Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM Art Overview

A sophisticated and compact prime, the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM Art is a versatile normal-length lens for APS-C-format Canon EF-mount cameras. Featuring a bright f/1.4 maximum aperture, this lens excels in difficult lighting conditions and also affords increased control over depth of field for isolating subjects using selective focus. As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.
Normal-length prime is designed for APS-C-format Canon EF-mount cameras and provides a 48mm equivalent focal length.
Impressively bright f/1.4 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in low-light conditions and also provides greater control over the focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.
One aspherical element is used to help limit distortion and spherical aberrations and also contributes to greater overall sharpness and accurate rendering.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), along with a rear focus system, realizes quick and quiet autofocus, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
Constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations. Additionally, a brass bayonet affords improved mounting accuracy and rigidity.
This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

With this lens on the D810, if you put it into 1.2x crop, there is no noticeable vignetting.

Sigma 30mm art or Nikon 50mm better?

Sigma 30mm art or Nikon 50mm better?
Asked by: Tech
Comparing a 30mm to a 50mm lens is a bit like comparing apples to oranges; 30mm is a wide-angle focal length, while 50mm is considered a "normal" focal length, so they are usually used for different purposes. The Sigma 30mm, however, is an APS-C lens, only compatible with crop-sensor cameras, while both the Nikon 50mm f/1.4 and 50mm f/1.8 are compatible with full-frame cameras and crop-sensor cameras. For this reason, the Nikon lenses are better optically, as well--full-frame lenses generally are better than crop-sensor lenses.

Does this have the focus problems of the 35mm? I have a Sigma 35mm Art, and the focus is completely unreliable, despite repeated calibration and servicing. When it's on, it's magic, but it's completely unreliable.

Can this lens be used with the Canon 90D?

Can this lens be used with the Canon 90D?
Asked by: Maurice
Well, I purchase this item for my 70D and was intrigued by the aperture and good ratings only to find out that I could not make any sharp images with it. It comes with a calibration tool, but when I checked it was supposed to be correctly setup which means that it would have required me to actually work hard to do the calibration myself with trial and error. I don't think that makes sense at all: you buy a lens FOR Cannon and it actually does NOT work for Cannon right away (or at all). So, not for me and reading through many message posts, it's not a straight forward process even if you try, some people end up saying "it gives me sharp images in this and this situation", sorry, don't want to pay $499 for something I am left along to figure out how it works. (note: I've owned cameras and lenses for a long time, am a hobbyist that started way before digital, I just can't accept the usability of this lens)
