Panasonic HC-X920 overview

  • 1Description

The Panasonic HC-X920 3MOS Ultrafine Full HD Camcorder features three back-illuminated MOS sensors (3MOS) with an effective size of approximately 1/4" each and records Full HD 1080/60p video in the AVCHD format. The 12x Leica Dicomar zoom lens has a fast max aperture of f/1.5 and a 35mm equivalent of approximately 29.8-399.2mm, and the optical zoom is supplemented by an 25x Intelligent Zoom. Built-in Wi-Fi enables real time streaming and remote control via a smartphone or tablet. Other features include a 3.5" LCD touchscreen monitor, Five Axis Hybrid OIS, 5.1-channel surround sound, and iA Plus Mode.

Three 1/2.3" MOS Sensors with BSI
The imaging system features three MOS sensors with back-side illumination (BSI) and a total size of 1/2.3" each. Of this total size, the camera uses approximately a 1/4" portion of the entire sensor to accommodate Panasonic's existing prism system. This means the effective sensor size for the camera is approximately 1/4". This effective size yields a 35mm equivalent focal length of 29.8 to 399.2mm.
Leica Dicomar Lens
The fast, f/1.5 lens features a Nano Surface Coating that suppresses ghosting and flare when shooting moving pictures, and let you record bright images with very little noise even in dark places. The lens has a 12x optical zoom ratio, which is further extended by a 25x Intelligent Zoom.
Crystal Engine Pro II
The ultra-high speed Crystal Engine Pro II can process a huge number of pixels – approximately equivalent to four times the pixel count of Full-HD – which enables pixel shift technology for superb Full-HD image quality.
Live Channel Video Streaming
The built-in Wi-Fi function enables real time broadcasting of important events via Ustream. This lets you deliver live images to people with Internet access around the world. There is also a function to send e-mail to notify the start of broadcasting to preregistered e-mail addresses.
Remote Shooting and Home Monitoring
The dedicated Panasonic Image App allows users to remotely zoom In/Out, activate record Start/Stop, check audio recording and view the live image on a smartphone or tablet. The HC-X920 can be used as a home monitor, allowing you can monitor and record live video using your smartphone or tablet, even when you are away from home.
3.5" Touchscreen LCD Monitor
The 3.5" LCD features 1,152,000 dot resolution and intuitive fingertip touch-operation. When shooting, you can activate the shutter simply by touching a fingertip on the screen. For playback, you can also change thumbnail pages by sliding a fingertip across the screen.
Electronic View Finder
This extendable, 263,424 dot equivalent viewfinder is easy to use and convenient for focusing and other adjustments. The EVF makes it easy to see the scene under bright sunlight.
5-Axis HYBRID O.I.S. +
5-Axis HYBRID O.I.S. + thoroughly suppresses blurring over the entire shooting range. This makes it possible to capture crisp, clear images with reduced blur in almost every shooting situation.
iA and Scene Modes
iA (Intelligent Auto) senses the shooting conditions and automatically adjusts settings for optimal results. iA makes the bothersome settings for you and makes it easy to capture beautiful, well-focused images. Scene modes include Sports, Portrait, Low Light (motion image only), Spot Light, Snow, Beach, Sunset, Fireworks, Scenery, Night Scenery, Night Portrait (still image only), and Soft Skin Mode.
Creative Control
Four filter effects - Miniature Effect, 8mm Movie, Silent Movie and Time Lapse Recording - further enhance expressive capabilities. The filter results can be checked on the LCD while shooting. This makes it possible to shoot impressive video recordings that are matched to the shooting situation.
5.1-Channel Surround Sound
