Sony HDR-TD30 Overview

  • 1Description

The Sony HDR-TD30V HD 3D Handycam Camcorder features two 20.4MP Exmore R CMOS sensors and dual, stereoscopic Sony G lenses, a configuration designed for capturing true 1920 x 1080 3D video. The TD30V is capable of recording 1080/60p and 24p in 2D and 3D. The 3.5" Xtra Fine LCD display has 1229K resolution and allows users to monitor and playback 2D/3D footage without glasses.

Optical SteadyShot image stabilization with Active Mode compensates for camera shake to deliver smooth video in 2D and 3D. In addition to the TD30V's imaging capabilities, a 5.1 surround sound microphone and wind noise reduction enable high quality audio recordings. Other key features include an Active Interface Shoe, Intelligent Auto Mode, and a built-in USB cable.

Dual Sensors and Sony G Lenses
The Sony Handycam HDR-TD30V utilizes two Full HD 20.4MP sensors to capture true 1920 x 1080 3D video. Most 3D cameras achieve the 3D affect by splitting a single 1920 x 1080 signal into two 960 x 540 channels, thereby limiting resolution on the final output. In addition, dual Sony G lenses deliver accurate color reproduction, sharp, detailed images, and wide angle shooting.
1920x1080 Full HD 24p/60p
Capturing 1920 x 1080 resolution lets you record your memories in Full High Definition quality. The TD30V is capable of 60p recording and playback on a compatible HDTV via HDMI, and users looking for film-like video will appreciate the 24p recording mode.
3D Ready 3.5" Xtra Fine LCD Display
The 3.5" Xtra Fine LCD touchscreen display has 1229K dot resolution and allows users to view 3D content without the need for 3D glasses.
Optical SteadyShot with Active Mode
Optical SteadyShot image stabilization with Active Mode compensates for camera shake to deliver smooth video, whether you're shooting in 3D or 2D.
10x Optical Zoom and 17x Extended Zoom
A 17x Extended Zoom works in conjunction with a 10x optical zoom to get even closer to the action while maintaining HD image quality.
Tracking Focus and Face Detection
Tracking Focus works as an extension of Face Detection to allow you to select an object with a touch of the LCD and have the focus follow the selected object.
5.1 Surround Sound Microphone
Dolby Digital 5.1 channel recording captures active sounds coming from all directions, so you can experience your home movies the way you experienced them while recording.
Active Interface Shoe
The Active Interface Shoe lets you mount Intelligent Accessories, such as external lights and microphones, which can help extend the capabilities of your camcorder.
Easily Switch Between 2D and 3D
A dedicated switch allows for easy switching from 2D to 3D recording. In 3D mode, only 3D content will be displayed for playback, however when in 2D mode, all content will be displayed and played back in 2D. This allows you to record all your video in 3D and choose later whether or not you want to playback in 2D or 3D.
Intelligent Auto Mode
Intelligent Auto mode goes a step beyond traditional auto modes by analyzing your shot and then automatically selecting the appropriate settings from ten distinct scene modes. There are 180 different combinations possible: Portrait, Baby, Walk, Tripod, Backlight, Landscape, Spotlight, Twilight, Macro, Low light, Auto Wind Noise Reduction.
Sequential Still Photos with Golf Shot
Golf Shot captures a few seconds of motion as a sequence of up to 22 still images, which can be viewed/printed individually or as a composite "sequence shot" image, perfect for analyzing the nuances of a golf swing, tennis serve, and other fast action.
Wind Noise Reduction
Wind Reduction reduces noise and interference that is produced when wind passes over the microphone. The camcorder utilizes an advanced sound processor and sophisticated noise reduction algorithms to reduce wind noise by up to 10dB compared to other models. In addition to reducing low frequency noise, iAuto also suppresses mid- and upper-frequency noise, resulting in clearer, more enjoyable sound.
Mic and Headphone Jacks
The TD30V features dedicated mic and headphone inputs for expanded audio recording options and convenient monitoring of audio with headphones (external microphones and headphones sold separately).
Clear Phase Stereo Speakers
Clear Phase stereo speakers with linear phase correction bring your video alive. Drawing on Sony's high-end audio expertise, S-Master digital amplifier technology is utilized to produce more true-to-life sound.
Built-in Flash
The built-in flash will help you shed light on your subjects when shooting still images, giving you more flexibility when capturing memories.
Built-in USB
The built-in, high-speed USB 2.0 cable provides a connection to your computer for charging or file transfer, without having to remember separate cables. It also fits conveniently into the hand strap so it is out of the way until you need it. Charging your camcorder is faster than ever now; for every two minutes of charge time you get approximately one minute of recording time.
Supplied HDMI Cable
A 3D ready HDMI (mini to full) cable is supplied for viewing on a compatible HDTV.
Geotagging with Built-in GPS
A built-in GPS receiver makes the TD30V an ideal choice for travelers. The receiver gives you the ability to view your current location on the LCD map display, as well as "tag" your shooting locations. Tagged videos and still images can be reviewed and played back using the Map Index function on the camcorder or once downloaded to your computer using PlayMemories Home software. Additionally, the receiver automatically adjusts your camcorder's clock to the proper time zone. The map service requires a computer with an Internet connection.
Direct Copy to External HDD without PC
Store your memories in a whole new way with the ability to copy videos from your camcorder directly to an external hard disk drive (sold separately), all without a computer.
Event Browse
Event Browse conveniently groups your images and videos together for easier viewing. The date range that Event Browse groups your pictures and videos is easily adjusted to suit your needs. When used with the Highlight Playback feature, making and sharing a highlight reel from your event is easy and fun.
Highlight Playback

