Pentax WG-3 overview

  • 1Description

The green Optio WG-3 Digital Camera with GPS Kit from Pentax provides you with the WG-3 camera, a carabiner strap and a macro stand. The camera has a backlit CMOS image sensor with a resolution of 16MP. It's equipped with a 3", 460K-pixel widescreen TFT LCD monitor providing a 170° horizontal and vertical viewing angle. The monitor has an anti-reflective coating. The WG-3's 4x optical zoom lens has an effective focal length of 4.5-18mm, equivalent to 25-100mm in 35mm format. It also features a wide, fast f/2.0 aperture. Six LED Macro Lights around the circumference of the lens barrel allow for brighter, more uniform illumination for macro work. The lens has a protective cover with an SP coating.

To compensate for camera shake, and thus enable you to capture blur-free shots, the camera utilizes two forms of image stabilization: sensor-shift and digital. The digital component is divided into two parts: Pixel Track and high ISO. This rugged camera is waterproof, with a depth rating of 45.9'. It's also shockproof against drops up to 6.5', and crushproof against up to 220 LBF. Additionally, the WG-3 is dustproof (JIS 6) and built to withstand extreme temperatures as cold as 14°F.

Capture Full HD 1080p video at 30fps. The camera is equipped with a GPS module for recording position and travel log data onto captured images. The WG-3's advanced imaging engine enables a high ISO of 6400 for low-light shooting. Also aiding in efficiency of use is the ability to wirelessly recharge the battery, which alleviates the need to open battery compartments or remove the battery from the device.

16MP Resolution
Features a backlit CMOS image sensor with a primary color filter and a 16MP resolution. The sensor works with the camera's advanced imaging engine to offer a maximum ISO of 6400 for low-light shooting--without compromising on image quality or color accuracy
3" LCD
Equipped with a 3", 460K-pixel 16:9 widescreen TFT LCD monitor that offers a 170° horizontal and vertical viewing angle. The screen has an anti-reflective (AR) coating for glare-free viewing in bright light
4x Optical Zoom Lens
The lens' effective focal length is 4.5-18mm (35mm equivalent: 25-100mm), covering a wide-angle to telephoto range with a 4x optical zoom. The camera's Intelligent Zoom (digital) function extends the range further to approximately 28.8x, covering up to a 35mm equivalent focal length of 720mm. The lens also has a wide, fast f/2.0 maximum aperture. A total of 6 LED Macro Lights surround the circumference of the lens barrel, enabling brighter, more uniform illumination for macro work when the Digital Microscope mode is selected. Additionally, the lens has a protective cover with an SP coating
Image Stabilization
To counteract the effects of camera shake, especially in low light, the Optio WG-3 uses two forms of Shake Reduction (image stabilization): sensor-shift and digital. The digital component is divided into two parts: Pixel Track and high ISO. Together, the three components are referred to as the triple shake reduction system. The Movie SR mode stabilizes your videos
Extreme Durability
This rugged camera is waterproof for up to 2 hr of continuous use at a maximum depth of 45.9'. It's also shockproof against drops up to 6.5', and crushproof against up to 220 LBF. Additionally, the WG-3 is dustproof (JIS 6) and built to withstand extreme temperatures as cold as 14°F

    Pentax WG-3 reviews

WG-3 Digital Camera with GPS Kit (Green) is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from good camera, but beware Bought the camera for a snorkeling adventure with my family. I have used sealife cameras before so I know the concerns with keeping the o-ring clean and each night I cleaned. For the first two days it lived up to its name. Great pictures and didn't have to worry about getting it wet. On day 3 of snorkeling it leaked and no more underwater pictures. Compartment only has a single gasket to prevent leaks. Would not recommend this for beach adventures. Lesson is to always bring a backup underwater camera

