Nikon 7578 overview

  • 1Description

Improving on their Monarch 3 design, and representing the highest magnification within the 42mm series, Nikon's black 12x42 Monarch 5 Binocular benefits from upgrades to the glass and optical coatings to improve image quality with the same focus on comfort and performance the Monarch line is known for.

Featuring extra-low dispersion glass elements with anti-reflection fully multi-coated optics and highly reflective dielectric-coated and phase-corrected roof prisms, the Monarch 5 produces bright and clear high-contrast images with accurate color rendition and minimal color fringing. Its powerful 12x magnification allows users to make detailed observation of distant subjects, while the generous field of view helps to minimize the appearance of hand shake that is common when holding high-power optics such as this. The 42mm objectives not only boost its light-gathering ability to improve views in challenging light, but also help to offset the dimming that is often associated with observing at long ranges at magnifications over 10x. With the combination of glass, prisms, optical coatings, and a comfortable eye relief, users can enjoy an easy observational experience in most lighting conditions.

Complementing the optical performance are construction details that make this binocular durable and comfortable to use. It has a lightweight and durable reinforced polycarbonate ATB chassis and is protected by rubberized armor that is accented with indented palm rests to give it a secure non-slip grip. The optical tubes are nitrogen filled and O-ring sealed to be waterproof and resistant to internal fogging when moving through extreme temperature variations and environmental conditions. A one-piece ocular rainguard covers the eyecups as the binocular hangs around the neck and prevents rain and spraying water from filling them, and the objective lens caps are also tethered to keep them safe from being lost on the forest floor. This version of the Monarch 5 is offered here in subdued black, so it won't draw notice wherever it is used.

Optical Performance
  • Powerful 12x magnification allows for detailed observation of distant subjects
  • 42mm objective lenses improve light-gathering ability and help to offset the dimming of the view that often accompanies high-power optics when viewing at long range
  • Roof prism light path ensures optical tubes remain thin for a compact form factor
  • Extra low-dispersion glass reduces chromatic and spherical aberrations for increased contrast, improved color rendition, and sharpness without distortion across the entire field of view
  • Phase-corrected prism coatings reduce internal interference to improve light transmission, contrast, and resolution
  • Anti-reflection fully multi-coated optics maximize light transmission across the entire visible spectrum for accurate color rendition and improved contrast and clarity
  • Highly reflective dielectric prism multi-layer coatings boost internal reflection to >99% to maintain image brightness and improve contrast and clarity
  • 262' field of view at 1000 yards
Use and Handling
  • Closed-bridge configuration provides a solid and stable platform for the internal focusing mechanism
  • Large slip center focus wheel allows for precise focus control, even while wearing gloves
  • Right eye dioptric adjustment collar helps to compensate for individual eye prescription
  • 56-72mm interpupillary distance range allows easy use by a wide variety of people
  • Twist-up/click-stop rubber eyecups for use with or without eyewear
  • Tripod mountable with optional adapter for hands-free use
  • Comfortable 15.1mm eye relief helps to reduce eyestrain and improves viewing comfort
  • 3.5mm exit pupil
Construction Details
  • Environmentally friendly Eco-Glass is made without lead or arsenic
  • Lightweight and durable fiberglass-reinforced polycarbonate chassis
  • Chassis material is temperature resistant, preventing the expansion and contraction that is common with metal, which can cause the optical components to move out of alignment over time and prevent sharp focus
  • Textured protective rubber armoring provides a slip-resistant grip, especially in cold and wet weather
  • Indents on the sides of the optical tubes are ergonomically placed where the hands naturally fall for a more comfortable feel in the hand and a more secure grip
  • Nitrogen filled and O-ring sealed to be waterproof and resistant to internal fogging when moving through extreme temperature changes and environmental conditions
  • Black coloring allows it to remain inconspicuous in all environments
  • One-piece tethered ocular rainguard protects eyecups from water pooling in them from rain or spraying water when hanging from the neck
  • Tethered fold-down objective lens caps prevents losing them during observation sessions
  • Weight: 21 ounces

Nikon 7578 reviews

12x42 Monarch 5 Binocular (Black) is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the move from 10 to 12 power. So happy to have made the choice of the 12x42 over the 10x42. We have a Monarch 10x42 and love them but after 3 days for whale watching in Carmel, CA this week, the difference is well worth the slight increase in weight. Mostly used for wildlife observation. Sturdy, quick to focus, crisp and the newer lense covers are great - no more dropping them on the hike!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This one makes good sense I never have any price range in mind when buying a new product, so I check full range of options from Chevy to Cadillac then determine proper price range. I've bought this binocular as a gift for my wife who loves to watch birds, squirrels, raccoons and other animals in our backyard and beyond - in the woods. I went to store and tested several models arriving on this one for the following reasons: - The image quality is very close to $1000 models - 12x magnification makes quite a difference in comparison with 10x Monarch 5 while the price difference is minimal. - All other essential features are there: multicoated optics, rubber coat, fogproof, light weight. - The only other binocular I would consider is with stabilizer that runs $1200 and up. However, for the purpose I've mentioned 12x Monarch 5 seems the best. 5 stars would be for binocular with stabilizer, bur again, not worth for our purpose. One more thing: I usually go to local store, check the product then buy online for less.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Get this 12x Nikon Monarch 5 I tested about seven Nikon and Canon binoculars in person. This was clearly the best. I thought I'd prefer 8x power or 10x power. But this 12x Monarch 5 was clearly about the Monarch 7 8x power in terms of resolving details at distance. I have about 60 world class photo optics, so I know a good optic! Get this!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A good product at the right price I use these bins primarily for bird watching and nature generally. I find them to be light and compact enough to fit in my Barbour jacket but, at the same time, robust , accurate and precise in focus changing. Perhaps a small gripe is that they might open wider to fit a person who's eyes are quite far apart (mine only just fit), but otherwise a great buy

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent brightness & clarity We have a lakeside cabin in Downeast Maine. We bought these for bird/critter watching and to take on hikes in the surrounding mountains where we're always trying to figure out what we're seeing in all those gorgeous vistas. We already own an Eagle Optics 8x32 pair of binoculars we bought three years ago and like those very much but we wanted something with a little more range and power, hence went with the 12x42 Monarchs. One deciding factor is that, though 12x42, they weigh about the same as our Eagle Optics pair and also cost about the same. I've used them for more than a week now and am glad I made the purchase. They are well built, fast to focus, bright and offer great clarity at all distances. The attached front-lens covers are a plus since they won't fall off no matter how much you jostle them. Since I've never owned any $1,000-plus high-end optics, I don't know how these stack up. But for my purposes they deliver. One tiny issue is that when zooming in at full power, there's a bit of hand-held jitter and these don't have a tripod fitting...but, then again, mounting binoculars on a tripod kind of defeats the purpose of their maneuverability though that feature might be useful for digiscoping.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Pair of Binoculars Some reviews note issues with eye relief, this is cause by user error (not using built in eye cups). Quick and easy focus. Very light and bright. Purchased as a gift for a bird watcher, no regrets.
