Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro HSM Contempora... Overview

Mixing a useful zoom range with a sophisticated design, the Pentax K-mount Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro HSM is a Contemporary-series lens, also characterized by its compact, lightweight profile. The bright f/2.8-4 maximum aperture range pairs with the wide-angle to short-telephoto zoom range to create an ideal travel and everyday lens. Also, this zoom sports a high 1:2.8 maximum magnification and 8.7" minimum focusing distance to suit working with close-up subjects.

In terms of handling, a Hyper Sonic Motor is incorporated in the design to provide fast, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. Additionally, the 17-70mm f/2.8-4 features a rounded seven-blade diaphragm for smooth bokeh quality and it is compatible with the optional USB Dock for fine-tuning focusing characteristics and updating its firmware.

As part of the Contemporary line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve a balance between convenience and performance, and meshes a compact, lightweight build and versatile handling with notable optical attributes.
Wide-angle to short-telephoto zoom is designed for APS-C-format Pentax K-mount cameras and provides a 25.5-105mm equivalent focal length range.
Bright f/2.8-4 maximum aperture range is suitable for working in available light conditions and also benefits depth of field control for isolating subject matter.
One Special Low Dispersion (SLD) and two F Low Dispersion (FLD) elements are featured in the optical design and help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy.
Three aspherical elements are used to help limit distortion and spherical aberrations and also contribute to greater overall sharpness and accurate rendering.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Ideal for close-up shooting, this lens offers a 1:2.8 maximum magnification along with a minimum focusing distance of 8.7" to suit working with nearby subjects.
Integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), along with a rear focus system, realizes quick and quiet autofocus, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
Constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations. Additionally, a brass bayonet affords improved mounting accuracy and rigidity.
This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

I bought this lens to replace my beloved Konica Minolta 28-70 f2.8 that was starting to show it's age. It's been a real joy to shot with. Smooth, fast focusing. It's lightweight and compact. And, it's been tack sharp. It goes with me on almost every assignment these days.

Disappointing

Its not a good lens, super basic and unprofessional. It says it opens to 2.8 but that's a complete lie.

Sharpness, color, macro, these are all nice. Mine has an issue with flare and ghosting. Sent it back to Sigma on warranty, but they did'nt find anything wrong, so I have the same issues. For the price I payed, I should have stayed with the kit lens and buy the 55-300mm wr lens.It was $$ in canadian $, not cheap for that kind of problem. So i'm rather disappointed, because sometimes you miss shots for no reason, because the kit lens has no flare issue.Have a nice day.

very sharp !

question

What does the OS setting do. I thought that OS was not available on the Pentax lens, but the switch is prominently there, unless the switch has no function. Also, I have an AF switch on the camera (Pentax K-x) and there is an AF switch on the lens. Do they both have to be on to have auto focus? What happens if one of the switches is on manual focus and the other is on auto focus, will this cause damage?
Asked by: Anonymous
The Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro HSM Lens For Pentax does not have OS. Nor would there be an OS button on the lens. The images on our site are for illustrative purposes only, and it appears we are using a photo of one of the Nikon or Canon mount lenses for all of the other mounts (hence the OS in the photo). We apologize for any confusion this might cause. As for the AF switches, both the switch on the camera and lens would need to be switched to AF in order for AF to function. If one of the switches is on M, then autofocus will not function.

question

Buenas noches, este lente le sirve a una Canon 750D??
Asked by: Angela M.

question

Does this lens work on a Pentax K1?
Asked by: Nicholas B.
This lens can work on a Pentax K1, but since the lens is for an APS-C format Pentax DSLR, you will lose resolution and the image will crop on the K1.

question

If I buy this lens now does it have the new firmware on it? I heard there was a problem with the lens and the Pentax image stabilizations system. I read a firmware update was necessary for this lens.
Asked by: David
The firmware update David D. is referring to is not for the camera, but for the Sigma lens itself. A compatibility problem was discovered earlier this year by members of the 'Pentax Forums' website wherein the focal length setting on the lens was not being delivered to the camera correctly, causing image stabilization errors with the camera's built-in camera shake feature. The result was images being more blurry when shake reduction was turned on (instead of less blurry). Sigma addressed the issue immediately upon being made aware of the problem -- to their great credit -- and corrected the problem via a firmware update (again, for the lens, not the camera). This firmware update needed for some versions of this lens can either be done by Sigma or via the Sigma USB Lens Dock they have available.B&H were made aware of the problem at the same time (Jan. 2015) via the 'Ask B&H Photo' section of the 'Pentax Forums' website by yours truly, but they were unable -- or unwilling -- to contribute anything to fixing the stock they had/have on-hand. Whether or not the current stock of Sigma 17-70mm lenses for Pentax that B&H currently has on-hand already have the updated firmware is a question only they can answer.
