Sigma 30mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

The silver 30mm f/2.8 DN Lens for Micro Four Thirds Cameras from Sigma is standard length prime lens for Micro Four Thirds cameras. Its focal length is equivalent to a 60mm lens in the 35mm format and its minimum focus distance is 11.8" (30 cm). Its f/2.8 maximum aperture is ideal for shallow depth of field imaging and allows it to maintain sharpness in low light situations. An inner focusing system means the lens does not extend when focusing and its newly developed linear autofocus motor is accurate and quiet. Sigma's Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides sharp and high contrast images even at the maximum aperture, and with two glass molded aspherical elements including a double-sided aspherical element, aberrations are kept to a minimum. The result is accurate color definition and sharp imaging across the frame. A metal exterior provides durability and handsome design.

Standard length 30mm prime lens for Micro Four Thirds cameras with a 60mm focal length equivalent
Maximum aperture of f/2.8 is effective in low light situations and able to create lovely shallow depth of field images.
Inner focusing system and linear autofocus motor for efficient, smooth, quiet and accurate focus.
Two glass molded aspherical elements, including a double-sided aspherical element and Super Multi-Layer Coating minimizes aberrations and reduces flare and ghosting for sharp, high contrast images.
A brass bayonet mount has both high accuracy and durability. A special treatment to reinforce its strength is applied to the surface giving it greater strength and making it highly resistant to long-term use.

    Sigma 30mm f/2.8 reviews

30mm f/2.8 DN Lens for Micro Four Thirds Cameras (Silver) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Great Lens at a Bargain Price This little 4/3 lens from Sigma is a real gem - especially considering the price. It's plain, light, and yes - the innards rattle, as other reviewers have mentioned. Never mind, that's the way it's made and it doesn't hurt a thing! The optics are great - sharp images with just about 0 distortion and vignetting. I've used this lens for closeup and landscape photography, and it does a great job in all instances. It's particularly useful for walk around and closeups, as its 60mm (equivalent) is ideal for those photographic events. I highly recommend it - you can't go wrong with this lens!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT LENS I will never understand why everybody wants 1.8 prime lenses for micro four thirds. 2.8 is more than enough, period. I Use it with Olympus M-10Very well built lens,it has a hood MR OLYMPUS MAN do you hear this???? how can a company that make such great cameras be so mean!!!! for God sake just for your company's image put the hood and disguise it with the price!!! all your lenses come without hood SHAME ON YOU. It's pathetic. This lens has everything, hood and case and great qualityI am glad I bought it and the price is just peanuts. As good or better than an Olympus lens WELL DONE SIGMA!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An excellent and affordable normal lens I was just about to buy the original version of this lens (which was consistently reviewed positively), when I saw that Sigma had introduced a second generation version due to come out in just a few weeks. I'm glad I waited. It's one of the few normal lenses available for the m4/3 line. And it's a lot less expensive than the the Panasonic/Leica 25mm, the nearest comparable focal length. At 30mm, it's on the long end of normal, but that actually suits my shooting style better than the wide normals like the Panasonic 20mm. The lens is (supposedly) optically identical to its predecessor, but has a greatly improved build. The body is solid metal that has plenty of heft. It autofocuses on my Olympus OM-D very rapidly and almost silently. Manual focus is very responsive and feels far less fly by wire than the Olympus lenses I have used in the past. It's much closer to the old manual focus feel. A real plus! The focusing ring is smooth metal, however, so its grip isn't as good as the textured focusing rings found on most lenses. I think Sigma preferred esthetics over function here. Image quality is very good and the lens looks nice and bright through the finder. While f2.8 isn't the brightest glass available, it's a lot better than the usual kit zoom that comes with most m4/3 systems. A reversible bayonet lens hood and soft case come with the lens. The hood fits too loosely and comes off easily, especially when in the reverse storage position. Definitely annoying. Overall, I am very pleased with this lens and think that the second generation version is definitely an improvement over the original design. If you're looking for an affordable standard prime, this is a good place to start.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from IQ and quality amazing for the price. I bought Sigma's 60mm f/2.8 DN to use with my Olympus E-M10. The results from the 60mm were excellent, so when the 30mm f2.8 and the 19mm f/2.8 went on sale, I ordered both. The 30mm has not disappointed and I can't believe Sigma is selling this lens so cheaply. The images from the 30mm are very sharp and have excellent image quality. The build is also excellent with a metal body and mount The body is also unique looking because the focus ring is smooth shiny metal instead of the typical ribbed plastic or rubber. The lens also comes with a hood and a small case to store it in. The lens only has two abnormalities that kept me from giving it five stars. It uses a floating element as part of its design and when the camera is powered-down or goes to sleep, the lens rattles. The other quirk is that when the camera is turned-on or woken-up, it takes a second or two before you see an image in the EVF or LCD.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality at an affordable price. I got this lens for Christmas and boy was I surprised. The build quality is pretty decent for a consumer lens. I was surprised at how light weight the lens is. I use it primarily for shooting video on my Panasonic GH3. I like that the lens shipped with a good quality soft case and lens hood. Auto-focusing is quick and quiet. In terms of features, the Sigma 30mm offers all the basics that I need from a prime lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great, inexpensive lens This lens does exactly what I hoped it would. Strong bokeh effect, good integration with my Panasonic DMC-G7. Just got it and I'm already using it constantly for video.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens I recently bought this lens and so far I really love taking images with it. The lenght (30mm) seems to most closely match what I'm seeing so it works well for walk-around and street photography. I really like the sharpness, presence and contrast this lens offers. So far, I'm liking it more than my more pricey Panasonic Leica 25mm. Using it on my Lumix G5.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice image, but look out Image quality on the Sigma 30mm f2.8 is nice for a lens in this price range. Looks great and is compact. However, there is no manual/auto focus switch on the outside, which means you can only switch between the two in-camera. So, don't buy this if you're planning on using it with the Black Magic Pocket camera. Some people report that it works fine with their pockets, but it definitely did not with mine. And I haven't seen any indication that either Sigma or Black Magic is serious about developing support for this lens in the near future. Shame, as I was looking foward to getting the new 65mm and 19mm. Could've been a great little lens kit for a reasonable price. Better off buying the 30mm 1.8 for Canon and the new MetaBones Speedbooster.
