Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

Characterized by its versatile zoom range and bright design, the Sony A-mount 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM from Sigma covers a wide-angle to portrait-length range and features a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture to excel in available light conditions. The optical design incorporates a pair of low dispersion elements along with a trio of aspherical elements to reduce a variety of aberrations and promote greater sharpness and clarity. A Super Multi-Layer Coating is also used to suppress flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy. Benefitting the optics, a Hyper Sonic Motor affords quick and quiet autofocus performance and the lens is distinguished by its sleek profile, making it an ideal lens for walkaround and travel shooting.

Standard zoom lens is designed for APS-C-format Sony A-mount cameras and provides a 25.5-75mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in low-light conditions and also provides greater control over the focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.
Two F Low Dispersion (FLD) elements are featured in the optical design, and help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy.
Three aspherical elements are used to help limit distortion and spherical aberrations and also contribute to greater overall sharpness and accurate rendering.
Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM), along with an internal focusing design, realizes quick and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Minimum focusing distance of 11" and a 1:5 maximum magnification ratio benefits working with close-up subjects.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

    Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 reviews

17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Zoom Lens for Sony DSLRs with APS-C Sensors is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Image qualtiy great, but autofocus bad I just bought this lens for the sony a65 camera. In manual focus, with focus peaking on, this lens is amazing. The images are extremely sharp and beautiful. However, autofocus is off big time. The images are horrible with autofocus. 1/6 times the image will look sharp enough to use. I am thinking if I should send sigma my camera and lens to adjust it for me. The price savings was better compared to the sony 16-50 lens so I'm going to keep it. I don't regret buying this lens, but for others, keep in mind there can be an autofocus problem with this lens and sony cameras. ........

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid all-around lens for APS sized dSLR Purchased this as an upgrade to the plastic-y kit lens and have been truly impressed with its performance. Build quality is good - solid but not as massive as the Zeiss 16-80 *T and Sony 16-50 f2.8 offerings. Sharp throughout the range, with distortion and vignetting that is almost entirely correctable in post processing (DXO handles it very well).AF has been fast and accurate, with minimal 'hunting' even in low light.I also had the Tamron version but replaced it with the Sigma when the Tammy was damaged. Overall these two lenses are *extremely* close in sharpness, but I prefer the Sigma. I find it to be marginally sharper, and I prefer the way it feels in the hand over the Tamron.A few minor things I don't like - I'd like a slightly larger focus ring, and it is only possible to lock (park) the lens at the 17mm end. I'd really like the ability to lock the lens at 50mm at times. So far I haven't had any issues with lens creep, but all the same I'd like to be able to lock it at both ends of the zoom range.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quick zoom and focus I use this lens for indoor sports photography. Particularly for basketball and volleyball. It was a quick zoom and quick focus. Mine is paired with a Sony A58.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lense for a Great Price I'm mostly using it for landscapes, night photography, and portraits. For the price, its one of the best lenses I've ever used.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sigma 17-50mm 2.8 vs Sony Zeiss 16-80mm 3.5-4.5 Replaced the Sony Zeiss with a Sigma lens on my Sony A77II. It focus’s much faster, is just as sharp and faster. There is no annoying zoom creep. A great all around APS-c lens and the perfect compliment to my Sigma 24-70mm 2.8 on my full frame Sony A99II.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My new favorite lens Now I use this lens 90% of time with my cam. Excellent quality, very fast focus and so sharp. It have only one little thing is the minimal but exist chromatic aberration, but you clean that with a program

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It's an ok option, for a good price It's a good relation cost-benefits, but the autofocus is very slow if compared with Sony lenses. Having some problems to adapt in situations that require a fastest focus.
