Vello FWM-N overview

  • 1Description

The FreeWave Micro Wireless Remote Shutter Release for Select Nikon DSLRs from Vello is a miniaturized, reliable remote control kit that will trigger your 10-pin Nikon DSLR from up to 328' away. Ideal for sports, wildlife photos or self-portraits, the kit contains a transmitter and receiver that are small enough to easily fit in a shirt pocket. The system works on the 2.4 GHz frequency for reduced radio interference and extended operating range, and since radio signals pass through obstructions you don't need to position them in line-of-sight.

Simply lock the tiny receiver into the 10-pin port and select 1 of 16 channels for use. No connecting wires are necessary - the receiver is powered by the camera. The handheld transmitter has a channel selector corresponding to the receiver's as well as Focus, Shutter and Shooting Alarm color-coded confirmation LEDs. The transmitter runs on one easily-sourced AAA battery, while the receiver is powered by the camera itself. Included is also a removable lanyard for use as a wrist strap.

    Vello FWM-N reviews

FreeWave Micro Wireless Remote Shutter Release for Select Nikon DSLRs is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 79.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loving it! I am a Real Estate photographer and I have tried and been disappointed by many remote shutter releases. I have used inexpensive and very pricey shutter releases. I was not sure what to expect with this unit as I have tried and been unhappy with other shutter releases that screw into the 10-pin port on my D700. This unit is very compact and because it plugs into the 10-pin port, it allows me to utilize the hot shoe that was previously occupied by the previous shutter release which is also made by Vello. I have used this unit on 4 home shoots and been very pleased. My one complaint is that the remote used for triggering the shutter release is small and gets lost in my front pocket.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little Unit Before I dropped it into a waterfall, I used to use the Vello cable-type unit that plugged into my D800 10-pin connector and then mounted on the reciever on the hot shoe. That seemed annoying as it used my hot shoe when I needed it for triggering flash. This newer, totally wireless unit is a joy to use. Yes, it adds a little bulk to the camera, but it doesn't bother me. It has an on/off switch and I can change lenses when it is still mounted on the cmmera. It has never missed a beat once. Just a great and simple unit. Great to use on commercial jobs where a lot of action is going on.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Be Aware of How it Fits! I use remote shutter releases extensively and have had reliability issues in the past with wired systems (failed cables that attach to the camera). So I purchased this product specifically so that I could eliminate any cables. I have plenty of faith in Vello products and this product performs as advertised, but only 2 stars for my review because ... The good news: Small, light-weight, compact design with suitable finish. As I said, the system works as advertised with good range and I have had no problems with the shutter not firing when it's supposed to. As a basic shutter release, the system functions as expected in all camera release modes. The sliding button guard on the transmitter is a nice feature. The bad news: I personally do not use the on-camera flash, but if you do, forget about using the flash mode/flash compensation button!! Unless you can get your fingers into a 6mm space, you can not get to the flash mode/flash compensation button when the received is installed. But what is REALLY killing me is that when installed on my D810, it is extremely difficult to get to the exposure bracketing button. I use exposure bracketing extensively that always involves slow shutter speeds and long exposures (hence my need for a remote shutter release). In the work I do, it is also necessary for me to reset the exposure bracket, possibly 2 or 3 times, for a single image. But the receiver covers 1/3 of the diameter of the exposure bracketing button. Since there is no way to avoid contacting the receiver with your finger to press the bracket button, the contact flexes the receiver and really causes undue side-loading on the 10-pin connector. I have no idea how flexing this connection will affect reliability over time. I should have caught both of these problems when I was looking at the product images, but unfortunately I missed it. I have attached an image to this review showing the receiver's profile and how it blocks the buttons. So, while I want to give the product a high rating for functionality and performance, I am giving a low rating since the design inhibits other camera features, which I think could have been avoided.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this Remote shutter release. It's small but easy to attach to my camera. It worked perfectly the first time I tried it. I especially like the fact that it works for bulb setting by just clicking once to start the exposure and you don't have to hold the button down. Just press it again to close the shutter. When attached to my camera it's not on the flash shoe. I like this better than using remote cords but you do have to make sure you have battery power in the hand held trigger. I haven't checked the maximum distance of operation but it's very unlikely I would ever use it from more than a few feet.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Small and no wires Works great. I've had a variety of 10 pin accessories for my Nikons. Every on has had some sort of cable or connector problem including my previous wireless release. The only wired connections that have held up are Nikon brand. Now no more cables to fail! I like the small size of the receiver too. Reciever is powered from the camera so it doesn't need a unusual size battery like my previous release. The transmitter battery is a common AAA so that's a plus too. My only complaint is that it is quite difficult to tighten and loosen the connector screw. That kept me from giving the FreeWave 5 stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Frees up your hotshoe; no dangling wires This replaced another Vello model that was fine but I didn't want the receiver plugged into the hotshoe and the wire connecting it to the camera.Others have said that you cannot turn the receiver off...not true! Just hold down the little silver button on it until it blinks rapidly, then release it; it will no longer blink is off.A note of caution: take the battery out of the remote if it is not going to be used for awhile; the battery leaked and ruined the contacts to the point that it works intermittently now. Will be ordering another.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Compact but ... I purchased this FreeWave Micro Wireless for three reasons: 1) I liked the compact size; 2) I liked the fact that the receive used camera battery power instead of a coin battery, which can be difficult to come by in he field; and 3)it has a slide to prevent accidental shutter actuations. So far so good, right?Well, not so fast. As long as the receiver is attached to the camera it uses battery power, even if the camera is turned off. You will either need to remove the receiver or remove the camera battery to turn it off. There is no off switch. So, what did I gain over the Vello Wireless Shutterboss I had been using? A smaller unit that connects directly with the 10-pin Nikon connector avoiding the hotshoe mount and cable, and a slide that covers the actuator button on the transmitter. I lost a bit of functionality and traded one potentially battery draining problem for another potentially battery draining problem. The FreeWave Micro Wireless Remote Shutter Release for Select Nikon DSLRs by Vello works as advertised but there should clearly be a statement regarding camera battery usage and inability to turn the receiver off, even if the camera is off...I like the unit's compactness and it functions as intended. It does not appear to be overly robust in its construction though and time will tell if durability is a problem. I have kept my Vello Shutterboss a will continue to use it as convenient.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My trick for this Great Product Leave the receiver on once you have it attached. Mine has been permanently attached to my D800E now for years. The antenna is now bent about 80 degrees from being packed away in my over packed bag but still works every time and does not get lost or use valuable time fitting. My only grip is that the transmitter which I leave on my keyring eventually can not take the strain and will break away eventually ( But still work ). Otherwise I could guarantee to always have them with me all the time. I work in some pretty uncomfortable industrial locations and this little product is one of the most useful bits of kit I have. Can not work without it and a spare tucked away just incase a 200 ton truck runs over the whole lot.
