Redrock Micro microRemote Reviews

Best Bang for Buck

I've been using this system for over a year and it has never once failed me on set (knock on wood). I was hesitant like many others to purchase this system due to age old reviews and impressions floating around the internet, but I am so happy with my experience that I felt the need to share! The only reason I am giving this 4 stars instead of 5 is now Redrock has newer designed motors with a right angle connector which I prefer over my current motor's design.

Solid for the price

It's a fairly good follow focus for the price. It's nice to have the auto calibrate function although I find it often doesn't work correctly. Another thing is if the gear jumps off the lens it will keep spinning until I unplug the power. It would be nice if there was a button to stop it from spinning. All in its worth the price.

This system has been great, we did have some problems in the beginning but Redrock has great support and got everything fixed, they even sent a unit to use since it was the day before a huge shoot. Our circumstance was a little extreme and they may not always do this but its been a great tool.

Broke after four times using. Motor simply stuck and stop working. I expected much more quality for this price.

There's plenty of fish in the sea

I bought my microremote a few months ago just to test it out. It worked great for my first job and then it began to fail intermittently from the second job onwards. my first discovery was that it would auto calibrate which successfully ran the full range of a lens, but then i could not get the handset to get the motor to line up infinity. I would recalibrate, manual calibrate to both ends of the focus and once the brain began to be controlled by the handset, no dice. No infinity. I emailed customer service because there is not an actual person to speak with on the phone. They emailed me an 8 step process to remove backlash. However after trying this process 10 times, I discovered that the problem was not the backlash. I emailed them again and they said it was the torque. Wrong again. I've emailed them twice since then about it and then further to ask how much it would cost to fix the handset (which had been damaged on set) and no response so far for two days. I've had to au rent a bartech several times to cover for the microremote failing. I think if you have no other choice but to use a microremote, perhaps go for it, but if you don't want hassles, there are plenty of other options out there. I definitely encourage people to test it out, but heed my warning that it will do unexpected things when you need it to be consistent.

Junk

This thing constantly breaks or freaks out on set (always at the worst times). I've had to scramble and sub-rent a Bartech three times because this unit has failed on the shoot. The motor isn't very strong and the calibration process, while simple, doesn't always work. The entire handwheel stopped working once shortly after I bought it. I opened up the back of the unit to find that one of the sub boards fell right out of the main circuit board! I also ordered two extra d-tap cables and found that one was cross-wired. Nice. Stay away from this garbage and save your pennies for something better. I will say that the fingerwheel option is nice when you're operating on your own.

STAY AWAY

I wanted this to work so badly and now over 3k in the hole. Have had this product for 6 months its spent more time getting repaired than on set. The motor has failed twice, a few days after I first bought it and then again three months later. The base station also stopped working the 2nd time. Poorly made! My D-tap cable had a bad sodler job and stopped working on set. I had to solder the connection back together. No crimp in the line??? Cheapest D-tap cable I've ever seen. Getting this serviced takes forever and they return ground so expect to be without this unit for weeks at a time every few months when it breaks. You're far better off renting this unit or one much better built. Do not buy it!

Unbelievable Quality for Price

I was very hesitate to buy this product, but with the cost of a multichannel remote being north of 10 grand, I figured I could give it a try. I was very surprised by the build quality and responsiveness of the unit. The TORQUE motor (which is the most important component of any remote system) is incredibly smooth and reliable. If you are looking for a single channel remote then look no further, this is an amazing unit for the price, actually for any price. I don't give good reviews often, in fact, I rarely review products at all, but this is an exceptional product and deserves recognition.
