Hauppauge HD-PVR Reviews

Works well with set top box

Works well connected to set top box with a component (red, blue, green jacks) cable connected to the pvr's short composite cable's red - white - yellow output jacks - BUT I found that the PVR's short cable's yellow composite jack must be connected to the component cable's BLUE jack or it either won't work or no color! Audio cables must separately connect set-top box's R-L audio out RCA jacks to PVR cable's Red & White audio jacks. Also must select Composite in the HP capture software - not component connection!

Works Great on PC with Windows 7

Not sure if it works on other OS's, but once I got the updated Firmware & Drivers from website, and figured out the best settings by Trial & Error because there are not many instructions, it works great. I bought this as a Spare in case they stop making the Model 1512, and something happens to my first one. It will record at 60 fps only when the input resolution is 720p. It will record 1080p but at 30 fps, I notice frame "flickering" or "stuttering", so I sacrifice slightly less resolution for smooth motion. Another hint: Record in TS format instead of MP4. I have tried others, such as the Hauppauge HD PVR 60, and the Elegato, but Returned them for Refund because they didn't as work as well as the HD PVR2 1512.

Poor Documentation, Unreliable

The product looks modern and slick, but when I went to set it up, I found that the included quick-start guide is out of date. It calls for installing software from a CD, but the CD is non-existent. Contacting tech support via email confirmed that the software needs to be downloaded from the manufacturer's web site. I bought the video recorder to capture video from an old Sony camera.Unfortunately, although the product literature says it supports composite and S-video input, it does neither well. At first I used a composite video to HDMI converter to capture the video. It seemed to work, but the video format was converted from 4:3 to 16:9. The settings allow for selecting the proper aspect ratio, but the the video was recorded at 16:9 even with 4:3 selected. After contacting Hauppauge tech support by email a second time, I learned that you can use the blue plug from the component input to capture composite video. When I asked tech support where that was documented, they referred me to an on-line manual that I had seen before, but does not address how to hook anything up except component and HDMI sources. The composite to blue component input worked for a few days, but then it stopped working. When I tried to capture video, the interface just said "waiting for composite input." This device may be great for recording HD video games, but it is not well suited for capturing video from an old camcorder.

Seems like a decent product.

Using it to record from a cable TV box. The IR blaster was not the easiest to get setup. It is doing the job.

Was Not Able To Give It A Good Trial

I do not have analog HD video output from my cable box, only SD. The instructions did not include the step of how to connect to SD sources. I asked Hauppage if it was possible. They did reply within a few days with the very easy instructions, but by then I got worried about my return period and had returned the unit. I did eventually purchase a Rocket model, which I like. For my situation this is probably a fortunate sequence of events. For others, the PVR2 might be a better choice.

I purchased this to make video files off of my TV's cable box. I know it has other features (maybe even it's main feature) of making real time videos of computer output. I can't comment on those features because I don't have an interest in them. I do however really like the video output from my Cable box.
