Acratech GP-ss Ballhead With Lever Clamp
Key Features
  • Supports 25 lb / 11.3 kg
  • Gimbal Head Feature
  • Reduced Base Diameter for Travel Tripods
  • Lever Quick Release for Arca Style
The Acratech GP-ss Ballhead With Lever Clamp has the ability to function as a gimbal head and as a panoramic head, providing you with incredible positioning flexibility and stability for your equipment. Gimbal heads are desirable when shooting with telephoto lenses, especially when following moving objects. Rather than a rubber knob, this model features a locking lever for securing the Arca Swiss-style clamp that constitutes the quick-release element.

The GP-ss Ballhead is designed with a small diameter base of 2.08" to allow it to be used with travel-type tripods where the legs fold around the tripod head. The smaller base diameter allows the tripod legs to fold more compactly.

Even when using your tripod on rocky, uneven terrain the GP-ss Ballhead allows you to pan parallel to the horizon, eliminating the need to carry a separate leveling base to create accurate panoramic images.

Acratech GP-ss with Lever Reviews

Great Ball Head-If you know what you are doing

This is a great ball head, but you have to know how to use it. You lose the camera by trying to force the lever AFTER tightening the tension. It's counter intuitive. Final tightening should be done prior to flipping the lever lock, otherwise the lever lock will not engage.

Great ball head. Well-made. Works perfectly. A good value. Made in USA.

Only just started using it.

It's small. It's very light. And it works very smoothly. I'm using it with a Sony A7Riv and a 100-400 zoom. The Acratech GP-ss handles that with ease in my early testing. I expect that it will do very well in the field, but current circumstances have limited my chances to use it the way I want to.

Great ballhead until the tension knob loosens itself

Have used this ballhead for over a year. The tension knob kept loosening itself. No big deal until one day it drops the camera into a lake. Now praying that a week in a rice tub saves my camera an lens...

Overall very nice. Movement of ball coyld be a little smoother but it is a very minor detail. Really have to be picky to find issues with this head for general use. Very solid and easy to use. If it matters it is also made in the US.

This is a great ballhead. Have used it for several days, supporting my D810 with various lenses up to 70-200mm 2.8 on a Gitzo Explorer and it performs beautifully. Only wish I had picked one up earlier.

Tension knob loosens up

The tension knob keeps loosening. It drops suddenly and then my camera pops off - even when I have everything cranked down tight. It dropped my brand new r5 and Sigma 24-35 art lens TWICE last night, the second causing a cracked screen. I've had it for a couple of years, but I seriously cannot recommend it. Very sad about this.

Made in America: Multi Use Capability (Solid)

Wanted an Arca Swiss type ballhead to use in conjunction with Promedia's L bracket for portrait shots in the field. If you were like me, you were inundated with all the ballhead manufactures and top reviews. I turned to a photographer mentor who teaches photography and uses RSS's BH-55/ BH-40 (Travel Tripod). He also has said that he wanted to try the Acratech product because of its versatility--recommended this as well. Tough choice! In the $400 range, these are the two that surfaced. Here is why I went with the Acratech GP-ss: 1) Made in USA 2) 10 year Warranty 3) Gimbal & Stitch Panoramic option 4) Light weight 5) Smooth Mechanism for rotating camera 6) Wanted to support small business during these times 7) But the top reason is the safety feature on the Lever Clamp- must first push a release before you can open the lever-- with $4K - $5K of equipment sitting on ballhead I do not want an inadvertent lever release. Feels sturdy and secure with my D850 and Sigma Art lens...so far so good!

If the ballhead will support 25 lbs, why can't you mount a 600 mm lens to it? My camera & lens, combined, only weigh 8.4 lbs
Asked by: Janet
My guess is torque — the head holds a lot of weight if that weight is centered above the ball, but a longer lens may cause the head to slip. I use mine with heavy gear (including large format), but no long lenses… so it might be worth trying, or getting in touch with Acratech directly to get their thoughts.

question

For those who have had the opportunity to test both the gp-ss and the Markins q3i - how does the post lockdown creep compare (i.e. the amount the viewfinder moves vertically after locking down the ball)
Asked by: Jon
B&H does not carry the other brand. But the Acratech GP-ss Ballhead with Lever Clamp as a Gimbal head it does lock the camera/lens in place very well.

IN fact, you do not need a separate ball head. This tripod has it built in already.

question

Are there any issues using a nodal rail with this lever clamp? Is there any big advantages to the lever style clamp vs the screw type?
Asked by: Jon
It should be fine as long as the rail is Arca-Swiss style. The lever is quicker to be loosened or tighten to take it off.And the knob can in some cases get in the way verses a lever.

question

I have the QR-20 plate for my Oben head. I need to know if someone actually can confirm that the Acratech GP-ss ballhead will accept the QR-20 plate without any problem. A salesrep told me that I would need an Oben ballhead to fit the QR-20 plate and it is not compatible.
Asked by: Anonymous
The Oben QR-20 quick release will be compatible with the Acratech GP-SS Ball Head.

Will the Peak Design plate work on this ball head?
Asked by: Philip
Hi Philip, Our lever clamp will adjustable to work with any plate that is Arca Swiss style. This was done because there is some very slight size variations to the distance between the dovetails between different manufacturers. We knew that in order to have a plate fit properly, the lever clamp needs to be adjustable. I hope this helps. Sincerely, Acratech

question

Will the Really Right Stuff B5D3-LB L-Plate work with this ballhead?
Asked by: Ravinder K.
Yes, because they are both Arca Swiss compatible. Our lever is adjustable to accommodate other manufacturers plates and brackets. Please refer to the instructions or our video tutorial if you need assistance with adjusting. You can also call Acratech directly and have someone walk you through the process. It's pretty easy.