    Sony HDR-TD30 Reviews

HDR-TD30V HD 3D Handycam Camcorder (Black) is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tue ultimate 3D machine After hesitating reading reviews of previous models, I opted for buying this camcorder looking at shooting (and viewing on my 3D-ready TV) home videos. What a perfect choice! This machine has it all: good feel and look, superb definition, natural colors, easy of use, but especially stunning 3D! The three-dimensional look is awesome not only on the LCD (without glasses) but as well on a large screen HDTV. The sound in 5.1 surround is also incredibly effective. All in all an outstanding piece of technology at an affordable price. Burning a 3D BluRay however still a challenge for me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wow first but disappointing at the end When playing my 3D clips using the camera HDMI to 3D TV in 3D mode, the 3D effect is perfect. I'm disappointed cause I found out that I'm not able to edit my MTS files in 3D. I bought this camera for a special 3D project and I'm still looking for a way to edit the files, adding fade-in and crop. Even with Sony Vegas 13 Pro, I only get a 3D effect that is flat like if I was in 2D. I found out that the clip I'm editing has to left sides ou right sides, giving me a flat 3D result. I called Sony and they told me that I cannot edit those files, only 2D. I hve to play the files from the camera if I want 3D films. Disappointed!!! But still searching for a way to do it!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Camera, Software Sony Support NOT I would only recommend it to a friend with the caveat that they shouldn't expect to use the software that comes with it, and will likely need to lay out another several hundred $'s for Vegas Pro. I use it for everything, including when I want a still image because I can convert the 3D video into 3D stills.Great video quality, 3D effect is decent, image stabilization works very well. Pretty easy to figure out without the manual. Surround sound is pretty cool. The fres software that comes with it does not do as indicated (can't make 3D blurays). Sony support was unable to get the issue resolved. I had to buy Vegas Pro software to make useful 3D video files. The native Sony 3D format although technically MVC, is not well recognized as such by several other software packages, only Vegas Pro (sorry non Windows users). Doesn't support 3D stills natively, but 3D still images can be made from extracted video frames.Ignore Adequate Support above, it should be <Adequate, but the < character doesn't show. I can't remove either by unchecking it...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 3D Effect 10+, Editing Files 0 I've been playing with this 3D video recorder since August and have been dragging my feet till now to write a review. First of all I totally agree with the review before me that it is BEYOND frustrating that you can't (at this time) do any type of simple editing with this device. A few stereoscopic titles coming out of the screen and some cross fades from one scene to the next is all I want, but it seems it's not possible at this time. But let me get to the good stuff first: Having been into 3D Photography for 35+ years, I've pretty much waited my entire life to find this video camera. Let me state right off that when viewing the videos I hook the camera up to an external hard drive (where all my files are stored) and into my Sony 3D TV. No third party stuff here. The clarity of watching HD 3D video on a large size screen at 60 frames / second is breath taking. At this point in my career it takes a lot to make me go Wow, but this palm sized video camera really impresses me. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it shoots into the sun. Try shooting over a white snowbank into the sun and having it exposed perfectly. And I mean perfect. No lens flare, no nothing. Trees on the distant hills as far as the eye can see are easily discerned. Sony really gets high marks for sharpness and clarity. Not everything is perfect though. Dynamic range could be a little better (I mean, we could say that for ANY camera system we own, right?) And some ghosting occurs on really bright objects sometimes. Hey, I still give them 9/10 for both. The sound capture is surprisingly good, also. You'll want to get a large memory card, at least 32GB (which holds about 2 1/2 hours) or a 64GB (5+ hours). An NPFV70 or 100 battery is a must, also. The NPFV50 only lasts about an hour. I also own the Cyclopital 3D Base Extender. Haven't used it a lot, but initial results looks great. Now back to the first paragraph. I gave this review Yes I would recommend this to a friend because this is an excellent camera system that is easy to use and gives results WELL BEYOND the price you pay for it. Buy some sort of small, external hard drive that you download all your clips on, hook it up to your camera, and play them off your 3D TV. You will not be disappointed. Not in the least. Trying to edit them and doing something artistic is the downside.... and it's a biggy. I'm hoping in the near future someone, anyone, comes up with software to complete this puzzle. But for now, I am having a BLAST !!!!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome camera, with some exceptions... I bought this camera simply because I wanted a 3D camera for my family... It turns out this camera has an awesome 3D video recording capability, it's clear, fluid, good 5.1 audio, everything well balanced. Of course, part of the idea was to save the resulting videos on a 3D bluray disk, and here is when the problems begins; to say it simple: The software provided by Sony doesn't produce 3D bluray. Instead it's like they want you to buy extra software from them, and the cheapest one cost $... So I had to look around, test a few software options, and well, If you allow me, this might help other users... I decided to stay with Cyberlink PowerDirector 13. It does all I need when it comes to 3D, I can also edit my 3D videos, it generates a few different 3D videos and disk formats including Bluray 3D where you can burn it directly or save it as an ISO image; the good thing is it was one of the cheapest around, just $, a few bucks cheaper than the Sony software (and I think it is a lot better)...

