Nikon 10-100mm f/4.0-5.6 overview

  • 1Description

The silver 1 NIKKOR 10-100mm f/4.0-5.6 VR Lens from Nikon is a compact wide-angle to long-telephoto autofocusing zoom lens for Nikon 1 cameras equipped with the Nikon 1 lens mount. Its 10-100mm focal length is equivalent to 27-270mm in 35mm format. This 10x zoom range allows you to shoot everything from landscapes and group shots to portraits and extreme close-ups. When collapsed, the lens is only 2.8" long.

Built-in Vibration Reduction keeps your images free of blur, even if your hands are unsteady, by compensating for camera shake. The lens contains aspherical elements to eliminate coma and other kinds of lens aberration, and ED glass to enhance sharpness and color correction by minimizing chromatic aberration.

A High Refractive Index expands the number of effects the lens can provide, while compensating for curvature and aberrations. The lens has an Internal Focusing system that lets you focus without altering the size of the lens, enabling a closer focusing distance.

Vibration Reduction
The VR system reduces image blur caused by camera shake, and offers the equivalent of shooting at a shutter speed 3 stops--or 8 times--faster. This enables handheld shooting at dusk, at night, and in poorly-lit interiors. VR also automatically detects when you pan during a shot
Aspherical Lens Elements
The 3 aspherical (AS) elements virtually eliminate the problem of coma and other types of lens aberration, even when used at the widest aperture. They are especially helpful in correcting the distortion at the wide-angle focal lengths of the lens, and also contribute to a lighter and smaller lens design
Extra-low Dispersion Glass
2 ED glass elements improve sharpness and color correction by reducing chromatic aberration. ED glass offers all the benefits with none of the drawbacks of calcium fluorite-based glass. Capture sharp, high-contrast images even at the lens' largest aperture of f/4.0
High Refractive Index
The lens has 3 HRI elements with a refractive index of more than 2.0, so it can offer effects equivalent to those obtained with several normal glass elements. HRI elements also give the lens the power to compensate for field curvature and spherical aberrations, and contribute to the overall compact size
Internal Focusing
The IF system allows you to focus the lens without changing its size. All internal optical movement is limited to the interior of the non-extending lens barrel. This enables a more compact, lightweight construction, in addition to a closer focusing distance. A smaller, lighter focusing lens group is utilized to ensure faster focusing. Minimum focus distance is 1.1' (0.35m) at 10mm focal length, and 2.1' (0.65m) at 100mm.
Rounded Diaphragm
The lens' 7 rounded diaphragm blades allow for attractive bokeh in the out-of-focus regions of the image
Additional Features
Accepts optional screw-on filters with 55mm diameters

    Nikon 10-100mm f/4.0-5.6 reviews

1 NIKKOR 10-100mm f/4.0-5.6 VR Lens (Silver) is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 23.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best Nikkor super zooms This lens is only about .25 inches longer than the 30-110, which I also own, and it's performance is nearly identical, so much so that the 30-100 won't be used again. I've used the 18-200 DX and this lens is superior by leaps and bounds at the long end. I also use the new 24-120 f4 on FX and this lens is just as sharp. There is nothing more I could ask for in this lens' performance, except a bigger aperture but then it wouldn't be so small would it?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This thing is TINY! I purchased the Nikon 1 V3 as a companion camera to my D300s. And the 10-100 lens has a zoom ratio that is pretty close to the reach of the 18-200 on my D300. But the combination is less than half the size of the D300s. The small size must make it easier to engineer great glass, because this lens is sharp! My only complaint is the lens lock button you must push to move the lens from its parked and locked position to the 10-100 range. But in fairness, it does keep the lens from extending while hanging from your shoulder (which my early 18-200 does all the time) and pushing the lock button on the 10-100 lens automatically turns the camera on or off, so the button is no harder to deal with than the on/off button on the camera. I will no doubt get used to it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Good All Purpose Lens It is sharp enough to take it everywhere and shoot just about any subjects with good results. It is not quite as sharp at some of the focal lenths like the 30-110 but close enough to accept it as a good compromise. In the middle of the range 20-50mm gets a little soft towards the corners, but with a little bit of extra sharpening in PS makes it acceptable. All in all I would recommend it but for more critical subject photography I take my 10-30mm and 30-110mm lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent All Around Lens for V2 I use this lens for all around shooting with my Nikon 1 V2. The lens provides the equivalent of a 27mm-270mm in 35mm film terms. It is incredibly sharp at all apertures provides good VR for handheld shots. Build is fantastic and optics are classic Nikkor quality. I bought the optional lens hood for it as well. It mounts in reverse very securely. I highly recommend this lens to any Nikon 1 owners.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for walking around I'm a travel photographer. I find the compact, light-weight Nikon 1 system great for on-the-go shooting and discreet street photography. The V2 offers a huge improvement in ergonomics and functionality over the V1. The 10-100 offers a magnification range that makes it my go-to lens. The image quality is better than I expected when I compare results from the 18-200 on a D300. Simply put, the 10-100 produces stunning images. Nikon makes the lens with lots of metal with a heft I didn't expect. Some users may notice the extra weight when compared to the 30-110. It also has a larger diameter and length than the 30-110. But what impressed me the most was the smooth action of the zoom; like operating a precision machine tool. The action reminded me of the front and rear standard and rail adjustments of a Sinar 4x5 camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little Nikon 1 lens THis is a great little all-around, walk-around lens. Its effective (35mm) focal length is 27 - 270mm which covers just about any need on the street in good light. The unlocking/extension function slows me down a little, but also turns the camera on an off saving time there. A faster aperture would enable it in lower-light application, but the f/4 characteristic is more than enough to gather daylight for good photos.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Let me add to my previous post I need to also mention that the VR system seems to work, up to a point. I really don't know how my hand compares with others. In the V2 menu Active VR is selected by default. With a lot of concentration and a slow exhale, elbows tight against my body, shutter release below the lens, I could hand hold at moderate telephoto down to about 1/25 second. At slower shutter speeds and I started to see evidence of camera shake and obvious subject motion. At short focal lengths at speeds as slow as 1/8 second I could get sharp results about 1 out of three shots. I haven't had the opportunity to try the lens at dusk or at night. The sample shots here are too small to see they are shake-free.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lens to accompany the 1V3 I bought a Nikon 1V3 for fast action daytime sports/action shots. The kit lens just didn't have enough reach to it,so it then became a choice of getting the 10-100m or the 70-300m lens. I got the 10-100m lens and man am I ever pleased with it. I'm a DSLR user, and geez do I ever get tired of swapping lenses. For my 1V3 I wanted a do it all lens that I can leave on the camera with confidence, and the 10-100m lens is just right. The lens-and camera- passed the first real tests I had in mind for them. I shoot a team of frisbee-dogs (and of course their trainers). This is as high-action as it gets, and I've shot them in the past with my DSLR and appropriate lenses. The combination of the 1V3 and this lens yielded fantastic results. Second test was a bird-rookery nearby, which is very popular with photographers. Here also the action is fast and you've got to be quick if you want to catch the various birds in-flight. There were probably 25 photographers there when I pulled up. They were all wrestling with their heavy units as the wood storks and egrets went whizzing by, while I was able to be much more nimble with my 1V3 and this lens. Upon reviewing my shots at home, I am extremely pleased with this lens. The big thing with the 1V3 and this lens is the blisteringly fast autofocus. It's FAST, people.
