Equipped with a power zoom mechanism that can be set to different speeds, users will enjoy smooth, precise zooms during their videos. Designed for APS-C-format E-mount cameras, shooters will be able to make good use of the lens' vast zoom range, which is equivalent to 27-300mm. Also, it has a variable f/3.5-6.3 aperture to keep the overall size to a minimum and uses extra-low dispersion and aspherical elements to combat aberrations.

Ensuring sharp images at all focal lengths is built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization to reduce the effects of camera shake. Also, it has an internal focus design which prevents the lens from changing length during focusing. Additionally, it is equipped with a seven-blade circular diaphragm for smooth bokeh.

Designed for APS-C-format E-mount cameras, this 18-200mm offers users a vast wide-angle to super telephoto range equivalent to 27-300mm.
A variable f/3.5-6.3 maximum aperture helps keep the lens' overall size and weight to a minimum.
Extra-low dispersion glass is featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.

Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system can be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur. This lens also offers an Active Mode which provides stabilization, even at the wide end, when shooting movies.

This lens is fantastic. If you film events zooming is essential. Using photo lens for zooming in video is ridiculous. This lens even though its only a 3 different constant speeds still solves the problems of focus breathing and loosing focus during zooms.

Great optics

Excellent optics; used on a Sony A6500.  I have used it primarily for stills, but the zoom servo (3 speeds) is smooth and quiet.  Great travel all purpose lens.  BUT, it is quite heavy, especially for a light APC, mirrorless camera, and, inexplicably, Sony put the servo on the bottom of the lens so tripod support of the lens is difficult and the camera cannot sit on a flat surface.Pictures below from a motoring sailboat.

Good zoom lens with two great design flaws

This is probably the next best super zoom to the Sony 24-240mm lens, plus it has servo zoom. At 18mm there is noticeable fisheye but not a deal breaker. This is not a power zoom lens like the f/4 ones. This is simply a smaller version of the 24-240mm (the front element extends when zooming, and the lens tube is split into two parts to make the length of the physical casing shorter) with a servo motor attached. Thats a step down from the power zooms because the zoom speed is quite limited, and the motor is tiny and makes a slight noise when operating, although the image itself zooms smoothly. At full extension it gets more front-heavy as well. So I dont know what they were thinking, but Sony chose to attach the servo motor to... the bottom... without its own tripod mount. Thats the absolute worst place to put a servo motor without its own mount, because I cant mount it to larger tripod plates as the motor is in the way!! The motor housing extends about a half inch past the bottom of the camera body, and it is round rather than flat, so I cant even put the camera upright on a flat surface. I just dont understand why Sony would do this.

Great, versatile, good AF

Works with the rocker on the VG30, or use the lens rocker with VG20 or Sony DSLR such as A6300. AF is not too fast, not too slow and there is a nice resistance on the zoom ring when set to manual. Does have some weight to it, though. 18-200 is an impressive range and makes for a great video lens, especially when shooting a stage with good light. This is not a full-frame lens.

I initially bought this lens along with the Sony Nex VG 900 camera body. Both items worked really good together until...Pretty soon after the warranty expired the lens broke (something with the motor inside). I sent it to Sony service to be fixed and they told me it's not worth fixing it since it will cost a lot. I liked the combo (camera+lens) so I bought a second one. The second one I have is still running but not perfectly. The lens mechanism jumps with a click while zooming closer to 200mm. It's still ok and does a good job with autofocus, but not worth the money. Very disappointed in the product and Sony service

Sony Power zoom Lens are great for video shooting and also for taking portrait pictures. I use this lens with Sony A6500 camera.

protrusion below camera body causes tripod mount problems

The servo bulge for this lens is below the camera body, so it causes many tripod mounting problems. With some tripods, where the shoe must slide back before releasing, the lens has to be removed from the camera before the camera and shoe can be released. The lens is also completely incompatible with tripod-mounted audio interfaces where the camera mounts to the top of the interface. Remote control of the PZ function is possible, but very slow, jerky and unreliable due to poor software design. If I had known about the dysfunctional design, I would have waited for a different PZ lens and corrections to the remote camera control software. Extremely disappointed.

Three speeds power zoom, zooms smoothly in manual, with just the right amount of resistance, but you must first turn off servo for manual or you might damage the gear. Zoom rocker is variable. Stabilzation is great. Uses battery power off the camera body. A little heavier than the the non-power version. Housing is very sturdy.

This lens is fully compatible with the Sony NEX-7. The shape of the lens hood you use will not affect the functionality of the camera's autofocus.

I have a Sony NEX-6 with the 6-50 OSS lens. I want to get a telephoto zoom and trying to decide which one to get and whether to get an 18-200 or a 55-200?

This is one situation where it seems the 18-200mm lens may slightly out-perform the two-lens setup of the 16-50mm and 55-210mm lenses. While image quality does typically prefer the two-lens setup, the 18-200mm lens is well-designed (as indicated by its price), and the main struggles it would have would be with chromatic abberation, and slightly with distortion on the wide-end of the zoom; however, even for the all-in-one lens, it performs better than the 16-50mm lens at 16mm natively. When using the 16-50mm lens and the 55-210mm lens, some of the optical issues can be corrected simply by activating the camera's Distortion Correction feature, which also assists in correcting for vignetting. Basically, if you are on a budget, the two lens setup would be a good option, using the camera's Distortion Correction feature, but if you need a one-lens-does-all solution, then the 18-200mm lens is a good option on the NEX camera platform.

Can someone explain the fairly significant price difference between the Sony SELP12800 and SEL18200? At least superficially these are more or less the same lens.

This lens, the SELP12800, is more expensive because it has a Powered Zoom. The SEL18200 does not have a Powered Zoom, it is a manual zoom lens only.

Using this lens with a sony a6000. Does anyone know of a way to mount it on a camera head like the vinten vision blue? The bottom of the lens extends below the camera body blocking the plate from entering the head.

The only way is to make an adapter (Spacer) between Camera and Vinten Vision Blue. I had the same problem with my mounting so I made an adapter.....
