RME UCX overview

  • 1Description

The Fireface UCX from RME is a USB/FireWire digital audio interface that provides thirty-six channels of audio (eighteen inputs and outputs) with all channels available simultaneously. It features two, low distortion, digitally controlled microphone preamps with up to 65 dB of gain, excellent signal to noise ratio, and a flat frequency response. Each channel can be individually switched to deliver 48V phantom power.

Two front panel TRS inputs can operate as Hi-Z inputs for plugging in up to two guitars or other instruments with no other hardware required. LEDs for signal, clip, and activated phantom power give a complete overview of the unit's status. AutoSet allows for digitally controlling the gain in the event of impending overload to prevent clipping the A/D converter, while simultaneously not degrading sound quality that would occur if using additional analog circuitry.

The included DSP-based TotalMix software mixer supports full independent routing and mixing of all eighteen inputs and output channels to all eighteen physical outputs. Up to nine independent stereo sub-mixes, plus a comprehensive control room section, offer excellent monitoring capabilities and routing flexibility. The software includes a complete effects engine with all effects available at all sample rates.

The per channel effects include three-band parametric EQ, adjustable low cut filter, auto level, compressor, expander, MS processing and phase reversal. Reverb and echo effects are available for all channels via a stereo send and return bus. The effects section not only adds a lot of flexibility to the recording chain, but makes latency burdened recording obsolete. The main functions of TotalMix can be remote controlled via MIDI with any Mackie Control compatible controller.

    RME UCX reviews

Fireface UCX - 36-Channel USB/FireWire Audio Interface is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Device After wasting many years trying to dail out the inharent mudd of an M-Audio interface, the Fireface UCX has resolved all my recording/mix clearity and clock issue. So far this is a no hassel device. The software interface is well though out and make set up super easy. The pre amps are surprisingly acurate. I use this with Ableton Live 8 and Pro Tools 10 on a Mac Book Pro. There are no latency issues with Live, Pro Tools has a few minor ones but that is more because of how P.T. is made (inefficent use of host processors). So if you are serious about having quality pro recordings at a reasonable price this is the device to get.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Drivers, preamps, quality, Price... Everything about this device has lived up to my expectations. It has great Pre-amps. It's portable, sturdy, and pleasant to look at. The sound quality and i/o options are all fantastic. If I had any qualms at all, it would be the following: *What does USB3 compatible mean? All USB2 devices are USB3 compatible, what differentiates this from them? *The GUI for TotalmixFX looks like it was designed in 1998 and hasn't changed. Luckily it works great and is very flexible, but put a pretty face on it RME! *It's very expensive for Prosumer gear... But it's very cheap for Professional gear, so maybe it's a bargain... Not very serious drawbacks, and the positives are too many to mention. Thanks RME! Also, B&H was very amenable to me. I tried a few other interfaces that didn't click with my setup before deciding on the UCX. Each time one of them let me down I brought it in and they accepted my return without question. Thanks!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from these things are great I work at a well-known audio company. My department uses quite a few of these audio interfaces and we love 'em. The mixer is flexible, the DSP works well and they are easy to get up and running. From time to time we need to stream audio signals in various compressed formats, which requires a driver/hardware that is able to pass signals which are bit-for bit. The UCX works perfectly for this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Audio Interface for a live performer I use an audio interface for live performance, so in many ways this interface was overkill. The need for crystal clear D/A conversion is not as critical for live performance as for recording. I was stepping up from a very satisfactory Focusrite Scarlett 2i4. I purchased the product not exactly knowing how the increased capability would really benefit my setup. I purchased it because of RME's reputation, and just the desire for better equipment. I was nervous that I was wasting my money as this unit costs 7 times more than the 2i4. But I am happy to report that the flexibility in routing and mixing through total mix has solved a lot of my problems. 1) I wanted to be able to run my mic through my system. The focusrite couldn't add reverb and I didn't want to send a dry signal of my vocals to FOH. Totalmix can add reverb so I now can run it through my system. Having my mic run through my system is important because: 2) I have been running IEM's, but often I am the only one in the band that is. With Totalmix I keep my FOH sound separate from my IEM mix and adjust everything to taste. The extra inputs combined with the total mix software really allow for infinite flexibility. No longer to I have to figure out how I am going to solve any routing / mixing problem. I am excited about this product and do not regret the extra expense.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lots of routing capabilities I mainly bought this to get fiber optic, spdif and analog ins and outs. It works perfectly for my needs. I also route into a Neve Portico II for processing (it has a low gain to utilize the headroom of the neve) I have jbl 305 monitors and was about to return them until I got the RME UCX. So, the conversion must be pretty good.
