Cokin CH150B58A overview

  • 1Description

The Cokin 58mm PURE Harmonie Variable Density Neutral Gray Filter is a solid variable neutral density filter providing a reduction of about 1 to 8 stops. The 0.3 to 2.4+ (ND2-ND300) density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring, allowing you to previsualize the additional exposure length required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. For easier, repeatable control over density settings, the front ring is also visually demarcated with dots that each represent one stop of neutral density.

The EVERCLEAR 5 Coating Technology is a multi-layered anti-reflective coating applied to the filter substrate in order to maintain effective light transmission and suppress surface reflections and flare. Additionally, the coating provides protection against five distinct elements: water, oil, dust, soil, and scratches.

This optical glass filter is set within a thin aluminum filter ring, which measures just 9.5mm-thick. This slender profile is ideally suited for use with wide-angle lenses in order to lessen the likelihood of vignetting.

Variable neutral density filter allows you to dial in differing amounts of density scene to scene.
ND 0.3 to 2.4+ filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.
Providing a reduction of 1 to about 8 stops, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.
Filter does not affect coloration of the image.
Anti-reflective EVERCLEAR 5 multi-layered coating helps to protect the filter from water, oil, dust, soil, and scratches, in addition to maintaining image contrast and reducing lens flare and ghosting.
Thin aluminum filter ring measures 9.5mm-thick, making it ideal for use with wide angle lenses in order to prevent vignetting.

    Cokin CH150B58A reviews

58mm PURE Harmonie Variable Density Neutral Gray Filter is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent quality I was new to Vari-ND filters, and they come at all price-points.I went with a middle-of-the-road price-point, hoping to avoid the dreaded X-phenomenon I had read about.I was very pleased with this Cokin filter. I use it on my Panasonic GH3 and the Panny 14-140 lens. No X. Clear. No vignetting. I haven't tried anything more expensive or more cheap. But I'm glad I landed on this one.Shortly after, I bought it, the price went up $ perhaps to reflect it's great quality.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Acceptable but not a premium product I got this filter for creating time-lapse video with several of my cameras. My main concern is with the color. Turn the filter one way, and blues are enhanced, turn it the other way and you get a greenish-yellow tint. Also the extreme dark setting is not useable. When you turn the filter to the very darkest part of the range, you get a big dark X across the frame, indicating that the polarization on the opposing filters is not perfectly straight or parallel. The rest of the range appears to be even, however.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Less Ghosting and Flare This is the fifth variable ND filter that I've owned and by far the most expensive. So far it seems worth it. The problem with my previous Vari NDs was ghosting and lens flare when shooting indoors with over-exposed windows in the distant background. I can see less ghosting and flare with this one so the multi-coating seems to be working. It's thin, so it works on my 24mm-full-frame-equivalent lens without vignetting. It has 62mm front threads (something that I wish they'd state in the item's specifications, I had to figure it out by measuring) so it'll take a sun hood. I have one on order right now so I can't comment on that as yet. It spins freely without any hard stops like some other Vari NDs. Personally, I like hard stops because then it's impossible to get the dreaded X effect. But I'll make do without. There are MAX and MIN markings which help. It seems rugged and durable. Overall I'm happy with it so far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Clean and easy I use this on my Panasonic GH4's Lumix 35-100 f2.8 for both professional photography and video gigs. This allows me to set an open f-stop to maximize the shallow depth of field on the MFT system while still being clear enough to let the autofocus react quickly. Lens flairs are clean and disperse evenly on the filter. I have used cheaper ND Filters and you can tell the difference.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smooth and just right Loved the variability of this filter. Used it on several water shots, and allowed me to use 30 second long exposures to create awesome images. Super clarity. Highly recommended .

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Ridiculous Case The filter is great. However, the holder/case this 58mm filter came in is 110mm across! Try to fit that into your small camera bag. I've been looking locally for a camera shop that will sell me a normal camera filter holder but they don't have them. I guess this is Cokin's universal filter holder, but it sucks.
