Panasonic DMC-TS5 Overview

  • 1Description

The orange Lumix DMC-TS5 Digital Camera from Panasonic is a Wi-Fi enable "tough" compact camera that can shoot both photos and Full HD video on land and underwater. A 16.1MP High Sensitivity MOS sensor provides high quality imaging and fast autofocus. A Leica DC Vario-Elmar lens offers focal lengths from wide-angle to telephoto at 28-128mm in 35mm format. Full HD 1080p is available at 60 or 30 frames per second with a dedicated one-touch button and built-in stereo microphone. Power O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilization) compensates for camera shake and offers clear images in low light or when shooting telephoto. Intelligent Auto (iA) Mode is available for simple point and shoot capability and Scene Mode provides predefined adjustments to shoot certain types of scenes (Sunset, Panorama, Night Scenery, etc.) with the ideal camera settings. The camera also features manual exposure control, time-lapse shooting and continuous burst shooting up to 10 frames per second at full resolution.

A 3.0" TFT LCD screen with 460k-dot resolution and anti-reflective coating provides composition and playback viewing. The TS5's compact and "grippable" design with raised buttons makes one hand shooting and adjustments easy. One touch video, Wi-Fi and playback buttons are ideal for the type of activity this camera is meant to document.

Built-in Wi-Fi enables you to send images to your smart phone or tablet with one touch. The TS5 also offers Near Field Communication (NFC) to connect with a compatible Wi-Fi device by simply tapping the two together. The Lumix Remote app must be downloaded to your smart phone or tablet to wirelessly connect with the TS5, but the app also allows your phone to be used as a remote control for your camera and offers cloud storage for your images, which can be important when shooting in locations where getting to your computer may be difficult. Built-in GPS functionality allows for geo-tagging of your images.

The tough features of the TS5 allow it to go pretty much anywhere your adventures take you. It is waterproof to a depth of 43' (13.1 m), shockproof from a drop height of 6.5' (2 m), freeze proof to a temperature of 14ºF (-10ºC) and pressure resistant to 220 lbs. It also offers anti-fog protection for its lens.

16.1MP Sensor and Venus Engine Image Processor
A new 16.1MP high sensitivity MOS Sensor offers high quality imaging even in low light conditions and the Venus Engine Image Processor provides fast performance in extreme conditions.
Leica DC Vario-Elmar Lens
A 4.6x optical zoom lens provides 35mm focal length equivalents of 28-128mm which ranges from wide-angle to telephoto. This incorporates most shooting situations and a 9.3x Intelligent Zoom will reach even further if needed. The maximum aperture at the wide-angle end is f/3.3. The lens is designed from 10 elements in 8 groups and includes 5 aspherical lenses and 1 extra-low dispersion lens for sharp images and reduced aberrations.
Waterproof and Tough Features
The TS5 is waterproof to a depth of 43' (13.1 m), shockproof from a drop height of 6.5' (2 m), freeze proof to a temperature of 14ºF (-10ºC) and pressure resistant to 220 lbs. It is also dustproof/sand proof and features anti-fog glass in its lens.
Full HD 1080 Video with Dedicated Button
Full HD 1080 video recording at 60 or 30 frames per second in the AVCHD format and a stereo microphone allow you to shoot high quality movies on land or underwater. A dedicated button switches you immediately into video mode and both Intelligent Auto (iA) and POWER Optical Image Stabilization (O.I.S) is available for video.
Wi-Fi Connectivity
With the Lumix Remote app installed on your smart phone or device, the TS5 provides one-touch connection to Wi-Fi with Near Field Communication (NFC). This allows for remote picture capture, quick upload, cloud storage and easy sharing.
3.0" LCD Display
Composition and playback are viewed with a 3.0" TFT Screen LCD display with 460,000 pixel resolution. It provides 100% field of view and offers Power Monitor Mode and AUTO Power Monitor Mode. An anti-reflective coating is applied to the screen for easier viewing in direct sunlight, this is particularly useful when using the camera while skiing or at the beach.
Optical Image Stabilization
POWER O.I.S, in both photo and video modes, compensates the effects of handshake even when using the high powered zoom. This will provide you with clearer images in low light and when shooting at telephoto lengths.
Aspect Ratios
The TS5 can shoot in four distinct aspect ratios, each with various resolution levels. Its native ratio is 4:3, but it also shoots in 3:2, 16:9 and 1:1.
Underwater Mode