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not great So I took the WG-3, my Sony dsc-hx9v and my gopro on vacation with me. The WG-3 takes awesome macro pics. Everything else pretty much sucks, comparatively speaking. The WG-3 really needs a red filter for any underwater photography other than in a swimming pool. The panoramic and low light modes were terrible. Neither of which would focus correctly. I did enjoy not having to worry about the WG getting wet, but thats about it. The Sony takes much better pics and the gopro takes much better underwater pics. The only use I see for the WG-3 is if you need a rugged camera that takes lousey pics.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Unexpected surprise I bought this camera for the durability, but was delighted to discover it has incredible macro capabilities! The image quality is great and it has a lot of bells and whistles. The only things I feel are lacking is a lens protector (the front element is exposed even when the camera is off), and the ability to shoot in more manual modes like Aperture Priority. Overall, the WG-3 is perfect to bring along on those adventures when I'm too scared to bring my DSLR.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One Tough Camera I go into the mountains, streams and seashores frequently. As a member of a Mineral and Gem Club we take many trips into isolated, rugged and often times wet areas. So I was looking for a camera that was light weight and compact that would be able to take a beating and getting wet and this camera can go underwater up to 42 feet. I also want a camera that took photos at high MexaPixels and be able to take video too. That is a big order to ask from a camera! But this camera fit the bill on every demand and did it so easily and with a speed and quality way beyond anything I would have expected. I have seven cameras, two of which are GoPro Cameras that fit the bill for things I do. But this Pentax has not left my hip since I recieved it because it is always ready to cover any situation I find myself in. I just can't say enough about how much I love this camera and can say I am sure anyone who puts this in their arsenol will be as happy as I have been.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Always tough, now also capable The Pentax WG-3 complete with inbuilt GPS finally delivers the goods. This all-weather camera was always rated as one of the toughest on the market, however it lacked resolution, was rather noisy and had no inbuilt anti-shake mechanism of any kind; which, due to the pressure needed to press down the shutter release, often resulted in blurry pics. Pentax's new WG-3 fixes all that. With a 16mp resolution, relatively low noise, good ISO range, and inbuilt anti-shake technology, this camera is not only waterproof, crush, and shockproof, has well-functioning, fast GSP, it also is easy to use, even for big fingers. The camera is a perfect little 'go anywhere' camera. The only thing I'd fix: the carry strap with the carabiner gets in the way of shooting and should have a simple single-handed sling strap. They could always give you the carabiner as an extra so if you want to hang the camera off your belt you can. Great camera and definitely not just a toy.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Lasted 1 week I purchased the camera for its waterproof qualities to take on a 3 week Greek Island vacation. The camera performed superbly both in and out of the water for one week. After one week, I noticed condensation on the inside of the LCD screen. I unlocked both locks on the battery compartment and water dripped out. The camera has not worked since. Before the camera failed, I basically took the camera swimming for about 30 mins, would get out for an hour, and then go swimming again for 30 mins. This was the camera's routine for the week it was operational. Additionally I never swam below 10 feet of the surface and the camera was never dropped or subjected to extreme temperatures. I have contacted BH Photo and the Ricoh Customer Service Department. Currently the camera is being sent to Ricoh for either repair or exchange. Based on what happens next will determine if I change the rating. This simply could have been a one time bad camera, but for the price I expected a better experience. If Ricoh backs their product and does right by the customer, I will update my review.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What i was dreaming about all the time. All the time is in my back pack. Microscope function is perfect (for the money of course). Now I can take pictures in the jungle, boat, wind surfer. Any places I don't dear to take my xk$ lenses. Pictures of flowers from less then 1 inch are priceless. Lack of any type lens cover is big plus. Can you imagine camera in mud and automatic door on the lens get stuck ?? Lack of separate wall charger is bad. But it looks like this is industry directions dis days. I don't like it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from very poor service after reading others reviews I felt I should update my review. In July I sent the camera back to pentax and in early July I was approved for a replacement. I am still waiting for the replacement. I have called numerous times and they only say the wharehouse is waiting for a stock from the manufacturer. Yet the camera is still being offered for sale.
