Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.0 overview

  • 1Description

The Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Canon is a standard zoom lens designed especially for DSLRs with APS-C-sized image sensors. This lens has a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 27.2-112mm, providing wide-angle to portrait-length angles of view for use in everyday shooting situations.

This lens features a fast f/2.8-4 maximum aperture to help better control your focus plane and to aid in low-light shooting. A built-in Optical Stabilizer also helps in low-light situations by providing a four-stop reduction in the appearance of camera shake, which is ideally suited for macro and telephoto shooting as well. The Hyper Sonic AF Motor delivers fast, smooth, and quiet auto focusing that greatly benefits video applications. The integration of two FLD, one SLD, and three aspherical lenses in the construction helps to reduce the effects of chromatic and chromatic axial aberrations, and Super Multi-Layer coated elements help to increase contrast for sharp, clear imagery.

As part of Sigma's new Contemporary line of lenses, this lens is designed using Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) materials to help reduce the overall weight and size of the lens barrel by about 30% without compromising on optical integrity, rigidity, or overall durability.

For updating lens firmware and fine-tuning its nuances to best-suit your personal shooting, this lens is compatible with the Sigma USB Dock. The dock allows you to specify certain parameters and other settings through the Sigma Optimization Pro software, such as AF speed and focusing limitations.

Contemporary Lens Line
This lens is the first lens produced as part of Sigma's Contemporary line; deeming it lightweight and compact while still exhibiting high optical performance. This lens' wide range of focal lengths makes is suitable for a variety of shooting applications. Utilizing a smaller OS unit and an optimized distribution of optical and electronic elements, the size of the lens barrel is able to be reduced in size by approximately 30%. This reduction in weight is also afforded in part through the use of TSC materials in the barrel construction. This material offers high durability and rigidity but with less bulk than metal components.
Macro Shooting Capabilities
This lens features a maximum magnification of 1:2.8 and a minimum focus distance of 8.7" / 22cm, giving a working distance of just 2.2" / 5.5cm when shooting at the 70mm focal length.
Optimized Lens Construction
Two FLD (F Low Dispersion) glass elements, one SLD (Super Low Dispersion) glass element, and three aspherical glass elements, including a double-sided aspherical lens, are integrated into the lens' construction to help improve overall image quality. The combination of these elements provides a reduction in both chromatic and axial chromatic aberrations throughout the focusing and zoom ranges. A Super Multi-Layer Coating is also applied to lens surfaces to reduce the appearance of lens flare and ghosting, which helps to maintain image contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Hyper Sonic AF Motor
The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) provides fast, quiet, and smooth auto focusing that is well-suited for use with video applications.
Optical Stabilizer
The OS (Optical Stabilizer) system is incorporated into the lens to provide a four-stop-equivalent reduction in the appearance of camera shake. This enables greater handheld shooting possibilities when working in low-lit situations, at longer focal lengths, and when working with macro subjects.
USB Dock
Compatible with Sigma's USB Dock and Sigma Optimization Pro software for fine-tuning your lens' performance, updating its firmware, and better suiting it to your needs.
Other Features
  • A large maximum aperture of f/2.8-4 helps with low-light photography and also offers greater control over your focus plane for selective focus shooting.
  • A brass bayonet mount provides reinforced durability at the connection point between the lens and your camera.

    Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.0 reviews

17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Canon is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 84.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from So many things to like There are so many things to like about this lens. I've been looking for a new walk around lens for a while and I did not have a huge budget. This lens fits the bill. Whenever, I use it, I keep saying to myself, I really like this lens! The lens is well made, does not feel cheap and is fairly light weight. Bokeh is amazing as well and depending on the situation, you can get some nice effects even at F5.6 which I was surprised at. I think my only slight criticism is that occasionally it can be a little slow to focus in tricky lighting or closeups but it's not a major compliant. I would highly recommend this if you can't afford L glass which was the case with myself.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great multi-purpose lens I bought this lens for a few reasons. One, I have been extremely pleased with my purchase of the Sigma 150-600. Two, I needed to upgrade my kit lens focal void, as I sold back my old gear. Three, I have a couple of cameras and when I setup for night shots or star trails, have two wide angle, fast aperture lenses is nice. After using this lens for a little over a month, I have come back with pleasing results to show. This lens has more than paid for itself already! After finding the best spot for infinity manual focus in nightscape shots, I am absolutely thrilled. I have also done portrait and macro work with the lens, and love what it has produced for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens I use this lens for photographing fast paced barrel racers. Most of the time it is in low light indoor arenas. As soon as I started using this lens it greatly improved my images. I am able to shoot with a wider apeture and faster shutter speed to stop down the action. As soon as I put this lens on my T2i I could feel the difference in it and my old lens immediately. The lens is smooth to the touch. I love that. I did at first think that it was not focusing because it is so quiet that I could not hear it. So far I have found nothing that is not great about it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A very good lens for the money I have been looking for a light weight f2.8 lens for use when hiking. I was somewhat dubious but in seeing the reviews on the B&H site, I decided to go for it and I'm happy that I did. The lens, while the housing is made of plastic, has a good heft to it. Also, the zoom ring is easy to rotate, has enough internal tension to prevent creeping. The optics are sharp and I like the macro capability. I don't think a person would go wrong with this as a walk around lens. Also important, the price won't break the bank. It's not a L lens but it met my expectations.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great mid-level lens I fall in the prosumer category. Do a few paid gigs and a lot of personal shooting. I couldn't afford the Canon L lens and think this is the next best option. And it has image stabilization which give me three times the usable shots. Did a shoot yesterday for a client and had used a similar Tokina without IS and had a lot more freehand shots come out with the Sigma. Doing a wedding this weekend and I feel confident that this lens will take care of most of the shots. The only downside is the lens hood must be on absolutely correct or it will show up in the corners of your images. The auto-focus tends to hunt in some situations but for the $ difference I very happy with the Sigma.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens Solid construction with an elegant look. Probably not a professional quality lens, but its not far off (being fixed at 2.8 throughout the zoom range would be awesome). Super quiet, super quick focusing. The business end is very large at 72mm, it kind of throws you off at first, but you will get used to it. I've only had it for about a month, but its been a great replacement for my 18-55 kit lens and I don't see a need for anything else in this focal range (other than prime lens). This is my second Sigma lens and I'm very satisfied with what they did with this model. It's worth your consideration at this price point if you are looking at this focal length, especially with that aperture.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great All Around Lens I bought the lens to replace a Tamron 17-35 that was a good lens. This lens is amazing! Solid build, focuses quickly and the images I get are tack sharp. I love photography, so I am interested in great images, not the technical details. There are plenty of people that do a good job of providing all the specifics. When researching, I saw some complaints about the lens hood being easy to knock off. Mine is fine and I would have to work at it, to lose it. This lens fits well into my lens selection and gives me a nice wide, fast lens that has become my walk around lens. It is a great bargain at the price. I am glad I purchased it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from My Walk About Lense I have used mine for over a year on first a Canon XTi, and now a T5i (both crop sensors). I bought it to replace a Canon 18-85S when it no longer focused with AF on. I use it as my everyday walk about lens. It was durable enough to withstand an impact that shattered the protective UV filter and crack my XTi camera body. If something unexpected happens to this one, I will probably buy another. Note: I usually set my exposure at 1/3 underexposed.