    question

Once a recording is made can you play it on a Samsung 3D TV or does it have to be Sony 3D TV.
    Asked by: Anonymous
When movies are recorded in 3D, they are played back in 3D on a 3D TV (any brand). Use the HDMI cable to connect the camcorder to a TV.Make sure that the 2D/3D switch of the camcorder is set to 3D.1. Switch the input on the TV to the connected jack.2. Connect the HDMI cable to the HDMI OUT jack on the camcorder and to the HDMI INjack on the TV.3. Play a movie on the camcorder.

    question

Can we burn it on a blue ray dvd ?
    Asked by: Anonymous
With the appropriate software: The Sony Vegas Pro 12 video editing software features support for 60p, 4K and 3D projects. Unlimited video and audio tracks, an intuitive 64-bit environment and native support for nearly any file format makes Vegas Pro 12 a powerful and professional post production suite. The new Project Interchange feature enables Vegas Pro 12 to import and export a wide range of project files, including Avid Pro Tools, Final Cut Pro 7, Final Cut Pro X (export only), DaVinci Resolve 8, Adobe Premiere Pro CS6, and After Effects CS6. Burn movies to Blu-ray Disc directly from the Vegas Pro 12 timeline for high-definition delivery. Use DVD Architect Pro software (included with the Vegas Pro 12 collection) to author DVD or Blu-ray Disc projects with subtitles, multiple languages, and numerous playback menus. Preview and test your work in real time. Import layered Photoshop .PSD files for buttons and other graphic elements. The MainConcept AVC encoder now supports variable bit rates up to 40 Mbps and average bit rate of 25 Mbps, for better HD quality than ever before. B&H # SOVP12

    question

will this camcorder be able to display its footage in 2D on a non 3D enabled device, if the consumer does not have equipment for 3D mode playback?
    Asked by: Anonymous
Yes - you can choose a 2D playback mode. A dedicated switch allows for easy switching from 2D to 3D recording. In 3D mode, only 3D content will be displayed for playback, however when in 2D mode, all content will be displayed and played back in 2D. This allows you to record all your video in 3D and choose later whether or not you want to playback in 2D or 3D.

    question

Can I just copy the recorded video files to a computer, DATA Bluray (NOT using editing software) or DATA DVD, pendrive or regular external hard drive, and be able to play the video in a computer with HDMI output connected to a regular 3D TV, and I will see the video 3D on TV? (with NO use of the camera!!)Or I'll need to edit and create SPECIAL BluRays to be able to see 3D without the camera?

According to Sony, you can create 3D Blu-ray discs so that you can view 3D movies without the camcorder.

    question

Can you burn the 3D footage to a regular DVD?
    Asked by: Anonymous
Why would you want to burn 3D content to a DVD? The only reason I can think of is that you have no Bluray burner. Is this correct? If so, you probably should buy a Bluray burner since I am not sure about the answer to your question having not actually tried it. Additionally, don't expect to be able to burn the data from this camera to anything without buying additional software like Sony Vegas Pro or equivalent. However, the software which comes with the camera definitely indicates it needs a Bluray for 3D, even though I was unable to get it to work, even with Sony's help. I was greatly disappointed to find out that the software that came with the camera did not allow me to burn my 3D footage to anything. I had to buy Vegas Pro in order to get my footage into formats I could use. Now, that being said, it is theoretically possible to burn the 3D footage to a DVD using the side by side (SBS) capabilities of various software. You could even take the SBS video files and simply load them onto a USB stick in a format that your player or TV support. Then in the 3D settings, you would choose SBS for the format and the TV should be able to display the movie in 3D. Other than the software limitations, I truly do like this camera. You can even use stills taken from the video footage to make 3D images, even though the camera docs indicate that 3D stills are not possible. I hope this helps.
