Vanguard GH-300T overview

  • 1Description

The GH-300T Pistol Grip Ball Head from Vanguard combines impressive ergonomic control with the ease and flexibility of precision ball head adjustments. The lightweight pistol grip allows you to lock, unlock, and reposition your gear comfortably with one hand, leaving your other hand free to make lens adjustments. The separate panning lock, 2 bubble levels, and 360° panning mechanism with 72 built-in click stops allow for precise panoramic positioning. The -32 to +90-degrees of side-to-side tilt and -8 to +90-degree back to front tilting facilitates a wide range of camera movement.

An efficient control system allows you to modify the level of friction on the ball to accommodate changing equipment weight up to 17.6 lb, while the anodized center ball allows extremely fluid movement without sacrificing precise control. Another extremely convenient feature of the GH-300T is the built-in shutter release that allows you to shoot and adjust camera position without ever taking your hand off the trigger. The two included cables are compatible with 80% of the DSLRs on the market. The GH-300T comes complete with a quick release and camera plate.

Vanguard GH-300T reviews

GH-300T Pistol Grip Ball Head is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 34.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Helpful piece of equipment. I have it on a sturdy monopod with my D700 and Sigma (Bigma)50-500mm lens, both of which are heavy, to say the least. It helps keep them steady, not to mention, saves the weight from being around my neck. I read previous reviews where it was mentioned that it was hard/stiff to push in the grip to move it up and down--I feel it gives more stability to be stiff, you can't accidently push it and have your lens go straight down easily. My current problem is getting used to the fact that I can focus and take a picture from the grip--I still keep going up to the camera to focus for the first couple of shots until I remember I can do it from the handle.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works as Advertised, and on a Budget If you want it easy to squeeze and move you have to loosen the friction, but then when you release, it will not hold the camera well. If you tighten the friction it's hard to squeeze and move. Other reviews have noted this. However, when you tighten the friction, you can still squeeze and move it with a bit of muscle input. And, then it holds the camera and a reasonably heavy lens rock solid, better than I expected after watching the demo video. I think it's a very, very good product at this price point, and for occasional or maybe moderate use. For heavy use I'd go with another more expensive one, this one might fatigue your hand and wrist. I would recommend it given these cautions.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Unique and good ball head with a glitch. This ball head is unique, and highly usable, but it has a bad defect. The eight inch pin port in the head handle is manufactured incorrectly, and pin easily drops out. The port is too big for the pin. I've talked to Vanguard about this, and they are working to correct it, but until they do, I'd highly recommend waiting to purchase. Even with the pin taped in, it wabbles in the port.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much more than expected I live in a retirement community that has a lot of predator bird action, such as Ospreys, Eagles and occasional hawk. I have to hand hold my camera with an 18-300 zoom lens because my current heads will not allow a fluid up and down and pan mode in a smooth motion. the pistol grip allows me to mount a fairly heavy camera Nikon d7000 with the 18-300 lens and get a focused and steady picture or movie of the aerial action of the birds. I am waiting for the cable to come in that works with my camera. I need a TN-2 cable for this camera. What amazing is the locking feature. Wherever you release the grip, it holds the camera in place.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Absolute garbage I have been struggling with this for a long time and unfortunately, B&H has been zero help on it too. The main function of a tripod (and head) is obviously to hold the camera steady and this one won't. The connection between the bottom plate and the next piece loosens up with every movement. I can't take it apart and I can't tighten it. I now have probably ruined it completely as I have no idea which way to turn it to tighten it. I will never buy a Vanguard product again and even though B&H has been my go to source, this has made me reevaluate that relationship as well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amazing pistol grip ball head It is really well made. Very solid. I love the shutter trigger on the handle. I had to get the cable for the Sony A65 but it works perfectly. Press the trigger half way to focus then all the way to shoot. My only complain it is that my hand gets tired after a while by pressing the handle grip. I am 40 and don't have any issues with my hands but it is a little hard to squeeze the grip after a while.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from It cannot not point upward I tried to use it with a spotting scope for night sky observation and found it could not point upward. Also under high magnification (20X plus) the creep makes it useless. It is suitable for landscape photography as long as you don't need to point upward.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality Product I previously owned a GH-100 and was happy with it. I purchased the GH-300 for two reasons, heavier load capacity and this head has a trigger release and the GH-100 does not. I found that neither of the two cords supplied with the GH-300 worked with my Nikon D750. First I called Vanguard and was told that no cord is available that would work with the D750. Next I called B&H to return the GH-300 and purchase a different head. B&H supplied me with a trigger cord that works with my D750 - AT NO CHARGE. This cord works fine with my camera. I am very pleased with the camera/head combination, it is what I expected. This is not the first time B&H has done something like this for me. Customer service should be like this. Customer service really means something at B&H. When shopping for photo equipment I always go to B&H!