The HC-X920 is equipped with multiple electret condenser microphones for a realistic sound space to match true-to-life HD images. Other audio features include Wide mode, 12x Zoom Mic mode, Focus Mic mode and a Wind Noise Canceller.
Manual Control Ring and Focus Assist
The manual ring gives you easy, fingertip control over the iris, focus, zoom and exposure settings. You'll find using the ring is a much more intuitive, comfortable, user-friendly process than accessing a menu screen. In addition, Focus Assist supports manual adjustments by displaying blue outlines around subjects that are in-focus. You can easily check the focus on the LCD monitor when focusing manually, to ensure sharp images.
Optional 3D Conversion Lens
By mounting the VW-CLT2 3D Conversion Lens (sold separately) you can record FULL HD 3D images with the Multiview Video Coding recording system of the AVCHD 3D format. Right-eye and left-eye images are both recorded and played in Full-HD quality, using the Frame Sequential Method to produce FULL HD 3D images.
2D to 3D Conversion
2D images can be easily transformed into 3D images with the 2D to 3D Conversion function. Simply connect the camcorder to a 3D-compatible TV with an HDMI cable. The 2D to 3D Conversion function then uses the image processing capability of the engine to convert 2D images into 3D.
Level Gauge and Level Shot Function
The built-in Level Gauge helps users correct slight tilting that can be difficult to see with the naked eye. In addition, the Level Shot Function automatically detects and corrects the tilting of captured images. It corrects tilt even if when shooting in an unstable or awkward position such as low-angle or high-angle shooting.
20.4MP Still Photographs
Still Picture Recording mode lets you shoot with a maximum resolution of 20.4 megapixels.
Highlight Playback and Easy Share
You can enjoy Highlight Playback with a smartphone or tablet right after shooting. Favorite scenes can be shared on SNS with simple drag and drop operation.
Wireless TV Playback
An Access Point at home can be used to transfer data wirelessly to a compatible TV or a tablet in the living room, kitchen or other rooms in the home.
Pre-Rec Function
This smart function records three seconds of video even before you actually begin shooting. Before recording begins, the images are held in temporary, internal memory. This helps ensure that you won't miss the start of a moment you want to record, such as when an event begins all of a sudden.
Color Night Rec
Color Night Rec captures images with color even in dim lighting (1 lux).
A Variety of Interfaces
A mini jack on the side of the camcorder enables the use of an external microphone (sold separately), and the accessory shoe provides an interface for optional accessories. There is also a headphone jack, which allows you to monitor audio recordings or playback recorded footage with greater privacy.
Plug and Copy to External HDD
Recorded data can be easily copied to an HDD without having to use a PC.
Auto Ground-Directional Standby
The O.I.S. linear motor system can detect when the camera is in an unusual shooting position and automatically stops recording, saving both battery power and media storage space. This can be helpful if the user inadvertently engages the recording mode. Of course, this can feature can also be deactivated when necessary.
HD Writer
HD Writer software, included with the camcorder, makes it easy to play or edit videos on your PC and have more fun when the shooting's done. The Short Movie Story function makes it possible to transform still images and videos into dramatic short videos. Once the still images/videos, a theme, and background music are selected, the software takes over to automatically produce the movie. It's easy to add titles, rearrange scenes, provide transition effects, and edit images in single frame units.

