in an instant and would highly recommend this unit if you want to add additional volumes to your Synology NAS. I'd give it 5 stars except for the fact that its front bezel has a glossy finish rather than a matte one, as shown in the online pics. This is minor point, but it doesn't match my DS1513+ :(

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love Synology! I've had the 1010 since 2010 and quickly filled it up. The expansion unit was the next step. I'm a professional photographer and wanted a system I could save my work to that would back up and save quickly and easily. These are the best units I've seen on any market. I've had drives fail and need only to pull the bad drive and install a new one. Done, nothing lost and it's back up and working perfectly. Happy camper!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent add-on to DS214Play DS214Play only has two bays. Wanted to add an additional RAID10 volume. The eSATA cable has locking screws on each end that screw in to the DS and the back of the DX; preventing accidental disconnection. With the RAID10 configured with 4 drives as a volume, the 5th drive as a volume (which is being used as the Synology backup volume). Highly recommend this as an add-on to a DS.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect This just what I needed. I'm a professional photographer and I filled up the first five drives in short order! This will bring my network storage up to 20 TB and I hope hold me over for another two or three years! The unit just sets up as another drive and will be controlled by the original Synology drive. Everything works flawlessly.
