Sony 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 overview

  • 1Description

Make sure you have the right tool for both stills and movies with this E PZ 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Lens from Sony. Equipped with a power zoom mechanism that can be set to different speeds, users will enjoy smooth, precise zooms during their videos. Designed for APS-C-format E-mount cameras, shooters will be able to make good use of the lens' vast zoom range, which is equivalent to 27-300mm. Also, it has a variable f/3.5-6.3 aperture to keep the overall size to a minimum and uses extra-low dispersion and aspherical elements to combat aberrations.

Ensuring sharp images at all focal lengths is built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization to reduce the effects of camera shake. Also, it has an internal focus design which prevents the lens from changing length during focusing. Additionally, it is equipped with a seven-blade circular diaphragm for smooth bokeh.

Designed for APS-C-format E-mount cameras, this 18-200mm offers users a vast wide-angle to super telephoto range equivalent to 27-300mm.
A variable f/3.5-6.3 maximum aperture helps keep the lens' overall size and weight to a minimum.
Extra-low dispersion glass is featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
Aspherical elements are incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system can be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur. This lens also offers an Active Mode which provides stabilization, even at the wide end, when shooting movies.
Enjoy smooth zooms ideal for shooting movies with the power zoom mechanism which can have its speed adjusted to suit different styles and needs.
An internal focus mechanism contributes to faster, more responsive autofocus, the minimum focus distance of 11.8", and easier handling as the lens does not change in length during use.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

    Sony 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 reviews

    E PZ 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Lens is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 36.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quality lens with smooth motorized zoom I purchased this lens to extend the focal range of my Sony NEX-6 that I originally purchased with an 11-18 mm ultrawide angle lens. I tried out the lens under some of the worst conditions in an interior museum gallery with no windows and no supplemental lighting and no tripod. The lens was still able to autofocus even with an ISO setting of 12,800. The motorized zoom was virtually silent although a bit slower than I expected. My other issue with the lens was it was significantly heavier than using my Panasonic FZ150 24X Superzoom and after using the Sony lens for two hours in a target rich museum setting my shoulders and upper arms became quite sore.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Smooth video zooming Currently, this is the only Sony zoom lens with an internal motor. So it is primarily for video use. I bought it for my FS100. I'm happy with the smooth, steady zooming with speed control. This feature is really the only reason I purchased it. Since it does what I bought it for and there is nothing else to compare it too, I give it 4 stars. What I'm not so happy about is the motor on the bottom of the lens. Be aware that the main photo of this lens is not showing you the bottom. The motor covers part of the focus ring. This makes it necessary to purchase a follow focus system instead of using the rubber jar opener trick for focus pulling.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens for NEX-VG900 This lens integrates perfectly with the VG900. Rocker arm zoom control works flawlessly! I have used this in a variety of scenarios from low light to action shots and the zoom and autofocus work like a charm. The only complaint I have is that the servo makes it very difficult to mount on my Merlin2 since it extends quite a bit under the lowest line of the camera. This lens is virtually SILENT during both zoom and autofocus! With several hours of recording using both the built in mic and with a shotgun mic either top or arm mounted, I did not once pick up sound from the lens AF or zoom. That is pretty amazing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb run and gun lens! I've tried almost all the superzooms but this is it - almost perfect lens for run and gun style shooting. Specially useful for travel documentary as it's not that fast aperture wise but the f6.3 aperture is still quite useful for avoiding small focusing errors or if the subject moves a bit during an interview. It also focuses quite close even at 200mm (0.50m/1.64ft). I use this on NEX 5n (when travelling) and on FS700 (Picture Profile nr 3 for almost noiseless ISO 3200 in low light). Be aware that the motorized zoom isn't completely silent and on camera mic will pick it up. One should also take a notice that a video style square lens hood is indeed included in the box albeit not mentioned in what's in the box description - I was a bit worried about that prior receiving the lens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Much improved over the old version I've been using this lens with my FS-100 (and more recently FS7) for a while. It's my go-to for handheld don't know what's going to happen next shots because it can roll with just about any situation. It has so many things going for it. Image stabilization is strong, AF is decent, the zoom range is huge, and the image is consistently sharp. It's also par focal, except while zooming, when it will go soft momentarily before settling. The zoom servo also works well with the FS7's variable hand grip. Here's the bottom line: If this lens were a constant f/f2.8, it would be the ultimate miracle lens. I'd be willing to pay four times as much for a faster constant aperture version. But, as it is, the slow and ramping aperture is a major drag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Pleasantly Surprised! I wanted a GOOD tele zoom. I have a third party tele zoom lens that I had hoped would work well. It was a disappointment. This lens is more than I was hoping for. Great color, exceptionally sharp photos and more. On 24MP files digital zooming in Lightroom means I doubt I'll ever need a longer zoom. And it covers wide angle exceptionally well too! Other than the lens hood being a little funky (I believe its made more for movies than still shots), I have no complaints and I'm VERY HAPPY I spent a few extra bucks to get this lens!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Zoom for NEX videos I have used this lens both for still and video NEX cameras. The most recent use was for July 4th fireworks photography. This is a high resolution lens, although the Sony manual zoom lens of the same focal length appears to have at least as high a resolution, and is less expensive. The lens appears to be made solidly. However, it is heavy compared to the NEX video camera bodies. It takes some practice to learn balancing the video camera in hand, because it becomes front-heavy upon attaching the lens. Also it takes some practice to reach the wide-tele switch, which is in an unusual place compared with standard consumer camcorders. Also I found no advantage over the manual 18-200 zoom when using on NEX-7 or NEX-5 still camera bodies.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from everything I expected I got the NEX-7 plus the Zeiss 24mm in Jan 2012, and have been using both a lot since as a supplement my Canon DSLR gear. I have been very pleased with both for both stills and video - low light performance is especially impressive. At family/sporting events, however, an NEX with a superzoom is much more practical than a DSLR and/or juggling primes, which means you will capture moments (in remarkably sharp detail) that you would otherwise miss, which is the name of the game. The smooth/slow powered zoom Sony's 18-200 PZ OSS is in fact a very significant and helpful addition to the 18-200 design if you want to shoot smooth/artistic video, as getting a uniform slow zoom by hand is otherwise somewhat difficult (if you want/need fast zoom for certain action sports, just click the PZ feature off and zoom the lens by hand). In short, an NEX + the 18-200 PZ setup works quite well for both HD video and 24MP stills (that can be blown up to 16x20 prints with compelling detail) in a very wide range of practical situations that demand smallish gear. Highly recommended.
