LaCie 9000317 overview

  • 1Description

The 8TB 2Big Quadra USB 3.0 2-Bay RAID from LaCie features 5Gb/s max uplink and downlink speeds to transfer your data quickly and efficiently. Connect this hard drive array via either one of the two integrated FireWire 800/400 ports or the USB 3.0 port. Everything within the aluminum enclosure is kept cool with a heat sink chassis design, a redesigned fan, and jumbo heat exhausts.

Take advantage of a variety of RAID modes including the preconfigured RAID 0 as well as RAID 1. The preconfigured RAID 0 mode provides zero redundancy with improved performance. In this configuration a single failure destroys the entire array. RAID 1 provides mirroring without parity or striping. Data is written identically to two drives, thereby producing a "mirrored set" ensuring data backup and security.

Enhanced Data Transfer Speed
With USB 3.0 and UAS compatibility, the LaCie 2big Quadra delivers optimized performance for PC and Mac. Its two 7200rpm professional hard disks come preconfigured in RAID 0 providing up to 210MB/s data transfer speeds on PCs or late-model Macs. The hardware RAID controller ensures sustained performance and prevents dropped frames.
Universal Connectivity for Compatibility
Don't let your project get derailed by external drive/computer incompatibility. With its multiple interfaces, the LaCie 2big Quadra is the perfect match for any Mac or PC. If your computer is compatible with USB 3.0 or FireWire 800, you should use those ports for best performance. But thanks to backwards compatibility with USB 2.0 and FireWire400 you can connect the LaCie 2big Quadra to nearly any standard computer of any era.
Comprehensive Data Protection
The LaCie 2big Quadra features RAID 1 and hot-swappable disks, so your data is kept safe even if a drive fails. Simply swap in a new disk without switching off the device. You also won't lose any data if, during a file transfer, someone trips over the interface or power cable. The LaCie 2big Quadra's cable management system keeps all of the cables safely connected to the enclosure. You can also backup your entire workstation with professional backup software that lets you perform file-level and even system-level backup and restore.
Dual Cooling System
The dual cooling system found within the LaCie 2big Quadra enclosure consists of three key components: a heat-dissipating aluminum casing, a completely redesigned fan, and jumbo heat exhausts. For the enclosure, its solid-aluminum heat sink design provides 60% more surface area than flat designs, diverting and dissipating heat more efficiently. Its new magnetic levitation fan generates zero vibration or friction. The dual cooling system pulls heat away from the internal components while being 50% quieter than previous generations. The fan is also thermo-regulated, so it controls its speed according to the ambient temperature.
Convenient Design
With a space-saving design the LaCie 2big Quadra can be positioned alone vertically thus reducing its footprint on your desktop. Neatly stack it with the LaCie 2big Desk Rack or standard 19" Rackmount Kit. You can also set up email alerts enabling remote monitoring of the device before potential problems escalate. Changing the RAID mode is convenient thanks to two-step Easy RAID configuration. The integrated Eco mode puts the hard disks to sleep after a period of interactivity. This prevents overheating and controls power usage.

