The OConnor O-Box WM Matte Box Deluxe Set is a lightweight, wide-angle, mini-matte box system that will accommodate lenses designed for full-sized sensors as wide as 18mm. The matte box has two filter stages that accept either 4 x 4" or 4 x 5.65" filter trays, and the rear stage rotates a full 360 degrees which is useful when working with polarizers or graduated filters. The O-Box deluxe set includes four filter trays, two each of the 4 x 4" and 4 x 5.65" trays, as well as the bellows ring that allows you to mount a 138mm filter as well. The matte box comes with a 15mm LWS bracket, and there are available brackets for 15mm studio rods, 19mm rods, and adapter rings allowing you to use this as a clip-on matte box.

A distinguishing feature of the O-box system is that it incorporates 3/8"-16 threaded mounting holes into the matte box itself. This allows you to attach available O-Grips to the matte box for added stability when hand holding the camera, or other available accessories. Also included with the O-Box are two universal lens rings made from aluminum with a seamless flexible material that stretches over a range of lenses and prevents light leaks from behind the lens, which can reflect off filters ruining your image. The two rings cover lenses ranging from 55 to 134mm in diameter. Rounding out the deluxe kit is a reduction ring that works with the included bellows ring.

OConnor O-Box Reviews

Mine Fell Apart Quickly

OConnor makes amazing gear and I was shocked at how this just fell apart almost instantly... screws coming out, pieces getting loose, etc. And, I'm really good to my gear, I still have Bogen legs from 25+ years ago, my RED MX is still perfect after ten years. But this? It's built solid but mine wasn't durable at all. Plus, the tension in the stages never felt right -- always too loose or too tight, I couldn't get that sweet spot.

OK OCon matte box

Lighter than I expected. I really enjoyed that it has the cheese stick (to use O'Connor's terminology)...that, plus that it's designed to be rigid to actually carry your rig by it were big motivators for me purchasing it. I haven't broken it (having just begun to use it), but it seems like a weakness that the cheese stick is not attached to the metal parts of the frame, which one, will introduce flex, and two, not be as strong. The side mounting points for their handles are attached to the metal parts, as I would expect, but not the top...so I would be reluctant to mount handles/rods/cages to the top, as I was expecting I would be able to do. More for mounting an eyelight or cinetape or a gopro or things like that. I'd keep handles/cages/rod systems on the sides or bottom. I know professional gear is expensive (my bartech and follow focus motor a lone costs more than my motorcycle, for example)...but it does seem pricy. The fact that the cheese plate is just mounted to the plastic (however strong a plastic Ocon says it is, and it appears to be), and the price are the two reasons I didn't rate this four or five stars...

Rock Solid

Love it, I've just had it for one shoot so far, it feels rock solid and built to last. Just be holding it you can tell that it's very high quality. Great investment, knowing that'll outlast all the different cameras that'll you'll own in the future.

Tough Mattebox for all Production Needs

By Gregg

The O-Box is constructed of heavy-duty plastic that holds up well in most shooting situations. This is the second one I bought to work with my F55s and C-500 when outfitted with my Cabrio 19-90mm, Cooke 25-250mm, and set of Zeiss CP2s. Fits the 114mm front element snuggly with no light leaks and allows me to use 4x4 and 4x5.65 filters as well as a 138mm round polarizer. I had a c-stand fall over on a shoot and land on the O-box, only damage was one bent screw. The O-box is virtually indestructible.

Can't say how happy I am

Previously had bad experience with some other extremely pricey and fancy matte box, can't say how happy I am after switching to O-BOX. It is heavy duty, relatively light and very flexible. Great that you have both 4x4 and PRO 4x5.65 filter trays - it allows me to keep using my old 4x4 filters inventory on some lenses. Only two disadvantages I personally found in this design - fixed size side flags (I'd rather have them traditionally adjustable) and 114 mm plastic ring on rubber bellow donut for lenses like CP's - this ring is not tight on rubber bellow - I'm afraid it can be easily lost. Apart from this two things - great product. Highly recommended.

Excellent value, Solid Build quality

Really great, solid mattebox by a company that knows a thing about building high quality camera components. Very modular and versatile, can go from rods to clamp-on in no time. Would love a swing away, but i suppose that would increase the price dramatically. Having said all that, why o why would O'Connor build a super tough mattebox and then put HOLLOW SCREWS in the top flag holder??? This is just bizarre and senseless to me. One of mine bent with a gentle knock and when i went to straighten it, it BROKE. Also the knobs for locking off the filter trays are so small and recessed they are really difficult to use.

question

I have a Fujinon 20-120 ( front diameter unknown) and a sigma cine zoom with a 95mm front diameter. Can I use this matte box without rods on my FS7? What rings do I need ?
Asked by: Adam W.
The 20-120mm Cabrio / T3.5(XK6x20) has a 114mm front. The O-Box has a maximum lens diameter of 150 mm (5.9 in.) So you need to go from 150 to 114mm with this OConnor Step-Down Clamp Ring (150-114mm, Refurbished) B&H # OCC12431123D. For the Sigma, you might try this. Bright Tangerine 150 to 95mm Clamp-On Ring for Viv & Viv 5 B&H # BRB12501012. We do not know the efficacy of this adapter ring.

question

their 15mm rods will not fit into the bottom of the cage. Any suggestions?
Asked by: Adam Q.
I take it that you have a camera cage that has 15mm rod mounts and the OConnor rods are not fitting. Since the 15mm LWS is an industry standard, I would be inclined to think the OConnor rods are correct and the issue lies in the cage's 15mm mounts. Make sure the locks of the cage 15mm mounts are off and please try again. If still no go, then please either return the OConnor matte box, or try a set of rods from the cage manufacturer or, if you are so inclined, enlarge the cage's 15mm rod mounts.

Can the mattebox be risen from the LWS rod? Or ...

Can the mattebox be risen from the LWS rod? Or it’s a fixed height? Is there an accessory to do that?
Asked by: Ruoyu
The world-wide LWS standard from the 15mm rods to the center of the matte box is 85mm. So if the height needs to be changed, it is done to the rails not the matte box. Here is one solution. Others depend on what baseplate you are using. Zacuto VCT Tall Rod Riser BH #ZAZVCTTR • MFR #Z-VCT-TR