    Panasonic DMC-TS5 Reviews

Lumix DMC-TS5 Digital Camera (Orange) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 96.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid Performance - Great Price Point This camera has very little shutter-lag that many point and shoot cameras do. That is a significant advantage over competitiors. The feel and balance of the camera are very good for those times you need to hold the camera for a very long time - such as the 4th grade play. The configuration settings are easy to understand but the Lumix auto-everyhting is robust and you rarely need to switch to manual Fast and efficiet focusing. WIFI and GPS features have turned out to be surprisingly useful. The one con is the LCD screen in bright sunlight, but every other camera has that same issue. The B&H price point made this my choice over the competitiors

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A nice robust camera when the SLR is not Haven't read the full manual yet because I am travelling without a CD drive in the computer and have not yet used it underwater and that is what I bought it for. Great for panoramas but be aware that panoramas will have a relatively small file size (500 kB to about 1.5 MB for most of mine). Has a neat function that detects backlit scenes and takes multiple shots it automatically merges into a better pic. I find the menus not very user friendly so study of the manual might be useful. A control to reduce the exposure is not easy to access and I tend to use that a lot. LCD needs the daylight setting to be easy to view outdoors. Buy a spare battery or two.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good for the price. I have not tested this camera underwater yet but the above water performance appears to be good as respects various shooting situations. I thought the low light performance was a little deficient when compared too my Canon 100S but that camera costs about double. There is a nag screen every time the camera is powered up reminding you to close the battery compartment. This is annoying especially if you want to get a quick shot. Maybe there is some way to defeat this warning but I have not found it yet. The main reason I picked this camera was the special filter for underwater photography. I hope it works when I submerge off Kona HI next month.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Camera Died after 5 snorkeling shots After doing a great deal of research I chose this Panasonic DMC-TS5. My primary interest was with underwater pictures. After taking 5 shots the camera died. I was on a month long vacation on the Mexican Caribbean with no underwater camera! To add insult to injury Panasonic was going to make me pay for shipping the camera to them! What a joke, I only had it for 5 weeks. It took up a good 3 hours of my time dealing with them. After making enough noise they contacted my three days later and agreed to pay the shipping.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent for what it is Great for a point-and-shoot. Buttons and controls are straightforward, and quick-menu provides easy access to the advanced controls when I want them. LCD screen is superb, super bright and clear and easy to compose with, even in bright outdoor conditions. Photos are excellent out-of-camera; bright and crisp and generally well exposed. Photos get soft rapidly if you try to enlarge, but its a tiny sensor after all. I find the body a bit slippery to handle, and in fact am considering gluing tacky rubber onto some of the gripping surfaces, but this is the only thing I can find to complain about.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great intro camera for underwater I bought this camera for a diving vacation. While I had to leave it on the boat for deep dives, it worked great on shallow dives. I did a lot of research before purchasing. It seemed I had to choose between price, waterproof depth, and image quality. I didn't want to spend more than $ on a camera for diving, and I didn't want a camera that could go down 180 ft, but only get me pics with poor image quality. After discussing it over with a B&H employee who's also a diver, I decided to go with the Lumix TS5 over the Nikon AW110 . She said she loves Nikon, but that she just hadnt been happy with the image quality on Nikons for underwater photography. The Nikon does get you a few feet deeper, but a 5 foot difference doesnt really matter if the pictures are poor.I got some truly great shots below and above water. The battery just made it through 2 1-hour dives per charge. I'd highly recommend this camera for this price point. Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good little camera I bought this camera after first buying the Olympus TG-850 and being incredibly disappointed by the image quality. The image quality on the Panasonic is a lot better - still not DSLR-like, but I wasn't expecting that. Things that have impressed me about the Panasonic so far are the burst shooting mode, and the clarity of underwater pictures. I'm also very satisfied with the 1080/60p video mode. I'm not planning to use the camera in low light, and I haven't yet gotten a chance to try out the Wifi or the iPhone app, so I can't comment on those aspects of the camera. I wish the lens was a little wider, and even though image quality is acceptable it could be better, but overall I'm happy with my purchase.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great dive photo results After a dive master used this camera (with an Ikelite housing) in Maui to take pictures of our dive, I decided to give it a try and buy one for our next dive trip. I purchased the Ikelite housing and used an external UFL-2 Strobe. The picture quality and clarity was equal to or better than photos taken on the same dive with cameras that were priced at 4 times as much as this Lumix TS-5. Not a lot of manual settings, but for high quality, minimal input photographs, this was a nice, compact choice. I did not use it outside of the housing while in the water, even though it is water proof.
