    Elinchrom 500 reviews

BRX 500 Monolight is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent upgrade from the D-lite 400 I have been using the D-lite 400 RX strobes for portrait and product shoots. I bought this light when it went on sale at B&H to see if it there was a major difference between the two and if it made sense to upgrade. I am definitely going to slowly upgrade my D-lites with the BRX 500. It has a more robust build quality and the power is superior, as would be expected. I found that if I use just one light for a shoot, the 500 is far better, I am able to use just one light more often than with the 400s. Used as a main light for portraits, it has a a greater range of stops so I am able to tweak the lighting for a better exposure. I use the d-lites for the background, hair lights and fill lights and it works well. I will eventually replace all of my d-lights with this model, but it makes an excellent addition to the D-lights and if you are still building up your studio strobe collection, adding one or two of these will increase your options for lighting. I live in Japan and the voltage range was a big seller for me since I wanted to get the same quality of light using Japan's 100/50 electric system. Also, for travel to places that use 220v, this works for that also with the need for a converter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Elinchrom Perfect student lighting Elinchrom lighting has been a part of my personal equipment for over 10 years. As a professional photographer, I love the ability & portablility to have such a powerful unit. I have enjoyed the Elicnhrom BRX 500 so much I decided to purchase these units for the lighting class I teach at the university. There are a few models out ther that are much more affordable but if you're looking for quality and not quantity, Elinchrom emits that standard.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good lights, but flawed! Although these lights give me the quality and control I want and all for a great price, the mounting capabilities for certain modifiers is EXTREMELY frustrating. Every time I mount my larger soft boxe, such as the 5ft Octabank, they snap off and fall if my lights are at any kind of angle or are moved/bumped. This makes shooting larger modifiers virtually impossible! Highly don't recommend these lights if you are looking to shoot large modifiers. If this weren't the case, these lights would be perfect!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from An great studio light We have 5 of these for our studio. 500W is more than enough light for any situation we have come across thus far. These are very well designed studio lights, and it's especially great that they have built in skyport receivers, which is a fantastic wireless flash system. The only thing I'm not a huge fan of is there speed rings, and light modifier systems. There are a real pain in the butt to get setup. I know a lot of others like the speed ring system, so maybe I'm doing something wrong, but all of the light modifiers made for elinchrom that I buy are such a pain to assemble. Comes with nice long power cables, and I appreciate that they use standard power cable inputs so that they can connect to battery packs made by other manufactuers, rather than having to go with some proprietary system. They are a little too big to be used out in the field though, these are strictly studio lights imo, but that's why they have the quadra line. Just wish the quadras put out more than 400w, because in the field there are situations where I would need more power than that. The modeling lights are really fragile and proprietary so you can't just go buy any light, you basically have to order them, at least I have to in Los Angeles because no one carries Elinchrom products around here, it's either Profoto or Paul C Buff. So I bought like 15 of them for backup supply. I broke 2 of them in one photo shoot, and that was just moving the lights around. Recycle time is very fast even at full power. the sound that goes off to let you know that the lights are ready is very annoying, kinda wish they had a slightly different tone to them that wasn't so harsh. But at least you're not going to be wondering whether or not they are ready! They are plenty loud enough... The back panel could be better, it's a pretty clumsy interface. You actually have to read the manual to even know how to use these lights, because otherwise the controls make no logical sense whatsoever. But once you get it figured out you're good to go.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not impressed, I'm switching brands! I'm long overdue for an upgrade to my Elinchrom D-Lite kit and decided to slowly upgrade to the BRX 500's but I actually felt compelled to return this item. The mounting was course and difficult to lock and still had a tough time holding my up my $ beauty dish, I was praying the whole time I shot with it that it wouldn't fall off (it did a couple times). I've made the painstaking decision to upgrade and switch to Profoto. Elinchrom has excellent modifiers but they need to get it together w/ ther monolights!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Studio & Location Strobe I just purchased another two of these units, now I have 6. They have been very dependable, well built and I use them in both my studio as well as on location for weddings, green screen etc. Have run them using the power cord and using the Photogenic ion lithium battery packs.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great light! I have 3 of these lights for my headshot business. They all work great. I haven't had any issues as of yet. I bought the kit then a extra one. They are easy to use and easy to setup.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Be Aware, No sockets for Pocket Wizard!! I'm not sure why but Elinchrome has removed the socket from the back of this unit that you use to plug in your Pocket Wizard Power ST4!! Super annoying!! I now have to return this product to get the older rx 600 version to use my Pocket Wizards!!