    Panasonic HC-X920 reviews

HC-X920 3MOS Ultrafine Full HD Camcorder is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 62.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great image, fair ergonomics Using this primarily to record gymnastics competitions. I've been able to create stunning videos (razor sharp clarity, beautiful, accurate colors) under challenging conditions (dim fluorescent lighting, fast action, long distances to the subject). Given my experience so far, I'd definitely buy the same camera again. The ergonomics are not great. You have to open the hinged monitor to access the power switch. There is a dedicated shutter release for still photos on top, right next to and easily confused with the zoom rocker. The menus are clunky to access and non-intuitive. Despite these quibbles, it's an excellent camcorder and we'll worth the price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does not work well with iMovie It was not obvious from the product descriptions, and no one else mentioned it, that this camera will only upload to iMovie in a mode called iFrame. iFrame disables all creative options. You can only shoot straight video with no effects, not even time lapsed or B&W. It seems like a decent camera other than that. The touch screen has a great picture and the extendable viewfinder is nice with a great picture as well. Touch screen and view finder pictures better than Canon Vixia series but I cannot use 80% of the camera functions. B&H allowed the return (Thanks guys!). The creative functions are more limited than the Canon's and only 1 SD card slot on this camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great All Around I reviewed the specs of several camcorders - well, three anyway - and I came to realize specs weren't the ultimate measure of satisfaction. I looked at some comparison videos on YouTube, and I was impressed with the imagery I saw. Not any one camcorder is perfect in all respects, but this one had the best balance of performance and features, hands down. There are a few little quirky things that will take some practice, but a little fiddling with the unit will iron all that out. Great low light performance, no vertical burst artifacts, and great dynamic range. And as always, B&H is a great supplier. I like it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from HC-X920 plus and minus This is early in the game of reviewing the product. I had a top of the line Sony consumer HD camera for 5 years bought from B & H which I used to death. On early use I found the zoom on this camera hard to get a gradual zoom. Having no internal hard drive necessitates a chip which caused an annoying delay for the photo to write to the chip. I was told I could buy a faster chip that should eliminate the delay. The overall quality of the camera both video and photo wise seems fine and I look forward to getting used to the various functions. The ability to use smartphone tech as control is fun. Compared to what is out there in its price range I feel it is still a very good value in its class.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Camera! The HC-X920 has, so far, been an excellent addition to our lineup at church. It is easy to use, records beautifully, and will allow us to expand. I hope to take advantage of the ease and beauty to create some nice promo videos for our upcoming sermon series. One point of note--I did not realize the default format was proprietary to Panasonic. It doesn't translate to Apple unless you switch to the apple formatting which is a lesser quality and does not allow you to do some of the really advanced stuff. That's okay but I wish I would have known more about that on the front end.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Recommended for any level What I really like about the camera is the 3 cmos sensor. Great color and crisp images. This camera is simple to use and the o.i.s is really great for handheld. I like the 5.1 surround sound, I think its a lot better than most built in mics, but plugging in a microphone always works better. Low light, eh. Its good but you get some noise. I am really disappointed in the video format options, you can only shoot at 60p/i. For the price it should be capable of variable formats, such as 30 and 24. The touch screen is a major plus though and the overall design and weight is really nice. It seems to be quality made. We (my school) used this from pictures to recording plays and I think it does very well. Good camera, you won't be disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Camcorder Very Happy This camcorder has fantastic picture quality and I researched it for 5-6 weeks before I made my purchase. I must have looked at 25-30 YouTube videos and read every review there was. I also looked at the Canon G20 and G30 along with the Sony. The lag people mention with the automatic color balance has a simple remedy. Turn the camera on about 5 seconds before you start recording and no problem. It has a diopter adjustment on the viewfinder and also a color balance quick adjust on the LCD screen to warm up some scenes like walking through the woods or near water. The menus are very easy to use and respond quickly. There are several presets for snow, beach, night, etc and the ones I've used so far work great. I am very happy with this camera and for the price I don't think it any camcorder in existence could touch it. B&H, as usual, shipped it very fast and very well packed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stunning performance just terrific. I ordered two of these for an inportant low light night club gig recording in 3D. I already have paired rigs with the earlier TM700 and TM900 camcorders optically synced. The x920 is simply awesome. Excellent low light performance, amazing sharp detail, and stunningly good colour. AND .. the image stabilisation is just breathtaking. SO good in fact, that two cameras mounted on the same baseplate will track motion with 3D precision. No inter-camera shift under the most difficult of steady shot circumstances. Goodbye Steadicam! The Wifi is a bit awkward, and of course there is NO REMOTE! You have to rely on an 'app' on your Android or iPhone. Not exactly suited to a semi broadcast situation, and when a camcorder is this good .. that's where it will end up. As a broadcast trained cameraman and engineer, now shooting for 3D .. this is just beyond amazing. Panasonic have simply blown me away .... stunning stunning stunning. OH! .. and I should mention that it captures gorgeous 5.1 sound even at high sound levels .. which the earlier camcorders couldn't - they overloaded at the mic stage. Take a look .... http://youtu.be/DSMd7zILOPI TK ... Broadcast3D.tv
