Optimized for long-range use, Nikon's 16x56 Monarch 5 Binoculars received upgrades from the Monarch 3 design to improve image quality with the same focus on comfort and performance the line is known for.

Featuring extra low-dispersion glass elements with anti-reflection, fully multi-coated optics and highly reflective dielectric-coated and phase-corrected roof prisms, the Monarch 5 produce bright and clear high-contrast images with accurate color rendition and minimal color fringing across the entire field of view. The oversized objectives boost their light-gathering ability and help to offset the dimming of the view that often accompanies powerful optics such as these when observing long-distance subjects — ensuring bright and clear views even in challenging light conditions.

Complementing the optical performance are construction details that make these binoculars durable and comfortable to use. They have a lightweight, reinforced polycarbonate ATB chassis and are protected by rubberized armor that is accented with indented palm rests to give them a secure non-slip grip. The optical tubes are nitrogen-filled and O-ring sealed to be waterproof and resistant to internal fogging when moving through extreme temperature variations and environmental conditions. A one-piece ocular rainguard covers the eyecups as they hang around the neck and prevents rain and spraying water from filling them, and the objective lens caps are also tethered to keep them safe from being lost on the forest floor. The combination of high power and large objectives may cause distracting hand shake or arm fatigue when they are held by hand, so Nikon includes an adapter that allows the Monarch to be easily mounted on a tripod or other support system for easier hands-free use.

Optical Performance
  • Powerful 16x power is optimized to make detailed observation and identification at extreme distances
  • Large oversized 56mm objectives maximize light-gathering ability, and help to offset the dimming of the view that often accompanies high-power optics when viewing at long range
  • Roof prism light path ensures optical tubes remain thin for a compact form factor
  • Extra low-dispersion glass reduces chromatic and spherical aberrations for increased contrast, improved color rendition, and sharpness without distortion across the entire field of view
  • Phase-corrected prism coatings reduce internal interference to improve light transmission, contrast, and resolution
  • Anti-reflection fully multi-coated optics maximize light transmission across the entire visible spectrum for accurate color rendition and improved contrast and clarity
  • Highly reflective dielectric prism multi-layer coatings boost internal reflection to >99% to maintain image brightness and improve contrast and clarity
  • 215' field of view at 1000 yards
Use and Handling
  • Closed-bridge configuration provides a solid and stable platform for the internal focusing mechanism
  • Large slip center focus wheel allows for precise focus control, even while wearing gloves
  • Right eye dioptric adjustment collar helps to compensate for individual eye prescription
  • 60-72mm interpupillary distance range allows easy use by a wide variety of people
  • Twist-up/click-stop rubber eyecups for use with or without eyewear
  • Tripod mountable with optional adapter for hands-free use to eliminate arm fatigue and hand shake
  • Long 16.4mm eye relief helps to reduce eye strain and improves viewing comfort
  • 3.5mm exit pupil
Construction Details
  • Environmentally friendly Eco-Glass is made without lead or arsenic
  • Lightweight and durable fiberglass-reinforced polycarbonate chassis
  • Chassis material is temperature resistant, preventing the expansion and contraction that is common with metal, which can cause the optical components to move out of alignment over time and prevent sharp focus
  • Textured protective rubber armoring provides a slip-resistant grip, especially in cold and wet weather
  • Indents on the sides of the optical tubes are ergonomically placed where the hands naturally fall for a more comfortable feel in the hand and a more secure grip
  • Nitrogen-filled and O-ring sealed to be waterproof and resistant to internal fogging when moving through extreme temperature changes and environmental conditions
  • Tripod adapter included for easy mounting onto an array of support systems
  • Black coloring allows them to remain inconspicuous in all environments
  • One-piece tethered ocular rainguard protects eyecups from water pooling in them from rain or spraying water when hanging from the neck
  • Tethered fold-down objective lens caps prevent losing them during observation sessions
  • Weight: 43 ounces

16x56 Monarch 5 Binoculars (Black) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Binoculars I use these for birdwatching. They are so much lighter than the Monarch 4s I used to use. They are comfortable to carry around and quick and easy to focus. The wide lenses give great clarity in low light conditions. The 16x magnification is particularly useful for differentiating between species that are easily confused. They may be more expensive than some other brands but this is a case of getting what you pay for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dollar for Dollar these are a steal. I bought these for sitting and spotting deer in dense bush over long distances instead of a spotting scope. They have performed well and above their purchase price in every aspect from construction to low light visibility, being the last couple of minutes before darkness. Best used on a tripod, though not necessary for short viewing periods, and the metal adapter is soild and steady. I had read others concerns about this adapter being hard to tighten up properly. No concerns at all if you use the correct size screwdriver and better still the binos pack away with the adapter left on in the provided case without issue. I have compared these to some current Euro made 15's and some of their preceeding models in the field. They are not as good as some of the current Euro 15x56 for light transmission or edge to edge clarity. They do give a little as a result for colour sharpness. However the new technology advantage with these Euro made offerings does not equate to the large leap in cost. These are similar to the previous models of some High end Euro Binos for quality of light transmission in the similar magnification. Most other offerings are 15x as these are a 16x. Exit pupil is slightly less giving way to the Euro models for last light performance, but only in the final minute or so. Overall, quality of build is sound and functional and above current offering in the same price field. These are not at the cutting edge of technology per some Euro models, however they are only a step and a half down at the most without the price tag. When used with a near full moon they again showed their quality. The only cons, could be longevity of clarity in the lenses in years to come, as some lesser priced models can get smokey in the glass. If these don't, they are a steal and I honestly don't expect them to as Nikon have a good reputation with their lens quality and if you resell them down the track you probably won't get much for them compared to the Euro version which historically of late hold their value extremely well in the second hand market. Depth of field is excellent with focussing a little ardous at short range as the focus wheel completes a full range with one turn and so is quick. They have withstood rain, snow and a back pack into the hills without issue. Easy on the eye, no noticable eye strain over a long viewing period. I can't comment on suitability for eyeglasses as I don't wear them. I suppose if you want the very best buy the Euro versions, but you will pay a lot more for not much more performance. I gave them a 5 star rating because honestly they are performing well above their respective price range.
