Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Contemp... Overview

Mixing a useful zoom range with a sophisticated design, the Sigma SA-mount Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM is a Contemporary-series lens, also characterized by its compact, lightweight profile. The bright f/2.8-4 maximum aperture range pairs with the wide-angle to short-telephoto zoom range to create an ideal travel and everyday lens. Also, this zoom sports a high 1:2.8 maximum magnification and 8.7" minimum focusing distance to suit working with close-up subjects.

In terms of handling, a Hyper Sonic Motor is incorporated in the design to provide fast, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An Optical Stabilizer also minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. Additionally, the 17-70mm f/2.8-4 features a rounded seven-blade diaphragm for smooth bokeh quality and it is compatible with the optional USB Dock for fine-tuning focusing characteristics and updating its firmware.

As part of the Contemporary line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve a balance between convenience and performance, and meshes a compact, lightweight build and versatile handling with notable optical attributes.
Wide-angle to short-telephoto zoom is designed for APS-C-format Sigma SA-mount cameras and provides a 25.5-105mm equivalent focal length range.
Bright f/2.8-4 maximum aperture range is suitable for working in available light conditions and also benefits depth of field control for isolating subject matter.
One Special Low Dispersion (SLD) and two F Low Dispersion (FLD) elements are featured in the optical design and help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy.
Three aspherical elements are used to help limit distortion and spherical aberrations and also contribute to greater overall sharpness and accurate rendering.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Ideal for close-up shooting, this lens offers a 1:2.8 maximum magnification along with a minimum focusing distance of 8.7" to suit working with nearby subjects.
Integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), along with a rear focus system, realizes quick and quiet autofocus, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
Optical Stabilizer system minimizes the appearance of camera shake to benefit making sharper imagery when shooting handheld.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
Constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations. Additionally, a brass bayonet affords improved mounting accuracy and rigidity.
This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

Aperture issues hobble an otherwise great lens

I bought this for video (EF mount). Every other zoom lens I’ve ever owned could keep a consistent f-stop by stopping down (so f4.0 on the wide end would stay f4.0 throughout the zoom range). Here the aperture changed no matter where I set it. I tried this on native EF mounts and adapted to my GH5s, and it always had that same issue. I like the look of the lens and LOVE the zoom range. If they fixed this or even just released a slower 17-70 with a constant aperture, I’d be all in. As is, I had to sell it.

I have this lens mounted on my Nikon Z50 mirrorless camera. This lens produces photos that are crystal clear and very sharp. For me it’s a great walk around lens, because it’s relatively small and light. This lens will be seeing a lot of use in the near future.

Lots of Potential

I really wanted to love this lens. There are a lot of things that it wants to do. The things I'm going to be grading it on are really the two things that I thought this lens would be good for. Macro, which is in the name, and an all-purpose zoom. Most zooms in this range are only going to be f4, so the fact that his starts faster isn't a bad thing. The problem here is that the autofocus is fundamentally broken for this to be a good all-purpose lens. Because this is mostly designed around being a Macro Lens, the amount of focus given to subjects at non-macro distances isn't very much, meaning that the focus pull from 1 foot to infinity is about an inch. This causes the lens to hunt more than normal, and all but forget about using this lens manually. So then you have to talk about his lens as a Macro lens, of which it just isn't nearly sharp or detailed enough. I honestly would recommend a single purpose Full Frame Macro lens from Sigma to replace this one, as it really isn't very good at either job that you think it would be good for. It is bright. It is ok optically for general use, but the construction also feels cheap enough that I would tell a majority of people to avoid.

This lens is well worth the price. Images are sharp with snappy contrast. Focusing is quick and accurate. I'm really glad I purchased this for my new EOS 90D.

question

Will this lens work on the new sd Quattro camera when it comes out, or will it require an adapter of some kind?
Asked by: Daniel
As both the Sigma sd Quattro Mirrorless Digital Camera and the Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Sigma both use the Sigma SA lens mount, the lens may be used on the camera with no need of a lens adapter.

question

are there adaptors to adapt the Sigma mount lens to other formats such as Sony or Canon?
Asked by: Kevin
The only lens adapter that is manufactured to allow you to connect a Sigma SA-mount lens onto another brand is the Sigma MC-11 Mount Converter/Lens Adapter (Sigma SA-Mount Lenses to Sony E), B&H # SIMC11S, which will allow you to use Sigma SA-mount lenses on the Sony E-mount for their mirrorless cameras. There are no adapters to convert the Sigma SA-mount to any other brand, such as the Canon EF/EF-S mount you list above.

question

Hello, is there any difference with the contemporary one ? As I can see some with that title but not yoursThank you.
Asked by: Anonymous
The Sigma 17-70mm that we carry will be the most recent reincarnation of the model. It features an updated body design. As part of Sigma's new Contemporary line of lenses, this lens is designed using Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) materials to help reduce the overall weight and size of the lens barrel by about 30% without compromising on optical integrity, rigidity, or overall durability.

question

does this lense work in a Canon7D camera?
Asked by: carolina r.
This lens is designed for Sigma mount cameras and will not be compatible with a Canon 7D. You can instead use the 17-70mm f/2.8-4 for Canon: http://bhpho.to/1ditugV