    LaCie 9000317 reviews

    8TB 2Big Quadra USB 3.1 Gen 1 2-Bay RAID is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! Great RAID 1 drive. I'm a music producer and, for my job, I need a lot of storage space and I need it to be reliable. The LaCie 8TB 2Big Quadra seems perfect for the job. I have to have old audio sessions (that are several GB each) available for years after I've finished working on them in case the client requires one of the files again, which is very common. The 2Big Quadra got great reviews online and I have to agree. Easy to set up, just put the CD in and follow the instructions. Comes with 3 free backup/file management softwares too. You can choose it to be RAID 0 or RAID 1 just by flipping a switch on the back of the drive. A lot of good info and support on their website too if needed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does what it says I was very pleased with the ease with setting it up. Even though I had to reformat for Windows, the instructions were pretty simple. I thought it was going to be harder and I called customer service for help. I didn't really need them after all but was happy with how quickly they got to me and how the representative wanted to help even though I got it done. An added bonus that I didn't expect was the Genie Backup Manager. Wow! This was an awesome plus to back up my data regularly that I'm not even saving to the LaCie system. Definitely recommend it. (for now...it's been about a month and I'm still thrilled)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Solid Performing Product As a profesional photographer in the sciences, I must depend upon backing up files. Previously, I have been using Just a Mess of Drives (as opposed to JBOD). All were written independently. Over time this became a nightmare and unmanageable in a reasonable manner. So I went with a RAID solution for security of all files. Many of my independent drives were LaCie and had been very dependable, so I invested in the 2Big Quadra. I can say I am honestly exceptionally satisfied with my desision. While time intensive, original transfer of files was very straight forward. Transfer rates are reasonable with USB 3.0. While some users prefer the speed of RAID O, I want complete redundanty in my system. LaCie delivers just that, plus the all important peace of mind. As a teacher, I now recommend this storage solution to those needing secure back up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally, great speed... ! I had two WD external drives before, one USB 2.0, and one Ethernet connection. They both worked but not fast at all. Along comes the more pricey but robust LaCie 8TB (!) drive and guess what? Using USB 3.0 and being a LaCie, man this drive is FAST and works like a million bucks! I have it set for RAID 1 so am only seeing 4TB, but that is what I wanted. Did have to give LaCie a call because it would not show up on the computer. They walked me through going to Disk Management (Windows PC) and it needed to be formatted. This was only a minor annoyance. They should give rookies better instructions. Anyway, this drive is so smooth and fast that I don't think of it as being an external drive. It's operation, boot up, and everything is fast and seamless. Shows up as drive H on my computer and it is sweet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from With 3 year warranty you can't go wrong! I use these drives and their thunderbolt versions for editing a film that is almost 6Tb in footage. I wouldn't choose another brand. Rarely needed service, but when I have, customer support and turn around times are top rate.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fabulous Back Up System for the Mac! I use this product as my main back-up and with the size and speed, it is the ultimate! I can retrieve if necessary, and can't say enough about it. The IT staff at B&H really helped me choose this product and I am extremely happy! Thanks so much for the advice and help.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Company That Still Cares About Backward Compatibility! Late January, 2018: One of my older external drives used for offline archiving decided it was time to bid me farewell. Later that evening: While contemplating my ridiculously extensive JBOD array of 12-year-old (and older) external drives managed with a clunky but really secure incremental manual backup strategy, I thought that maybe it was time to migrate my digital archives to fewer larger capacity backup devices. The challenge was to find a solution that would be compatible with several older but still useful legacy desktop systems. My first inclination was to go for a network-attached storage solution, since I maintain a couple of 8TB NAS drives as personal cloud storage, one for online working/backup storage and the other for offline "cold storage" archiving (I’m a firm adherent of redundant archiving). However, I quickly found that the current crop of NAS choices aren’t compatible with the operating system running on the legacy equipment, which totally blew an efficient local cloud storage strategy. Given my consistently positive past experience over the course of nearly two decades with LaCie Quadra and Quadra D2 external hard drives, I turned to LaCie’s 2Big RAID drive line. B&H came through with an unbeatable price for the 8TB 2Big Gen 1 option, providing the budgetary headroom for me to spring for a pair, which I plan to use in RAID 1 (mirrored) mode. I had both drives up and running within less than 15 minutes after unpacking them, as they came preconfigured for MacOS, RAID 0 (spanned) mode. Changing to RAID 1 was accomplished without fanfare by simply flipping a switch on the back panel. As with all La Cie Quadras, these big boys are fast and quiet, and heat dissipation from the metal casing is very efficient. Although 4 months of use isn’t a rock-solid benchmark for objective evaluation of reliability, I’ve awarded the LaCie 8TB 2Big Quadra USB 3.1 Gen 1 2-Bay RAID five stars based on my past positive experiences with the LaCie Quadra line.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works Fine - RAID Setup Leaves Much To Be Desired The disks work fine, I am using USB-3 and they perform well. Mostly photo and video files. I am using a Manual Raid system, copying files to the two disks manually because the RAID setup simply would not work. This actually works better for the way I am using the storage.
