Nikon 800mm f/5.6 overview

  • 1Description

The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR Lens is a telephoto lens that is compatible with both FX and DX-sized image sensors. This lens features a rugged magnesium alloy barrel construction that provides durability and strength that are suitable for its use with wildlife, nature, and sports shooting applications.

The lens construction integrates two fluorite lens elements to help reduce the overall weight of the lens while also offering chromatic aberration-reduction benefits. Also aiding in the reduction of chromatic aberration is the inclusion of two ED (extra-low dispersion) elements that furthermore provide an increase in image sharpness, clarity, and color fidelity. A Nano Crystal Coat is applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections and ghosting for greater image clarity and contrast. Built-in Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to lessen the appearance of blur caused by camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops, which greatly benefits this lens' use in low-light conditions and fast-paced photography. Additionally, an electromagnetic aperture mechanism is integrated into the lens design to provide greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.

The AF-S Teleconverter TC800-1.25E ED is included with the lens to further extend the effective focal length to 1000mm f/7.1. This teleconverter incorporates an ED element into its design to maintain the high image quality achieved by the lens alone. Additionally, the electromagnetic aperture control is fully supported when the teleconverter is in use.

Compatible with both Nikon FX- and DX-sized image sensors.

Nikon 800mm f/5.6 reviews

AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR Lens is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 21.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb, smaller and lighter than expected This lens is perfect in every respect. Tripod collar is silky, autofocus immediate, sharpness jawdropping. I would like to complement B&H for its remarkable service in this purchase. Despite B&H's careful boxing, UPS severely damaged the Nikon case in which my first lens shipped, and although the lens itself showed no damage and seemed to work fine, B&H exchanged the potentially damaged lens with no question. The customer service rep understood my concern that if there were problems with the lens down the line, Nikon would not repair under warranty if it determined impact damage to be the culprit. Its brand new replacement arrived exactly one week later, which I thought was remarkably quick. There was no argument, no discussion, just an instantly issued RMA. I can't recommend B&H highly enough.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It lives up to the hype. I have been wanting to upgrade my old AF-s 500 for some time. It was a tossup between the 600 and 800. Most of what I read and what I saw on uTube didn't really answer the question. But the one thing that stuck in my mind was the raves about the sharpness of the 800mm. Another thing that was mentioned a lot was the speed with which it focused when paired with a D4s. As my title says, it lives up to both claims. I mostly shoot birds and I have never come home with so many keepers. For most shots, post processing consists of a little cropping and maybe some tonal adjustment depending on the light. The lens is obviously heavy. That's just a fact, not a criticism. I do wish that Nikon would incorporate an Arca-Swiss groove into the lens foot, and come up with a more practical 'lens cap'. It's a lot of money, but I think it was well spent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Your wife will leave you, but who cares? For bird photography this is the bomb. Insanely sharp, focuses quick, the 1.25x teleconverter (included and mated for life with its partner 800mm - they even share the same serial number - I know old fashioned but true) works great. As long as you know the limitations of super-telephoto lenses this will be your Dreamboat Relationship. However if you haven't shot 500mm and longer lenses there is a steep learning curve. Every glitch in your technique will be magnified - your fault, not the lens's. The only complaint I can muster (other than you could buy a small country for the same price) is the the rugged hard-side case that comes with it forces you to remove the teleconverter to store the lens. It would be nice if it had a removable shim so you could store the lens either with or without the 1.25x on. Bottom line: biggest drawback to this lens is your SO will get jealous that you spend so much time with it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Bitingly sharp I know a lot of bird and sports photographers highly rate this lens and rightfully so. This might surprise some of you but this is my go for lens for weddings. I had Sigma's bigma 2.8 zoom, now while the speed was great in dark lighting it was heavy and poor reach 500mm. My assistant is happy that I retired that lens and not him. So instead I got the Nikkor for the close up of the ring shot....i know ....i know before you say it. No I didn't use flash, instead the trusty VR coped very well in the Gothic church. It does test your long shot technique, but if after two more weeks of training you assistant still wobbles get a new assistant.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Yes, it's that good! There is no reason to hesitate buying this lens. If you are wondering if the image quality measure up to Nikon's other does. I have been using it with a D800 and I can't get over the detail that the camera/lens combination is able to resolve. The Vibration Reduction works as advertised. I have shot this hand held and was happy with the performance. The lens is light for its size. The focal length really does make it extremely sensitive to vibration, so VR is useful on the tripod as well. Using the proper shooting technique is also helpful. You must upgrade your camera's firmware specifically for the lens. or it will not perform properly. The image quality will suffer, as I found out the hard way. I did not notice any degradation in performance with the TC800-1.25 installed, except the increased f stop. I'd like to tell you more but I don't feel like I have even come close to seeing what this lens is capable of. I will be putting it to the test over the next few months. It really is the lens that long distance shooters have been waiting for. My primary use is for surfing and birds, and yes, I am handling it like it's a baby :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Grab it at once, don't think twice I purchased this 800mm lens together with Nikon D4s in June 2014 and have used the combo on several bird watching trips, mostly to bird hides on wetlands and one trip on a junk to a terns island. It proved worthy of its price and beyond.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful!!! Great lens -as every reviewer, only positives. I had it for only a couple of weeks and have been practicing with it. So far I have used it with both, D4s (for birds) and D800E (for moon and stationary items), for birding moon pictures, and some pictures of very distant items. Awesome pics. I have the Sigma 15-600 with 1.4x shooting at 850mm, approx, and the Nikkor 200-500 +1.4x. However pics with Nikkor 800mm + 1.25x are clearer and faster. It definitely helps to use a tripod or bean bag....I am very excited and happy with my acquisition

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharpest lens in the world, so far... It is the sharpest lens in the world, at the moment. Best to use with the Nikon D800E. Photographs taken with this lens, justify this.
